Jan 2008--Ain't it Great?

Hello Jewels,
What a heck a long weekend ... can't believe its back to work tomorrow already.
Son skated this morning at 6:00am in his two man relay (with his best friend), they made it out of their heat, finished 4th in the finals (12 teams total), no wipe outs, but my ds definitely did not skate up to his potential. His partner really had to push to keep them from slipping back even further.
Got home at 1:00, layed down to take yes another nap, and just woke at 5:00. This may not be good for tonights sleep, may need to double up on the Lorazepam tonight.
Speaking of sleep, woke last night in a puddle of sweat in the hotel room, (glad I wasn't in my own bed), or I'd be like Sis Kimberly and hitting the laundry full tilt boogey! Flipped the A/C on in the room, and yep then woke freezing my butt off, wasn't smart enough to change out of a wet T-shirt and boy did it cool me off big time.
So whats up with the sweating only happening to me in the evening and while in bed. I don't notice any big problem with it during my day when I'm moving around, but it hits when I'm kicked back watching tv, reading, whatever in the early eve.
I read through today's post, think I'll pass go and have to shout out tomorrow, looks like most are having a pretty decent weekend, take care to all, and best to CathyCA tomorrow, go kick some bc butt gal!!!

Kimberly -- Actually, I much prefer temperate weather, so I thought last weekend was just fine. It's been in the high 90s this weekend in SoCal and I have the AC running just to survive. It's suppose to cool down to the 80s tomorrow.
I had a CVS coupon so went and stocked up on pure aloe while I was doing errands. For any of you getting ready to start rads, it's a bargain. The CVS brand is $2.59, but if you buy two the second is only half price, so lots cheaper than some of the name brands.
D1-- the recipe looks yummy. I used to make something similar only with marinara sauce.
Carol -- glad your weekend with DS was fun if painful for him. My youngest spent last week on Catalina Island for marine biology and came back a bit under the weather. He was able to go to work last night and tonight, but is saying he's not sure he can golf tomorrow. He needs to take me to chemo before he goes to golf since my parents (who are my normal rides) are out of town.
Vettegal -- glad you were able to have a big celebration. It's wonderful to have a lot of positive along with the negative your family has been experiencing. And, I love PF Chang's.
Good news for all who are reporting they see some hair growth. I never lost all of mine, so I guess I'll know it's growing back when the bald patches fill in.
I've been printing out maps of local hiking trials, so I can start doing longer walks to train for the 3-Day. DH and I did a lot of hiking before and during the first few years of marriage. Once the kids came along, we would do short hikes, but nothing very long. It's amazing how many trails in the area we've talked about doing, but never have, so this is a great excuse. If anyone wants to join our San Diego team, just let me know. I will warn you it's a group of Springsteen fans. The team captain is from Philly and I'm meeting her in North Carolina in two weeks for a concert and to make plans for the walk. Did I mention we are all crazy?
-
This round of Taxol is making me pretty sick (nausea, fatigue, pain). Have slept most of day and ready to go back to bed now that I've got things ready for work tomorrow. We have a teacher work day scheduled so I could take the day off, BUT my students are having a car wash to raise money for their conference in Texas... Hopefully, I'll feel better in the morning.
CathyCA- be thinking of you tomorrow. Hope your treatment goes well and the SE's are mild.
I'll catch up and shout out later...
Paula
-
Hi, me again...
CathyCA -- Best wishes for tomorrow, FUBC!
Paula -- I'm sorry to hear that Taxol is causing nausea. I do continue to take my nausea meds that I'd been prescribed for the AC for the first few days after tx...zofran, ativan (to sleep), and lorazepam. I'm too scared not to, even though onc told me not to expect as much nausea as with the AC.
Carol -- I've noticed the same type of sweating...is it night sweats? That's what I attributed it to. I'm quite certain I've entered the menopause zone, as aunt flo did not visit me last month. It's crazy how quickly weekends go, isn't it? Hoping you'll get some good rest tonight...
Good night all, hope everyone rests well.
Tina
-
Hey Tina, I figure its night sweats, and as well Aunt Flo took a hike last month for me.
I was just wondering why the sweats don't hit during the day, or is that something else to look forward to. It was easy to bitch about Aunt Flo, now I'm bitching about sweating ... I think I'm just in an owly mood.
Paula, hoping that your feeling better after a "good" nights sleep. You are one motivated woman, with all the se's you are there for the kids (including your own).
Cathy, hope the ds is "up to par" to take you to txt tomorrow. I imagine he watched some of the masters this weekend. My dh recorded it and we're actually watching it as I type. What a beautiful course that is. Best to you tomorrow ...

Good morning Jewels! I'll be out this afternoon, so checking in early. I've also decided today will be the official start of my exercise program. I've got to lose these 10 lbs. before I go back to work-or at least some of it. I can't stand myself and none of my clothes fit without making breathing and sitting hard (tight pants).
SIS Kimberly: Glad you are feeling better each day. Yes, it's normal for temperatures to rise in the afternoon and early evening-that's normal body biorhythm. Average normal is 98.6 but many are lower (the only way to know is to check your temp. 3 times a day for a few days in a row when well).
I am such a newbie on the wines. I really have no clue! Thanks for the tip. I should've added to the SP card to get me some info/guidelines on wines! BTW, my cards are done and I'll be mailing them to you later today. I just copied and printed my list off the computer, didn't put them on index cards... but they'll fold and fit into the envelopes.
Cathy-CA: Good luck with your training. Part of my (informal) exercise "program" is going to be walking ½ hr. 4 times a week, then increase the speed and/or distance. Once it gets warmer here, I hope to walk outside.
Good luck today! One more after this...
Carol: You put in quite a full weekend. No wonder you're tired. I didn't have the night sweats too much, so I'm not much help there. Really only had one month of chemopause, though this month is "off"... so who knows?
My dh watches the Masters all weekend, too. Don't want to say who won in case you haven't watched it all yet, but his kid is so cute!
Paula: Hope you feel better soon. I hate GI symptoms-knocks me down quickly every time -
Hi Jewels,
I am so sorry I have been absent. I have not been on the computer Oh My I think its been 3 weeks !
I feel as if I have been in a deep dark tunnel. When I am about to reach the top into the light. I fall back into the dark..
I need to catch up with all of you. I think I am behind about 10-12 pages.
I hope everyone is doing fine. You all have been in my thoughts and prayers. It's just been hard lately for me..
Take care and I promise not to be so absent and catch up !

Morning Gems,
Called the boss at 5:15 this morning, asked if he had a full crew as I could really use a catch up day myself at home. He was most supportive.
Kinda glad I'm here this morning to re-bandage the torn up kid, with the floor burns on his hands I'm a little nervous about infection.
wvgirl, so glad you popped in, I know many of us we're getting a little anxious that we had not heard from you in quite a while. Yes there are a ton of posts, be assured that we are more than happy to just have you let us know how your doing. Carla, your getting through this one step at a time, hang in there gal, we're all here for you, so vent away.
Oh great, just saw on GMAmerica another new report on consumption of alcohol and bc. I'm not liking what I'm hearing, the study results we're concluded with women in the ER/PR+ category. I'm assuming that it will be on the GMA website if anyone wants a downer!!!
Will be popping in throughout the day, yep, it's wash the sheets for me today, thinking I may put down a cozy throw blanket over my side of the bed, this sweating is the pits, and having to wash sheets almost daily is pathetic.
See ya all later,
Carol
-
Cathy-CA, I think you got the goods for rads. My co-worker "sailed" through rads using exactly that same CVS aloe vera gel. She recommended it to me, and said she slathered it on a couple of times per day and never had a hint of trouble with burns, sensitivity, etc.
For anyone interested in that alcohol-bc link, here's the article:
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Health/Healthday/story?id=4645475&page=1
Please note the following from the article before you decide to quit drinking:
But the study does not prove a definite cause-and-effect link. "This is an association," Marian said. "This type of study is good for generating hypotheses. It's not a definite conclusion. It needs to be replicated by other studies to say for sure that what we found is there."

Hi,
Carol - what a weekend for you! I remember not so long ago when I looked forward to at least 2 naps a day - hey, you gotta take them when you can get them. I also had a lot of night sweats while I slept & hot flashes which came mostly in the evenings - & even though I haven't seen Aunt Flo since Christmas Eve, the night sweats & hot flashes have slowed down quite a bit since finishing tx's 6 weeks ago. I hope that doesn't mean Aunt Flo is going to show up for the next big holiday.
I'm so glad you have a very sympathetic boss b/c it sounds like you could use a day at home.
CathyCA - Good luck on your training! If I still lived in So Cal I would join you ( we used to live in Dana Point ). Don't laugh, but since my muscle & joint pain have subsided, I have started my "training" for the 5k Race for the Cure here in Fort Worth (it's not exactly a 3Day) Although, if I don't pick up my pace I just might be walking for 3 days - LOL!
Paula - I am so sorry you're feeling so sick from the Taxol - your students are very blessed to have a teacher as dedicated as you. I hope you listen to your body, though, & take it easy if you have to.
KathyL - I know what it's like to not fit "comfortably" in my work clothes. I had to buy some new scrub pants b/c, even though I could stand okay in the old ones, sitting for any length of time in them really made me feel like a sausage. Good luck w/ your exercize program!
wvgirl - Welcome back - don't worry about 'catching up' - it's just a relief to hear from you. Someone's here lurking or posting almost 24/7 ,it seems like - so we'll be here when you need to vent/gripe/chat. Take care.
Hope everyone has a good week.

Happy Monday, Jewels! Hope CathyCA is rocking the lounge today!
KathyL--You're describing my ear issue perfectly. The good news is that it seems to have cleared up for me, so there's hope!
CathyCA--Your 3-day sounds fun, but I'm not as adventurous as you--I just can't do the camping (I know you said it wasn't your thing, either, but you're proving much braver than I!).
Paula--Take care of yourself, girlfriend. Sounds like you need to kick back for a few.
Carol--you made me gol (groan out loud) with the golfing pun. I didn't think I was having night sweats during the day, either, till I realized I'd been snatching my doorag off my head to cool off periodically. (Does that mean I have to call those "day sweats?")
WVgirl--We've missed you. If you need some help out of that tunnel--grab our hands, we'll help.
LJ13--Thanks for highlighting the caveat in that ABC report. I think I'll go pour myself a glass of wine, now!
Later.

Don't know what the problem was with the website today, but it appears to be resolved now. Maybe that's why I don't have much catching up to do tonight.
WVgirl: Good to hear from you again. Hope you come out of the dark long enough to give an update.
Carol: Glad you could stay home and take it easy today. It's nice that your job allows for that.
Hi to LJ and TexRN. How's work going, Tex?
-
Hey Jewels,
The site seemed to be a little funky today, either too busy or maintenance I suppose.
Cathy, hoping that your txt today was a breeze, and that the se's stay at bay for you, cuz you got things to do, I'm really excited to hear about your adventures with your 3 day walk and your training regimen. Interesting that your captain is from Philly, and your going all the way to NC to meet. Actually for you that is probably nothing. How did she become involved in the San Diego walk?
Kathy, I need to get on the exercise band wagon myself. I have been fortunate to have lost 15lbs since Oct, don't need to lose anymore, but could definitely use some toning. Maybe I should have thought a little more about using my tummy fat to build myself a "mound"! It amazes me how that area doesn't want to flatten out for anything (oh, maybe thats what sit-ups are intended for)! I think your idea of starting with atleast walking a few times a week is great. Havn't read an article/book yet that didn't recommend exercise in the whole grand scheme of things.
LJ, on the alcohol/bc front, at this point I already have had cancer, what could a glass (or maybe two) hurt? I'm definitely not going to stop indulging in something that I have always enjoyed. I just need to remind myself that I don't need to make up for lost time after my six mo of txt are over, and will use the motto of quality over quantity in the future. I'm assuming alot of my weight loss is due to the lack of calories from my usualy indulgence of wine before bc, well maybe a few dinners of Cream of Wheat had something to do with it as well.
Therese, great new pic, its always nice to put a face on the written words. Thanks for sharing, one more mystery woman revealed. Got a good laugh on your Race for the Cure comment. My guess is that you'll be cruisin' right along for that 5K.
D1, okay rub it in, oh, and enjoy a glass of vino for me too! Hey you can keep your day sweats, how's your PB fairing today?
Paula, hope that you felt a bit better today, no time for nausea and pain with your schedule.
Hey I have a couple books if anybody would like me to send one to them, figure I might as well share than just have them sit on my bookshelf ...
Hanging Out With Labcoats, Wendi Fox Pedicone (This is the book that KathyL recommended, an emotional read).
Don't Bet Against Me, Deanna Favre (touches on her years with Brett Favre and conquering the bc battle)
Also, never did get a taker on my size large FUBC T-shirt, would love to find a home for it!
Probably should have gone to work today, I definitely spent more energy working around the house than I would have at work. I will sleep well tonight knowing that alot of my loose ends are tidied up. Off to take the ds to skate practice tonight, sure hoping he stays on his feet. I'll be insisting that he wear a protective glove on his torn up hand, (he'll be fighting me tooth and nail). I guess its not "cool" to speed skate with anything but a helmet for protection!! Mom will have to veto that option!!!
Knowing me, I'll probably have to check the post tonight while watching DWTS.
Take care all, Carol
-
I made it to work a little late--thank God I didn't have students this morning! The car wash started at noon and had lots of kids working, so I got to stand back and supervise most of the time. My dh worked in my place--he's such a good man!
Still feel cruddy... less nausea, but still a lot of pain. I'll just keep repeating my mantra: only one more to go!
WVGirl- So good to see your post, Carla! I have been thinking of you and praying for you often while you've been away. (((BIG HUG)))
KathyL- best wishes with your new exercise program. I am trying to increase my endurance so that I can do the 5K. I can't believe how out of shape I am...
Carol- I'm glad you made it home safely AND happy that you were able to take today to rest up after your busy weekend. Hope ds's boo-boos heal well.
D1- CathyCA and LJ mentioned aloe vera... thinking that the Aloe would be just the thing for that PB. Check w/ babydoc and see if he's okay w/ that.
Therese- You are so lovely! Good to put a face to TexRN!
I think I'm going to take a nice hot bath and kick back. I'd like to be awake for DWTS, but dunno if I'll make it!
Paula

Hi all! Every time I tried to get on the boards today, I got an error! I was about to go crazy and finally got on!
I'll keep this short in case something happens again.
CathyCA - hope you had an uneventful day at the lounge. May your se's be minimal!
Yay!! Free day tomorrow.
I'll have to catch up on all of the posts. I'm not feeling too great today -- the fatigue is just knocking me on my a**!! I DREAD #6 on Thursday when I'm still feeling so bad from #5.
Love to everyone! I'll try to catch up later! Kimberly -- my cards were mailed today!

Hello All,
Its me Dana! I talked to the girl and she is not going to write the letter to the administrator. She apologized to me and said its just hard to hear you speak because you are a straight shooter. So basically I am just going to be quiet now because I dont trust anyone there anymore; some people are sensitive! I am just going to shut my mouth and get my education and move on. She also admit that she has head issues - I wanted to say no really - he ha but I didnt! She was so afraid of me that she said she thought I would jump her in the parking lot - and I never said anything to her. Wow! This is pretty scary to have Nurses that have head issues.
Other then that I am blessed and I thank God to shield me from my enemies. I am so blessed.
I hope you are all doing well - God bless ya.
Love,Dana
-
Kathy - work itself is going well - however, I think overall I've been overdoing it. My first weekend back was the weekend before last, then all last week I was on a roll catching up on errands, chores, getting back on track at the gym, etc... feeling pretty productive, but not stopping at all...then worked this last weekend....then today, after I got back from the gym, it hit me - I've been exhausted the rest of the day. Guess I need to take a day off every now & then. I have just been so motivated b/c I've been feeling so normal lately.
I, too, had a lot of problems w/ the site today, but I was so excited that I finally figured out how to post my picture in my avatar, that I refused to give up.
Kimberly - I've had my cards/envelopes ready to mail since last Thursday, but never made it to the post office last week...& now I can't find them. They're probably with my favorite black baseball cap I can't seem to find either - hmmm! can chemo-brain still effect us 6 weeks out from tx?
Julie & Paula - hang in there, your last one is right around the corner. I hope you both are feeling better by tomorrow.
Everyone rest well tonight.
Therese

Thank for all the good wishes. Treatment was very uneventful. I was sitting near a woman who was getting her first round and tried to answer her questions, so didn't get much reading done. Go back today for Neulasta and then only one more round the beginning of May. It's amazing how fast the time has gone!
Therese -- take it easy and don't overdo. I go to the gym every morning, but have days I nap in the afternoon and am not working. Walking is great for you, but some days you may need to settle for a quick walk around the block if you've already done a lot. Good luck on your 5K. Are you walking it or running it? Isn't Dana Point a wonderful community? We're just up the way in Mission Viejo.
Carol -- The team capt. has family in the area, so did the San Diego one last year. San Diego has a reputation of being a beautiful and temperature friendly walk, so I think it draws from around the country. OTOH, if I do this again, I might pick some place different just to see 60 miles of a different city. It's a coincidence that we both already had plans for Springsteen shows in N.C., so just decided to meet up there.
Dana -- Glad you were able to talk to your classmate. There are times that you have to do what you have to do. Sounds like focusing on getting through school and not worrying about these people is your best course of action.
D1 -- I still haven't completely ruled out spending the night at the Marriott. It looks like you're allowed to leave camp in the evening and come back first thing in the morning. I'm not sure where the camp site is, so I'll have to see what the parking situation is. San Diego has a light rail system and if the camp is anywhere near it, I know a Marriott that has a light rail station right outside the back door.
-
CathyCA - I'm definitely walking the 5K. I used to run back in my 20's when I used to live in Newport Beach, but even back then I only did it b/c I enjoyed the scenery & really not the running. That whole area of south Orange County is beautiful - I was born & raised in So Calif. & lived there until I was about 35, then we moved out here to the Dallas/Fort Worth area to be near family ( my ds & her family moved out here about 17yrs ago & my parents retired out here about 15yrs ago ), plus my dh is from Louisiana & he has family out here in Dallas as well. As beautiful as Dana Point was, I really like it out here mainly b/c I'm near the people that I love the most & my children & their grandparents are a part of each other's everyday life...so life is good! I guess if I miss anything about CA, besides my db who lives in Chino Hills, it's the ocean & the hills.
Anyway, speaking of walking - I must head out to the gym.
Hope everyone has a beautiful day!
Therese

Hi girls! Everyone sounds pretty good today. The posts are light, probably from the site issues yesterday.
Dana: I agree with Cathy-CA that you should just focus on your schooling and not worry about thsoe pesky classmates and their issues.
Well, I tried a pre-set program on the TM yesty-- what a joke! I could barely do it, and had to keep slowing the speed it suggested. I'm a walker, not runner. Crazy machine! I usually just walk for 1/2 hr. at a steady pace after I warm up, maybe I'll stick to that today just faster or longer. I also did some weights for my arms and upper body strength, then some lunges. I'm an idiot-- my legs are not happy today. I wish I could afford a personal trainer-- that's really what I need.
This morning has been an emotional one for me. I've decided to not return to my current job. I'm meeting with our lead doctor tomorrow to let him know. I've been writing my letter of resignation and some personal letters to people I'm close with there. I'm still not sure I'm doing the right thing despite pondering this whole situation for months. It's a very long story. But one that started well before BC came along... this has just made me more aware of changes I need to make and things/people I'm not willing to put up with anymore. I have always wanted to be an NP, so leaving this job feels like a personal defeat/loss for me-- I LOVE the job, just not the environment. I'm dreading tomorrow b/c I'm thinking it will be a scene-- I hope I'm wrong. More on the subject later...

Hi Jewels,
I have been having bad headaches for weeks, I will have to go to the medical doc this week for a anitbiotic. I know I have a sinus infection and UTI, when I was at the cancer center for my rads simulation. I went to the other side and ask about my urine culture and they nurse said it had bacteria in it. Of coarse no one has called me from the cancer center to give me a script. I'm not surprised at that place. I'm just going to see how things turn out. At least I know I need to see a doc. Thanks for explaining the secret pal, I did finally get caught up on the post. I felt so bad I was so far behind. At this time I will have to pass on the secret pal, I think it's a great pick me upper. And it will be fun, I'm not working at this time. But it will be fun for everyone else. I'm trying to decide if I should just try to find some office work, or stick with my SS claim for spinal injury in 2006. It could take it another 2 yrs to go to court. I don't have that kind of time. I'm going to call a lawyer for advice. So I can't afford to join in on the fun. (Better days ahead)
D1 Glad you had a good time with your college girl and dear dad. I'm glad you are getting through rads ok, our leader is blazing the trail for us. Hopefully frankenboob won't get to burned. I also waited for the last moment to get my taxes done, I also went on Sat 4-12. That is the first time I have ever waited so long to get my taxes done. One good thing I don't owe as much as last year. WHEW! Great that you defended your daughter during the game. Hang in there. Thanks for the recipe, cant wait to try it, that sounds great with wine or vernors HaHaHa
SiS Kimberly So glad you are getting better, that was one nasty infection. A mean one to it decided to hop to the other side. I hope your visit with the plastic surgeon went ok. Gel well soon.
Dana So sorry you had problems with your class mate, I think she is a spoiled child and mean and blaming it on head problems. Don't be her victim. I'm glad you both talked it out, she needs to commend you on trying so hard to get through school and you are so sick with cancer. She should be applauding you, instead of putting more stress on our LW. Hang in there Dana, and I hope the tumor on liver is smaller or gone. God Bless you!
Vettegal So sorry about vettesis, I hope it's not as grim as it sounds. Don't panic wait for the full report. You and vetteguy and the vette look great together.
Carol Sorry about poor ds knees, I hope he heals quick. It does make you hurt when they hurt. I hope he does not have to skate again until it heals some. He needs knee pads. Thanks for all the advice. I'm so glad your boss gave you a day off, that was really nice I'm glad he is compassionate. That's great you lost 15 pds
Maz So sorry your friend is so sick, I'm glad she had a good day and called you.
Jenn So sorry about your friend too, I hope he won't be in pain and I know you being there helps him.
Paula Glad dh was there to help you at the car wash, thank goodness it was not a washout. HaHaha.
Tinalee Missed you too and everyone.
Cathy good luck with your excercise ( sp) plan, I'm also trying to bet back to walking and toning. I did lose 2 pds since last week.
To all the MIA'S get well and come back. And to everyone I'm glad you all are hanging in there and kicking cancer's butt. The positive attitudes are great.
To everyone going for chemo this week and rads, Kick some cancer butt FUBC.
To the ones that just finished HOORAH.
Take care, Lots of (((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))) SheShe

Hey Gang, had a taker on Wendi's book (Paula), will be getting it in the mail to her today, I'm sure that it will be able to travel from her to the next gem.
Yeah, for a free txt day, at work as I type, will be back tonight!

Hi girls. This just in from my TA. She doesn't have June 2009 rates, but based her estimate on this year with 10% added for next year's increase at most. These prices are per person for 4 days, three nights. (So if we went Fri.-Sun., it'd be less). June is "slow/off" season there, so the rates are lower. Here's what she said:
"Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix is VERY popular and well rated.
AGAIN, an estimate........
3 nights, including tax and service: $240 per person.
The nice part is, it's only 12 miles from the Phoenix Airport.........so if you didn't want the expense of a rental car, you could always take taxi's!
AND, there are many more flights into Phoenix than into Tuscon! My vote is a resort in PHOENIX!!
More economical....and easier!!"
Check out this resort above, you can google it. It look nice and dh's 'rents have been there and liked it.
Also liking the following:
Lowes Ventana Canyon (Tucson), about $250 pp
The Westin La Paloma (Tucson), about $275 pp

Good Afternoon Jewels,
Tried to check in yesty morning, but the site wasn’t letting me get on, so I went about my day hoping to check in later. Talked with Carol for a bit, and then spent the day with my sister. I got home at 5pm after a stop at the store to get Benadryl Cream and dinner stuff. I was exhausted, so needless to say, I didn’t check in as I’d hoped.
I have developed an allergic reaction to adhesives on my skin. On Sunday, the apparatus they had attached to my port to keep my port accessed so they don’t have to poke me everyday, was removed as it only lasts 7 days. My skin was red and welted looking. On Monday, yesterday, the nurse tried to reattach a new apparatus, but the big swab of whatever they use to sterilize the area stung like a bugger, and when the trans-dermal (clear large bandage thingy) went over the port apparatus connector, my skin immediately started to sting and itch. After the infusion, only 30 minutes, she took the trans-dermal off and tried a different adhesive thing that looked like an oversized Bandaid, but that too just caused immediate burning and itching. When she took it off, my poor skin was red, rashy, and itchy. She said enough of that, we’ll just have to access daily. I must say on the plus side, getting dressed and sleeping is much easier without the apparatus attached, and I can shower instead of sitting in a bath and trying to avoid getting it wet.
I’ve switched my last chemo to have it done at the infusion center where I’m doing my IV antibiotics. My onc. wasn’t v forthcoming about my having a choice to do my chemo at his office or the infusion center, which is literally down the hall from my onc’s office, so I though if I didn’t want to drive to Sacramento I had to do it in his office. It’s really a small space that has 12 chairs crammed in, and no room for visitors unless one of the 12 chairs available. The nurses, although nice, were practically tripping over each other. It was really a bummer to have my friend or family member waiting in the waiting room for me instead of being in with me. I found out that oncologists who do chemo in their office get a financial benefit, so now I understand why my onc didn’t volunteer the information that I had a choice. My onc’s office called to ask why I was switching, so I was honest and explained that it was claustrophobic. I was not happy that I had never been able to have a friend or family member be able to sit with me, although twice they were able to sit, but not for more than 10 or 15 minutes, before being sent out to the waiting room. Anyway, I’m so excited my sisters will be able to actually sit with me the whole time for my last chemo.
Another thought. During my 4th infusion, the one when I got my first infection, the nurse taking care of me was sick with what I later found out was a sinus infection that followed closely a respiratory illness she’s had previously. She wasn’t wearing a mask, but obviously had gloves on, and she was running a fever. She was waiting for another nurse to come in and take her place. Of course, it was during the course of the nurses chatting that I found this out, and by then she had already accessed my port. You figured these nurses know what they are doing since they do this all the time, but WOW what was she thinking being so sick and being around people with compromised immune systems. Was her accessing my port without a mask the cause of my infection? I plan to bring this up to my onc. when I see him on the 22nd before chemo as I didn’t think the nurse who called to find out why I changed infusion sites needed to know that part. Since my onc is their boss, he should make sure his nurses follow safe protocols.
Diana- A waitress I talked to yesterday is an 8 year survivor. She told me her hair came back in white, apparently the pigment is slow to return. Two weeks or so later, it was dark like her mom’s hair was as a young woman. Then, two weeks later it changed again to be lighter and with a tight curl. She cut and cut it hoping to cut the tight curl out, but it took almost two years before it suddenly relaxed. Now, it has a nice wave. Something to look forward to, eh? It will be a surprise what our hair ends up being like in the end.
Carol- Yeah, what is up with that overheating and sweating thing just at night? And, yeah, freezing my booty off after I’ve soaked the sheets and my body temp has regained control of itself? Night sweats sounds right, but I was hoping it was my fever. Hmmm, would this account for my temp going up every night since I’ve been tracking it?
Glad to hear you ds got 4th with his best bud, and even more pleased that you took the day off yesterday to rest and recoup from that killer weekend.
15 pounds? I haven’t lost a thing. I’ve gained a few. With as little as I’ve been eating, I’m not happy. Of course, you’re more active than I am at this point, so hopefully it will come off easily when I can really attack the workouts again.
CathyCa- I’m so glad you weekend in Sac. was good. It wasin the 90’s up here for a few days, too. I think it’s going to be a hot summer. Hiking sounds like a great training tool. I used to hike a lot as well and will have to start doing more once I’ve got the energy to do that. We’ve got some great trails up this way in the foothills.
Hope your ds gets to feeling better and can make his golf game/practice. I know my sister was down for a few days this weekend for some viral cold thing. She said lots of people at work had been through it.
Paula- I’m so sorry your last infusion hit you so hard. I hope you are well enough to help with the car wash, too, but hope you will listen to your body and rest if that’s what it needs. (((HUGS))) Just read your next post, glad you made it and that your dh is such a great help to you.
One more is my mantra too. WhooHoo.
Tina- Oh,welcome to the Night Sweats club. So, is this the revenge of Auntie Flo?
Kathy- Thanks for the temp. info. I’ve been tracking it since I started my IV antibiotic. How long after I start antibiotics can I say, I’m well? 99.3 seems to be my evening temp for the past several nights in a row.
Good for you on starting your exercise program. ½ hour of walking is a great start. Wow, you did more than walk yesterday, eh? Think of those sore muscles as progress.
Oh, I’m so sorry you are struggling with the job decision, but I think you know in your heart it’s the right thing to do. Life if too short to be unhappy with a work environment, so not returning to that negative space is wise. Think of this an opportunity for something perfect for you to come along. You’ve got to have the space to let the new in before it can present itself. ((((HUGS))))
Thanks for taking on our reunion trip. I’m up for whatever everyone else is up for as I just want to meet everyone.
Fri-Sun would preferable if dh’s are coming so they don’t have to take off so much work time, and getting someone to watch kids might be easier as well. I’ll check out those sites.
Carla (wvgirl)- I’m so glad to hear from you, but so sorry to hear you’ve been dragged back into the darkness every time you reach the light. Please let us know how we can help.
LJ13- Thank you for pointing out that part about no cause and effect link, only fodder for hypothesis. You know, anyone can make a hypothesis based on this kind of info. If a majority of women with ER+ cancer all answered a survey with Yes to things like: Do you or have you played with Barbies? Do you or have you been exposed to fragrances?
Do you or have you chewed sugar free gum? We could say there may be a link between Barbies, fragrances, and sugarfree gum to ER+ cancer. I know it’s a tongue and cheek example, but I think it makes a good point. Leaking this kind of unsubstantiated info just keeps people confused and afraid. It seems that unless there is absolute causal connections, this kind of stuff should not be released.
Therese- Love the picture/avatar. And thanks for the hope that these night sweats will lessen after treatment is over. I too hope the lessening doesn’t mean Aunt Flo will be making a return.
Man, you must being feeling good. You’re just going like the energizer bunny. Good that you’ve recognized that even if you’re feeling normal, your body is still recovering.
LOL on misplacing the cards and hat. I guess chemo brain can still effect you 6 weeks out. I read an article about chemo brain. It can take as long as treatment or longer for the body to recuperate fully, and some se’s can last longer or be permanent. Let’s hope chemo brain isn’t going to hang on much longer.
Julie- I’m sorry #5 kicked you butt. It kicked mine, too. Is #6 your last, too? Take care, sweetie. (((HUGS)))
Dana- I’m so glad you took the high road and spoke to this girl. Clearly, she’s in pain and taking it out on you. Glad she was able to own her stuff.
How did the retake go?
SheShe- I totally understand the financial thing keeping you from joining us with the Secret Pal thing. Good luck with your SS claim. Talking to a lawyer sounds like a good idea. Seeing a doc, since your cancer center isn’t taking action for your UTI and potential sinus infection is a good idea as well.
Take care of yourself, sister friend.
All caught up. Have a great Tuesday ladies.

Happy Day Off, Jewels!! Hopefully, we'll have many more of these real soon.
Saw babydoc today after my zap. He said my swelling (and then de-swelling--is that a word?) of my scar tissue is normal. He also examined some small blistery looking bumps on my skin and told me that they weren't blisters, just skin imperfections that are magnified by radiation (how dare he suggest that I have skin imperfections!!). He also complimented me on my energy level--he thought I'd be flagging by now. I did tell him that today was the first day I had a hard time getting up to keep my 8am appointment at the gym, but I did it! And apparently PB is right on target for my fair skin. I asked him if I'd be up to travel over Memorial Day weekend as my sisters and I are planning a weekend away for us and our mom to celebrate my mom's 70th b-day (which was in March, but I was otherwise occupied...). If I stay on schedule, my last zap will be May 9. He said because I'm doing so well so far, he doesn't see a reason that I'll need a day off, so I should stay on schedule to finish up on May 9. That gives me 2 weeks before our proposed cation. Apparently, I'll still have a nasty, uncomfortable burn, but he thinks my energy will be returning by then, so he gave me the green light! Now I have to coordinate with my sisters!! Oh boy!!!
Hey Carol, if no one wants the books--I'll take them. I actually rooted around a Barnes & Noble last weekend in search of them, but didn't have title and author info with me and for the life of me could not remember any of it. So I came home empty handed. I'll return them to you, or forward to another reader when I'm through, whatever your preference. Thanks. Oh, I just saw that Paula wants Wendi's book, so I'll wait for her to finish that one. If you still need some eyes for Deanna's book, I'll start there.
Speaking of Paula, hang in there. You've been really active lately, which must make your head feel good, but take care of your body, too. Oh, and I did ask babydoc about pure aloe vera today, but the lotion I'm using has aloe in it, so he didn't think I'd need it. I hope he's right.
Julie--I'm sending you high energy thoughts for tomorrow. You need a good day before tx.
LWDana--Good to hear you are putting your misunderstanding behind you. Besides, you need to save your energy for other, more important, battles right now.
KathyL--I'm not surprised to hear of your decision to leave your job. Your posts have consistently been heading that way since we've been Jewels. Be peaceful with your choice and know everything is for the best. I'm excited to check out the place in Phoenix!
Sheshe--I like wine with the lasagna rolls, myself.
SIS Kimberly--Gosh, you DO have sensitive skin! That sounded like a yucky experience. Good for you to follow through on the infusion center switch. It sounds like you'll be much happier in the new place.
Oh, and I deserve the wet noodle lashing--I haven't even STARTED my cards, yet!!!
Here's wishing CHJ and Wendy a good experience in the lounge tomorrow. FUBC!!!

SIS Kimberly: I have the sensitive skin, too. I welt up with most tapes and the tegaderm dressing they like to put over my port. Last time my nurse used paper tape, which was much better. Maybe it would work for you, too. But first it sounds like you need that area to heal!
What a bonus about doing your last chemo where you get your abx. It will be nice to spend with some "chemo buddies" (as I like to call my friends or family that join me). It's a shame you didn't find out earlier about that place.
In regards to the sick nurse: she most likely had something viral which would not cause your bacterial infection. But she was putting you and other patients at an incredible risk by being there. I'd write a note to the nurse manager or office manager regarding the incident. And to answer your abx question: most of the time you are not "contagious" from a bacterial infection after 24-48 hrs. of abx use. However, it could take the full course of abx or longer until you feel well again depending on the severity of the infection and the type and length of abx used.
Thanks for your input on my job situation. I've been reluctant to mention it here in detail just in case anyone would be lurking (I know, the chances are slim, but you never know-this is a public site). You sound just like my therapist! It's definitely something that's been eating at me and causing a lot of negative energy!
About AZ: I also would lean towards a 3 day event. Just want to get a feel for the general consensus. We have lots of time to discuss it all.
D1: Love your post. You and Kimberly always write with such a flair. Glad you'll be able to travel with your family despite the burnt boob. Didn't realize I'd kvetched about my job that much here! It's just time to move on. Tomorrow will be a step in a new direction.
‘Night girls! GL to CHJ and Wendy tomorrow! I hope to be able to check in sometime, but we'll see how it goes.
-
Just checking in after my infusion.
D1- Glad PB is on track as far as her tanning regime
, you know you'll have to eventually lay out so the other boob can get a tan, too, or use your tanning lotion. How's that working out? I often threaten my students with the wet noodle when they say things like," I forgot my assignment. " I reply, " The consequences will be steep. 20 lashes with a wet noodle and the lesson to be responsible and put your completed work in your binder when you're done with it." At first they crack up, and then they realize that I'm not going to let them turn it in late. Poor babies, they have such a hard time with being held accountable sometimes.
How fun, a girls getaway!!! My twin and I, and hopefully our older sis can join in, are going to Chicago at the end of June right before our birthday. She has a conference, but we'll get to spend time after together and may take an extra day. We also get to see Lionel Richie. I'm planning on checking out the sights while she's working.
Kathy- I'm so glad you know this is the right move for you! BRAVO, girl. It isn't easy taking that big leap of faith and walking on the risky, OMG, "I don't know what to expect" side of life...Remember, as I've said, " Right now at this moment is known! There is nothing beyond now." Look at the word 'known'...the word now resides within it!!!!
I'll be thinking about ya tomorrow, CHJ and Wendy!!!!!

Hi Jewels,
Well, believe it or not, I do believe spring has sprung. We actually got out of the 20’s and 30’s today. Knowing Minnesota weather, as I do, we’ll probably jump right into summer with 90’s and humidity! We just can’t win… I did make ds #2 do a little garden spring cleaning for me and clear out my window boxes today. He has finished his senior year early (last Thursday), so, doesn’t need to go to school any more. I’m giving him a few day “breather” (sleeping in late, staying up late) before I start badgering him about getting a full time job, or increasing hours at his current job.
CHJ and Wendy – Thinking of you tomorrow as you head in for tx, hope things are uneventful!
D1 – Thank you for the great recipe. We’re going to give it a whirl Friday night. Your Memorial Day trip sounds fun! Where are you planning on taking your Mom?
KathyL – Making a change in employment is never easy, but, it sounds like you are making a well informed decision. I wish you didn’t have this added stress. I’ve been employed by the same company since 1985. There are days when I’d like to do something different…or, for someone different. Attitudes have changed in my industry and my company. Not always for the better. Then, I struggle with my age, my accomplishments, my seniority, etc…a very difficult decision. When we meet (yes, when) in person with the rest of the gems, you’ll be able to share your story. I, too, vote for Phoenix. And, a 3-day is perfect!
Carla – Great to hear from you. Don’t worry about catching up. Just drop in when you can. Know you are missed and thought of, too.
Carol – Glad that you could take yesty off. Everyone needs a “free day” now and then. You had such a full weekend, I hope you’ve recuperated. These freakin night sweats are making me nuts…I have to wash pj’s every other day. What a pain.
LJ – Dammit…people always gotta be messin’ with the wine…it’s just not fair! Appreciate you bringing thought provoking content to the thread, though.
Kimberly – Right when I thought you were gaining ground, then, this allergic reaction hits! You’ve had your fair share now! I’m surprised that a sick nurse would be around people with compromised immune systems. Viral or bacteria, it sure doesn’t give you a warm fuzzy, does it? I’m glad that you’ll be able to have a chemo buddy with you on your last one!
Sheshe – I am sorry to hear you, too, are sick! That’s just the last thing we all need, eh? I hope you’ll get some medicine to kick that thing in its’ butt. Feel better soon!
Dana – Happy to hear from you. Glad the situation with the other student is over. What a hassle and distraction.
Julie – Lay low. Rest, rest, and then rest some more. Sorry you’re feeling so fatigued.
Paula – Wishing the se’s away for you. Your dh sounds wonderful. I’ve had the “only one more to go” thinking for the last two weeks. I’ve been a little anxious today…wishing Thursday was here.
Good night jewels.

Evenin' girls,
I'm kicked back on the sofa w/ the laptop, watching DWTS. Had a meeting this evening and then caught the end of ds' ballgame. It felt sooo good to get home and put my pjs on!
My meeting was with our board of education to ask for $$ for my students' trip to Dallas. The estimated cost for all 36 of us to go to the conference is over $30,000. We have almost $20,000 raised so far... long way to go, but we're working hard!
KathyL- life IS too short to waste any time on a job that makes you miserable. Good luck in finding a position that brings fulfillment without frustration!
Wishing CHJ and Wendi an easy chemo day tomorrow.
take care, Jewels!
Paula
