The Cat Conversation

The Italian cat is so pretty!! I think very highly of a town that supports kitties. They must be great people. I love those beautiful babies above. Marisa, what do you think your cats will do when the baby comes? Are they going to have a hard time giving up their stuff?
-
Rachel just stopped in the middle of the room and let out such a yowl! She does this occasionally and we can't figure out why. In the same way, LoMein, who rarely moews will start running from one end of the room to the other for absolutely no reason--at least no reason apparent to us--and then stops, also for no reason.
It's probably the reason they fascinate me so much. I have no idea what motivates them.
-
Here is a pic of my kitties... IF I can do this right....
-
I tried to put a pic of my furbabies on here, but it didn't go thru...
I have done this before, but now... it escapes me!!
Harley -
Harley--I posted directions on the Cottage Thread as to how to do this, under my name, but if you can't figure it out, send me a PM and I'll tell you how. You need to put your photos in photobucket first, although there are probably other ways of doing it.

i love cats. here are my boys, Zeebie (Zebra) the striped one, and Fuji the black one.
Zeebie is my soulmate cat. He is 17 years old. He was feral, born in my backyard in California. I tamed him and his whole colony and had them fixed and neutered, vaccinated, and then found homes for all. Zeebie and i have been together from the very first stare.
Fuji is my little crazy cat. He is almost 11 years old.
-
What pretty kitties.
-
Celia--I second that. Lovely cats.
Both my cats have been spitting up more recently. The younger one, who tends to eat his own hair, always spits up more than the other. But now they're both doing it. Is it the change in weather, do you think? Are they both starting to lose hair and ingest it when cleaning themselves, or is it still too early for that?
-
I just LOVE Fuji...Such a beautiful cat!! I am a sucker for black cats or black & white tuxedos... they are so pretty!!
anneshirley,
I don't know where you live, but it is definitely not too early for them to start losing hair, and ingesting it while cleaning. I live near the Myrtle Beach area, and it is warming up. Thor, who is a Norwegian Forest cat, has long hair, and he is always eating it, when he cleans himself!
gotta love those cats!

Anneshirley, You might try changing to a food that helps control hairballs. We had to do that with one of our previous cats and it really helped. Also, you probably already know, but you can use Petromalt. Just put some on your finger, and most cats will lick it off. If they won't just put on the tops of their front paws.
All the cats are so cute. Our beach town has a feral cat program, and we donate to them regularly. People in an area volunteer to feed the cats. Most are trapped first, and vets often will treat, spay/neuter and vaccinate for free or very low cost. I have run into several women who are feeding kitties in town, and they are just so nice and friendly, telling me all about "their" responsibilities to these kitties.
When I worked at a local community college, we developed a cat feeding and care program. The adminstrators gave the most money when asked as we often had trouble getting low cost vet care. I adopted two kittens that were 6 weeks old. One of the gardener's found them in the road, scared. The white one turned out to be deaf, and I think her sister didn't want to leave him there so she stayed by him. I still have her. Yesterday she climbed in to the grandbaby's vibrating sling chair--it was off and my daughter walked over, and Leia started to get up to jump off, but daughter turned it on and she slept there for a couple of hours! The other pics of the kitty in the baby stuff reminded me.
Love coming here to see everyone's kitty pics. -
Well, my little guy Junior is still coming around. This morning I kept Sisu in so I could feed him without her standing near him glowering. She is so intimidating--but not enough to keep him away. I talk to him before I feed him. Today he did go under the house, but just under and watched me the whole time. Then came up to eat, looking in the window every once in a while. I noticed his left ear is notched so I believe he is a feral that was trapped at some time and neutered, vaccinated and released. At least that's what we do in this area of California. I saw the slit earlier but it looked like a cat fight scar. Well, it's definitely a V. So, I am still planning to get him used to me and come to eat on a regular basis.
I don't know if he's getting fed also by someone else. We live in the woods, and I don't know of any feral cat feeders near me. I'm hoping that by the end of summer he will come and eat even if I'm out on the patio reading or working in the garden. He is just a chunky big tom with huge front feet.
He wasn't around for several days, and on Saturday my dh noticed him down by the shed and the recycling bins. Ran away as we went to get in the car. Glad he came today to eat. I'm a sucker for an animal.
Saturday we went to PetSmart to get dog and cat supplies. Had to look at the kitties up for adoption there. PetSmart provides space for a cat rescue program that is all volunteer. They have it open almost every day, and the money raised goes towards rescuing and keeping kitties from being euthanized.
I saw a lovely, long haired black and white cat I could have brought home in a heartbeat. Dh was with me, so no go. Also, a Siamese mix who was very vocal and wanted attention. He is named McDreamy. Definitely cuter than McDreamy character on Grey's Anatomy IMHO!! LOL -
Well, haven't seen Junior in days. My gray and white female, Sisu, who behaves like a male stays out almost until 10 pm every night. She sleeps in in am, till about 11 am and then goes out. She checks in once in a while throughout the day, but other than that I dont' see her.
I believe she is keeping Junior away--patroling the grounds! When she comes in she looks like she's mad about something. And when she goes out she immediately heads for underneath the house.
She is sooooo possessive of us, it is too funny.
Last night she didn't come in because my granddaughter and daughter were here. She is afraid of the baby, which I guess is a good thing as she can bat you for almost nothing.
My tortie, Leia, just hunkers down on the couch and lets the baby pat her, and pet her, and pull on her hair. Of course, we do discourage that. Last night I went in the kitchen to get a glass a water, and when I came out the baby was lying across the cat's back. Leia just looked at me, as if to say, what am I the babysitter?
Amazing the different personalities each pet has. -
Hey,
We have two cats and one 64 lb dog that is afraid of the cats. The dog was in the house one day and walked thru the study. This required her walking a narrow path between a bed and table. Winky, our female cat hates the dog, and she meowed at our male cat, Pepper, as she jumped on the dogs back. She hung on and Pepper attacked from the rear. We had to rescue the poor dog and she is still scared of the cats to this day. She could eat both cats at one
setting but they have her convinced they are pure evil. Funny to watch such a big dog tremble when she sees a cat!

such funny stories!! i always feel sorry for people who say they don't like cats--they are soo missing out because cats are the funniest, strangest creatures---all different personalities too. i love dogs too, but cats are challenging in such an interesting way.
annshirley, your cats are spitting up more because spring is coming and they are starting to shed. My two are doing this too. One of my cats spits up way more than the other, always has. yuck...furballs...not my favorite thing! those kittens from Uruguay are so adorable...makes me drool wanting one!
emelee, your cats "trying out the baby stuff" are so totally smug. I bet they do get jealous when the baby arrives home!!
more pictures!!!!! love them!!!!

when i was going thru chemo, i told my husband my cat dosage had to increase from 2 to 3 (we'd go higher if the kids and i could get away with it). i remember wearing one maine coon/tabby on my head instead of a wig (heavy, but warm and cute). the fur therapy really helped. now that chemo is history(now is enough for me), the kids and i go pet the rescue kittens/kitties as often as possible, and think about smuggling them home (but financially, i think a dosage of three furs is our limit).
take care,
--hattie -
Hi Hattie!! wow!! Maine Coon cats are rather large cats too. I had one a long time ago who was 20 lbs of lean tomcat. Quite a heavy "wig" to wear, but i agree, warm and cute and loveable!!!!
Nice to see you posting!

I promise, when I get a chance, to try and post pics of my two boys... Spike & Thor! I just love cats, too!!
I had some trouble using photo bucket last time I tried... but the weird thing is that I have used it twice to post pics here... I guess I just forgot how to do it...

ok...here goes... these are my furbabies... Spike is the tuxedo and Thor is the Norwegian Forest cat...he's all black!
-
She's a doll, I think I would have gone nuts with out my cats but some days when I was really sick I felt guilty because I couldn't play with them like usual. They are so much happier now that it's getting warm out and they can lay on the deck. I have to upload photobucket then I'll post some pictures.

awwww kitties!
Hey cat lovers, I have a question please.
I am moving to Dallas. What do I do with my cat? (whose name is Dallas btw)
She is VERY skiddish. She is a rescue cat and I don't know what happened to the poor thing but even after almost three years, in my same house, if I move to fast....she hauls a**. She's a scaredy cat. What am I gonna do? My sister's cat just rides along in a van like a dog but Dallas barely lets me hold her.
Should I put her on a plane with my mom? (She's flying, not driving) Make her a little apartment in the back of an SUV and have her on the road for two days????
Thanks for the advice.

That's a hard one. I've regularly travelled 800 miles with cats and sometimes longer. Our previous cat and our new kitten are good travelers. We let them roam, attached to a rear seatbelt so they cannot interfer with the driver. Generally we do an 800 mile trip in about 18 hours with a few stops. I haven't ever had the cat want a litter box (I always have one to offer). A few cat treats and a bowl of water that they don't drink, suffice.
I had another cat that howled for 1000 miles until it could no longer howl - that was one tough trip. I'd ask the vets advice, but be inclined to tranquilize the cat for the air trip. It might be easier for all involved.
-
If you have the cat travel by air with your mom, be sure the carrier is the right size. I have a friend who travels east/west coast 2x a year. She has to have a middle seat on the airline, as most carriers only fit under that seat.
Another thing to keep in mind, when you go through security, your mom will have to take the kitty out of the carrier (as carrier must go through xray equipment), and hold the kitty while she walks through the metal detector. Would the kitty try to escape?
You might be better off putting the kitty in a carrier in the car and tranquilize her. Then when you stop somewhere, you could put the kitty on a halter and leash and take her out. Or give her a break out of the carrier but in the SUV. She probably won't want to eat or drink much. You can put a litter box on the floor of the back seat.
Also, you pay extra (like $80.) for the kitty to ride under the seat. Kitty can also go with the luggage, but I would not recommend that. Cats have been known to escape the carrier!
Good luck on transporting her. I would suggest she ride with you. -
Thanks girls. I had to laugh.... first about the howling for 1000 miles....lmao! She a big meower too. I can totally imagine that ...I just remembered she "howled" all the way home from the humane society. lol....yea, I can't do that!
The other laugh is about my mom trying to get her out of a carrier so they could run it through the scanner. NO WAY that is happening. LOL! Thanks again.
Hugs, Traci

Traci,
Wow! I moved from Maryland, to North Carolina, in Oct. 2006, in a carefree time BEFORE bc... We drove the whole way, and just had them (I have TWO cats!) in two separate cages, on the back seat, and they just sat there, the whole time, and didn't eat, drink or poop or pee... Spike was almost feral, so he was a 'scaredy cat', too. But, since moving here, he has really come out of his shell!!
Good Luck!!
Harley
PS I just think that cats are wonderful!!! They were SUCH good company for me, while I was going through bc dx and tx... I was here alone most of the time, since my dh was still working in DC, and didn't retire for another year...

Cats and travel.
We took our two cats to Europe about five times. The first two times we put them in the back of the plane but found they were very stressed being away from us, so the last three we took them on the plane and put their bags under the seat. They did very well. We think the noise of the engine helped with our female cat. She's usually the worst of the two when travelling. I should mention that our vet said to not give them any type of pill in case they got sick and choked on their vomit, and in particular if the cat is not with you..
When we first travelled with them in the car, my husband wouldn't put them in their bags. Unfortunately, one of them would walk everywhere including on the dashboard. Now they go in bags, and like other cats mentioned here rarely use their box, eat or drink, although we always carry their food and litter box in the car.
We had a friend who took his cat from Holland to France by car. The cat screamed almost the entire trip, until it lost its voice. Took days for it to return. That's tough when they scream.
