I just watched the Ellen TV show and H. Clinton was on.  She was having a conversation about breast cancer and said that Bill's mom had died from it and Ellens mom was a survivor.  Then she made the comment that she thought we should make it a goal to cure breast cancer in 10 years.  I'm not going to quote her, because I was not watching that closely.....but she didn't say "If I'm president I vow to cure breast cancer in 10 years"....it was more like "We need to make it a goal..."

Does anyone know if this is part of her actual political platform, or is she just talking in general terms?  I am NOT a Hillary supporter, but wonder if this is just one of those vague things that will go by the wayside or if this is one of those bold statements like when we made it a national goal to get to the moon....

    Anyone know more?

DebC I didn't see the show but she has been talking the last few days about finding a cure for bc............I may be just a Clinton cynic since way back when I had to tell my then 10 year old daughter what oral sex was but I think she is trying to get Edwards endorsement.........maybe someone else can enlighten me but isn't either N or S Carolina primary coming up?......I could be way off base though.........Shokk

I saw the show...my reaction was that other people with cancer are probably yelling at their TV sets going "what about ME, Hillary? Isn't my cancer just as terrible?  Why don't you want to cure MY cancer?"

Here's hoping they figure out how to cure all cancer!  Smile

One would think we'd be jumping for joy that we have a high placed senator in our corner.

She will propose  $300 million yearly.. to fund breast cancer research in the hopes to eradicate it in 10 years.  For all we know other types of cancer are greatly funded.  See all the new information coming out of prostate cancer research all the time.

Here's the press release from this morning:

WASHINGTON - A proposal by Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton would provide $300 million a year in increased government funding on breast cancer research, focusing on treatment and exploring possible genetic and environmental triggers for the disease.

The Presidential hopeful and former first lady discussed her plan with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on her television show, which was scheduled to air Monday. As president, Clinton told DeGeneres, she would set a goal of finding a cure for the disease within 10 years.

Clinton's plan would increase funding for breast cancer research and treatment through programs at the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program.

It would also help more low-income women gain access to screenings like mammograms by making them more affordable. Among other things, she would eliminate Medicare co-payments for mammograms.

Clinton also planned to propose a new program to explore racial disparities in diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

About 40,000 women died of breast cancer in the United States in 2007, and some 240,000 new cases were expected to be diagnosed this year.

Hey, at least it's a plan. Doesn't seem like anyone else even has one...

I agree, Felicia.  I hope she keeps talking about it.  I don't read any ulterior motives into it...I think she is genuinely behind us.

Of course my question would be has she proposed any legislation while senator supporting and/or extra funding for bc or for that matter any kind of cancer research and also out of their own private contributions to charity and/or the Clinton Foundation has it made any contributions to any bc research or again for any cancer research........does any one know?...........Shokk

Thanks Layne, nice find.  I'll give them 10 years and 1 day to report to us on the cure.  That's if Congress will pass this legislation when Hillary proposes it.

Important to note, too, that she has strongly supported the National Breast Cancer Coalition since she's been a senator. Not saying that McCain or Obama can't come up with a comprehensive plan, but I think Hillary has more of a vested interest since her mil died of the disease and, well, she's got boobs and all...
