Washing Hands

Yeah, I know, this is old news. But never hurts to revisit.
I was watching Dr. Phi about MRSA. That's a scary one. And the doctors recommended just what this video shows. Dr. Rosenfeld says to sing "happy brithday" two times while washing. Happy washing!

shirley, is it okay if i sing it in my head or does it have to be out loud? lol.
great video...i'm a stickler on clean hands...i think it's why i rarely get a cold. i really lol'd at the shoe flush...that's how i flush public toilets too.
-
No, you must sing the song out loud or your hands will NOT be clean.
Yep, I know what you mean by flushing those toilets. I also take a paper towel and open the door afterwards if you can't push it open with your body or shoulder. I became a "clean hand freak" while going through chemo. Took that alcohol stuff with me everywhere..still do.

When I worked for Whole Foods we were 'taught' this. (food service safety stuff) I don't think most people wash their hands for this long at home as it does seem a long time but it truly isn't.
I'm happy to report that my 19 month old daughter loves to wash her hands as I had to wash her hands before she started her day at daycare and the great thing is that she is no longer in daycare. Kids definitely mimic/emulate adults so I'm happy to wash my hands in front of her after 'bathroom' stuff.

Shirley,
I have heard that we should sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY...I thought 3xs, but maybe I am kind of anal.... lol
The foot thing, I do that, too... I don't want to touch anything in the bathroom, and I always try to use my foot to flush!
Thanks for that video! It is nice to be reminded of proper hygiene.

Jaybird, when Whole Foods taught the food safety, did they also instruct you guys not to use the door handle when exiting the restroom?
I am like Shirley and take an extra paper towel so I don't have to use the door handle.
At the grocery store now, they have the disinfectant wipes located right where you get the carts so you can wipe it down and your hands!
-
Me, too, with the paper towel, and not touching the door handle! EEK! Some places DO NOT have paper towels, so we have to improvise...I have to go back inside and get a piece of T.P. !!
-
I hate it when they don't have paper towels and we have to use that stupid blowing machine. It takes too long to get your hands partially dry. Therefore, I get some toilet paper to finish drying my hands. And also to open the door.
I was out with a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago (no not you, Harley
). We had been to Kohl's. Then we went out to eat. I took my alcohol handwash stuff out and asked her if she wanted to use it. She said no that God made our bodies to take care of those germs...acid in the stomach. Hmmm...then why are we told to wash our hands? Didn't think to ask her that. LOL

The dr's always tell you to wash wash wash! And if you can avoid shaking hands, do it. The kids at school are now taught to sneeze into their elbows (crook of the arm) instead of their hands.
-
Oh, and I sometimes feel like I should wash my hands after typing on my own keyboard (mine and dh's) because who knows if he picked his nose and typed. EWWWWWW...GROSS!
-
I work in a hospital where we have to undergo hand hygiene (or Infection Control) training every year. Once a year, we have to demonstrate hand washing. After we wash, our hands are swabbed. In a few days, we can see the results -- bacteria from where we missed washing thoroughly...it can be pretty gross. Part of our training also has to do with turning off the faucet, opening the door, and turning off the light with a paper towel in hand and steping on the handle to flush the toilet.
-
FYI, the hand washing 'needs' to include your getting inbetween your fingers, the webbed area, a place most people miss.
I, too, use paper towels to open bathroom doors - especially on airplanes! - but will use part of my sleeve or a jacket or whatever if I have to if there are no paper towels.
Shirley, I love the air dryers as they 1) are less wasteful (no paper litter) and 2) warm up my usually cold hands!
-
I'm a paper towel open the door with it user also.
this just grossed me out though: I worked at a college and always used the restroom near the science buildings. The faculty/staff have a private keyed restroom (one I used). Came in one day, and woman was in stall, so waited (it was a one-holer LOL). She exited, and I entered. As I shut the door I heard the outside door close--never heard the sink or paper towel dispense. Turned out she worked in the Nursing section--AND LEFT THE BATHROOM WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS!! This teacher was teaching our nursing students. Yuck! And it was lunch time--glad I use the towel routine to exit the washroom! -
Shirley:
I hate those blowers, too... I just don't think they get your hands dry, and I end up wiping them on my clothes, or a piece of t.p., which I also use to open the door on my way out.
WOW! All these stories really make me laugh, and cringe, too! EEW! I know, there are alot of people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom!
And EEW...Shirley, about your dh using the computer keyboard, and wiping boogers on it!!! YUCK!!

Okay, bad story here so don't read if you don't want to cringe!
A bunch of years ago and 'older' (read seasoned and I was fairly new) flight attendant and I had some 'fun' (???) on a long-haul flight. This was when the soap in the lavs were those little individually wrapped ones, way before liquid soap dispensers were the norm.
Anyway, we placed an unwrapped soap on the basin and marked with a pen an "X" on the underside so we could see if the person using the lav used that particular piece of soap or not. Well, as you can imagine, most people did NOT unwrap the soap and wash their hands!!! Yuck!!! It wasn't exactly 'fun' but more of an observation.
Also years ago, at the same airline, on the 747 going overseas we'd 'lock off' one lav for our use only. We had a 'code' as to if we were in there or not and we'd tell the passengers it was 'broken' or something and they couldn't go in there. We'd do this as the lavs would get trashed and there was no way we'd want to go in them after 6,8,10+ hours of use.....
(not 'right' but definitely 'smart'!)
