What is the weirdest food you ever had?

I was posting on a thread where they were talking about grits yesterday. I have eaten them twice, and both times they tasted kind of like wallpaper paste smells! Maybe someone fixed them wrong, but it got me thinking about food and odd things I have eaten...
All you vegans may want to cover your ears....
I have eaten just about every type of wild game Alaska has to offer: Black bear, wild sheep and goat, moose, caribou, lynx, beaver (no laughing), goose, wild ducks of every kind, all the "normal" seafood plus mussels, sea cucumber, octopus, and squid. I have even choked down whale blubber dipped in seal oil when it was offered at a native friend's house (to refuse would have been grossly rude).
SO....I thought it would be fun to talk about weird food. What is the oddest thing you have ever eaten? Was it better than you thought it would be? Got a recipe?

Before I tell you, I want to say I like my meat medium to well done.
That being said, there is an Arabic dish called Kibbeh that can be eaten either raw or cooked..it is made out of either lamb or beef, and cracked wheat, butter, parsley, and I don't know what else. I like it raw or cooked...in fact, it's my one of my favorite foods.
-
I don't know if I could eat some of what you've eaten, Deb. MY GOD!!! LOL.
-
LOL gsg -
When I was growing up we didn't buy meat. If we didn't grow it or hunt it, we didn't eat it
I went to a friend's house and had a hamburger that was beef. I spit it out because I thought it was spoiled! Wild game has almost no fat, so the regular burger tasted rancid to me.
I think that so much of what we eat is what we grew up with.
Kibbeh sounds like steak tartar (sp?) with more goodies. I'd eat that....

I haven't eaten many wierd foods, but my ex-husband was in the Peace Corps in Afghanistan. As a guest of honor, he was given a special dinner which he had to eat or otherwise insult the hosts. It was fried sparrows--yes, little birds! And a sheep's head. He was given the "best" part, which was the eyes!

When I was in Germany in the '80s I was served a whole little poached fish. The locals were all poking out the eyes and eating them first....even I thought that was a bit much!

I'm not really adventurous about my food, but when I was on my honeymoon I promised my husband that I would try whatever he did. We wnt to Disney World (1981). Anyway while there I tried snails in wine sauce, yuck and alligator tail, sort of like chicken. Also later on in our marriage my SI went to Texas to visit a friend and brought back rattlesnake, also like chicken but very spinney. I try not to do those things anymore.
-
weirdest for me is liver and I hated it yuck not adventersome
-
Deb, my dad was born in the Phillipines and used to make soup with fish heads. The eyes were a delicacy. Again yuck.
-
Eyes and heads - no-o-o-o-o!
I've eaten rabbit, deer, partridge and pheasant that people have hunted -- but that's about my limit!
Personally, I hate to encounter inedible animal parts in my food, even if they're not "weird"! For example, if something is made into a sauce that goes over rice or pasta, I'd rather not have to pick out bones or shells or skin, even if we're just talking chicken, fish, shellfish...
I ate in a restaurant/bar in Milan, Italy in 1982 that had a table of cured meats that you could point to and ask your waiter for slices of: basically all sorts of sausages and hams, including what my bandmates and I forever after called "the hairy boar's leg"! It was a wild boar's leg that had been smoked like a ham, but with a lot of the hide, hair and all of the hoof left on! Tasted good, though -- just made sure the waiter didn't put any of the hairy part on my plate!

We were on a Mediterranean cruise back in the -80's, one side trip was to Cairo, Egypt. We were told to NOT eat anything or drink anything, use the bathrooms, etc., until lunch because of bacterian issues there.....so at this beautiful hotel at the base of the pyramids the bus pulled in for lunch. It was served with lots of flourish. One lady at our table wondered about the meat.....I said it tastes like old sheep (was served with mint jelly) and asked her to please NOT ask the waiter what is was just in case it was something else and I was starving.
She of course couldn't resist - it was camel....and there were a line of them outside of the hotel covered in flies and smelling like you'd imagine a camel would smell (or my farts after chemo). I couldn't eat the rest of it and haven't forgiven that woman to this day..... wherever she may be.

No eyes for me.
I've eaten alligator and rabbit, moose, quail, venison and of those, I liked the moose ribs. While our son was studying in Bilboa,Spain, we visited him and he ordered Squid in it's own ink for me. It was not something I'd try again.

Have eated rattlesnake, squirrl, octopus, . Grew up with dad hunting for meat, he use to make turtle soup. I try not to think about where the meat comes from now and lots of times we just have veges.

I am not at all adventurous when it comes to eating. But when I was in high school about 10 of us worked in a 5 and 10 store. A boy who worked in the store next to our store went to Japan. He came back with a box of chocolates for us and after we all ate one, he told us they were chocolate covered bugs which were a delicacy in Japan. I had a chocolate covered bee. I would have never known it. But yuck when I found out. I am amazed at what some of you have eaten. Gosh, I would never try half of it! Great thread,Deb.
-
I haven't ever really eaten anything weird, but my uncle when i was little would have beef, lamb toungue with peanut butter and ketchup.
-
Oh my! You all have me beat, with Deb at the top of the list. I should have guessed that your palate would be as adventurous as your warm spirit.
For me it was tripe (stomach lining). For as much as I like the broth and hominy in Menudo, I just can't seem to handle the texture of the tripe itself. I just wobbles! lol
Neat thread. Now I know where to come when I am practicing weight control!
-
I've had bear, venison, duck, moose, squirrel, rabbit, rattlesnake, squid, skate, snails, lamb, goat hmm might even be more. I love squid and the skate was excellent. I have had chocolate covered ants also. Never had opossum even though I am from the south,,lol
Great thread.

Fun thread! Not real adventurous in food. Will pass on to friends who are battaling with weight issues lol!

OK...DUCK FEET? There's no meat on those little suckers....what do you eat? The webbing? The little bones?
I have an uncle that eats those cold pickled pigs feet that look like they are packed in clear jelly, limburger cheese oh, and pickled herring, those always smell really strong too. He lost his sense of smell as a baby so we swear he eats all the stinky food because he doesn't know what it really smells like.
I've had squid in its own ink too. I liked it.
Toungue with PB and ketchup??? Hmmmm, I would have to be really hungry. And I'm not real sure I want to try camel any time soon.
I've had gator but no snakes. I've eaten several kinds of chocolate covered bugs, and I actually tried some big fried grubs too. They were kind of bland and crispy....didn't taste like much of anything.
LOL at hairy boar's leg! I think I would have needed a few drinks to get that down!
Oh, and there are only 2 "regular" food I can't eat even to be polite....lima beans and LIVER!!! both make me gag.
So....who else ate something strange?

Hi All,
I was thinking about posting a thread of favorite foods. This one is way better. I have lived in Japan, England, France and traveled througout the carribbean so I have eaten a lot of strange things. The one thing that I cannot see how anyone could ever eat is brussel sprouts. I have tried fixing them many different ways since my husband loves them. No matter how hungry and starved I am, I would not eat them fixed any way.
PS. My favorite food is Merci Chocolates by Stork. Second would be watermelon. And a good plate of grits with butter and salt....mmmmmmm....
-
OK...grits must be an aquired taste....either that or the 2 times I had them they were made wrong.....LOL
-
Deb, you said:
"LOL at hairy boar's leg! I think I would have needed a few drinks to get that down!"
Ahem, I do believe a number of drinks had been consumed...
-
Thanks Alaska Deb for this fun thread. Grits are an acquired taste, have had them along with eggs, bacon +fried tomatoes in N Carolina.
Debbie I agree with you about brussel sprouts. I also do not like turnips both of those my mother made me eat.
Ann you were very brave, even if you had been drinking!LOL
-
I love grits.... you just need salt, pepper, and butter.
I had squirrel... tasted like chicken.
-
LOL...how come everything weird that we eat we say It tastes like chicken? Have you ever noticed that? No one ever says it tastes like pork roast, or it tastes like steak....it's always chicken.
All the things I've eaten, and I've never had squirrel.
