Just trying to liven things up around here.  Is there anybody out there, that truly hasn't lost all their hair.  Someone that's made it past 3 or more treatments and still isn't wearing hats or wigs.

If so, please let me know what "recipe" your on.  My daughter, I swear is a little psychic and she has this feeling that I won't.  She's right most of the time, but this one is extremely doubtful.

    Have a great day, Mary

    Hi Mary,

Unfortunately, my hair started falling out 13 days after my first infusion. Mine was DD so it fell out fast. AC took my hair and Taxol wiped out my eye lashes and eye brows. Guess that's a NO for me!

I lost all my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. I did not mind the hair (wigs, hats, scarves, etc.) or the eyebrows (pencils work miracles) but the eyelashes were hard. However, a little eyeliner on the top does help.

If you are going to take A/C, you will probably loose all your hair. But it is not the end of the world. I wore wigs at first and now I just wear a ball cap. Store clerks are really nice to me. I get to move to the front of lines in grocery stores. I play the cancer card and enjoy the little perks. God knows there are enough down sides to this disease. People feel good when they help you and I enjoy letting them feel good helping me.

    Hi Mary:

Depends on what regime you are on?  CMF don't lose it, it can thin, but unusual to go bald.

    Good luck!

I have the same as you and I got CMF,don't know what your dr. has recc'd for treatment.  My onc first said the ACT, but I said I did not want to be bald or sick, so he said CMF was reasonable.  I had 1 (slightly over) cent., no nodes, I have no idea what grade, estrogen receptor positive.  her2-

I have a ton of very thick hair, which did thin a bit in the front but not so  you'd notice.  I will be on treatment number 4 next chemo.

    Good luck to you.

Okay, I guess I'm an idiot but I don't know what ACT, CMP, or AC stands for.  I am getting Taxotere, Carboplatin, and herceptin.

You mean there is a choice!?!?!?!?!? I just went last week and cut my hair short (took off 11 inches) in preperation of losing it all. Oh well.... I did donate it to locks of love so it was for a good cause. Just wish the back of my neck wasn't so darn chilly now lol.

I'm not sure what I will be put on just yet..... I suspect I will be starting into that faze the beginning of may and really not looking forward to it :O(

I lost all of my head hair after my second AC treatment but I still have some eye lashes & eye brows although they are getting thin. The hair on my legs is growing like crazy & I still have hair on my arms. I just did my 4th treatment of Taxol, we shall see if I get to keep my new fuzz. Embarassed

I didn't loose every bit of my hair, I had a little buzz left and it started regrowing, very little regrowth though after 3rd treatment of A/C.  I'm now on taxol just did 4th treatment and so far nothing has changed. I still have eyebrows and eyelashes...so far.

    Mary,

You will likely loose your hair on this regime.  I lost my hair about 14 days after my first treatment...it totally was the worst part of the whole chemo experience except for the fatigue.

I never wore a wig, didnt want to at 41....  I wore bandanas outside the house and nothing at home.  I only wore one for 3 months and then said forget, I;m tired of all this headware and went au natural.  It really was an eye opener for others and made me feel proud that I could have the nerve to do this.

The good thing about loosing your hair is it DOES grow back!!  I am now 2 years post chemo and have lost count of the number of hair cuts I have had. I am once again cursing my hair...it is thick, thick and really curly...

All the best throughout your treatment!

    Hi Mary,

I lost my hair with the Adramycin and Cytoxin 3 weeks after treatment.

The Next time around and (I hope not for you) I had Navelbine--which back then 2002--it stated--thinning of the hair--I am on it now and it states--loss of hair-- and I have lost some.  I have been on Herceptin and there is no loss of hair with this one.  When you know what Chemo you will be on, ask your Oncologist if it will take your hair out--all of the meds do not.  I have had Xeloda, Tykerb and no loss of hair.  I hate the wigs--that is just me--got a lot of compliments--I think it was trauma from the beginning and I still don't like them, but had to wear one recently as Taxotere took out my hair.

So bank on nothing--ask all the questions you need, for all you need.

    Good Luck!!

Generally there is hair loss with carbo and taxotere (friend was on this one). I lost most of my hair on AC. I shaved my head but had enough hair left to act as velcro for my scarves. :-) But, it did't grow. It was just there. And very little and thin. It grew back on Taxol. I was on AC and Taxol.

Hair loss was not a big deal for me. And since I was feeling lousy, I never had to worry about how my hair looked!!! LOL

My twin had CMF 15 years ago and didn't lose her hair.  I had AC/T and lost mine.

Depends on what chemo drugs you are getting.

I, too, didn't wear a wig, hated it, but stuck to baseball caps and turbans.   I didn't wear anything around the house, just when I went out.

I was on TCH and wore ice caps and kept 40% of my hair, it was totally worth it.

I am also on TCH but I didn't hear about the ice caps until just recently.  Oh well, guess it's too late. You must have to do it before the first treatment.  Mary

    Hi RavDeb,

Are you saying you did not loose it all?I shaved mine in preparation for AC and Taxol. I would be thrilled to keep my fuzz throughout this ordeal. I've had two AC treatments and still have quite a thick fuzz.

but i am not shaving my head, this is too terrifying for me losing my hair is devastating and i'm hoping i have a few strands that will withstand this horrible ordeal. im on adriamyacin and cytoxin, i also hate all the scarves and caps even though i have bought a few. I do love to wear hats and wear them in the winter but i am not looking forward to loosing all my hair

    ME ME ME!!!!

not sure if you have it in the USA but I used scalp cooling and kept almost all my hair through 4 chemos including epirubicin and taxotere, the worst my hair got was with cmf following epi, the treatment was tablets and the scalp cooling only works with iv treatments.

It involves wearing a helmet chilled to at least -5c, I wore it for around 1 - 2 hours before iv then the same afterwards, it works by stopping the blood flow to your hair folicles while the chemo is in your system. It may not always work and lucky for me I had great results with it never needed to wear a wig or a hat, just had to give my hair lots of tlc, no blow drying, dying, and didnt over brush it, and bottles of leave in conditioner!!! (The photo on my avatar is taken not long after my taxotere treatment)

It was time consuming and uncomfortable but my long (bottle) blonde hair stayed put and was worth every second of it!!

I am on TCH. Had my first infusion on March 24. Started loosing my hair 14 days after. I swore I would be one of the few who did not loose their hair!Today(18 days after) I called my stylist to get me in ASAP (she got me in at 10 a.m.) to trim the wig I bought. My hair is coming out in clumps. Already had the breakdown on day 15 so I am dealing with this somewhat okay. Wish i had known about the cooling cap!

I am trying to remain positive. I have never been too fond of my hair. I have NO IDEA what the natural color is anymore! My hair never defined me. I am looking forward to seeing what color and texture it will come in as! I bought a really expensive wig and it looks good, just didn't want to have to wear it for a year!

You could look at it this way too.....if your hair follicles are being affected then that means the cancer cells are too! It is working in my eyes!

I didn't lose ALL my hair, either.  I got 4 txs of Taxotere & Cytoxan.  I got this 'receding hair line' thing happening, and overnight, white fuzz appeared...  Then in spotty areas, I lost the rest of my hair, but there always seemed to be hair covering my  head.  I looked like Sluggo!

It didn't start really growing til about 3 weeks after my chemo was finished.  Now, 6 months later, it is about 4 inches long!!  I got chemo curl and I'm LOVING the curls!

    Good Luck!

I did the Taxotere, Carboplatin and Herceptin.  Started losing my hair around day 21.  I did not loose all my hair but I might as well have as it was so thin on top.  I cut it very short but didn't shave as I had more around the sides and it looked better with a little hair sticking out around the edges of my cap.  I'm about 9 weeks out from my last treatment and I have a good start on new growth, I've started leaving the caps off some.  Didn't do wigs at all.

I am doing Carbo/Taxol/5FU. I lost all my head hair, most of my 'bikini' hair, but after three treatments, still have brows and lashes. Not sure if this convenience will last, but am enjoying it. I will be doing 9 more treatments so time will tell...

Wigs itch. What sadist designed these scratchy itchy caps? Also my head is shaped like an ancient Egyptian queen's with bulging occiput, and the wigs sort of slide around.

When this is over I will wash them carefully and find a place to donate them.

Trouble is I have gotten many compliments from people who don't know I am on chemo-they LOVE my new hair :)

I am 5 days away from my 4th tx of a/c. started losing my hair after tx 3. had tiny bit left but I shaved it so it wouldn't hurt so much falling out. I wear hats/caps while out and nothing while at home. don't mind hte baldness at all just the cool drafts sometimes. but at least the hot flashes aren't so bad with the bald head LOL.

I did not lose all my hair. 4AC 4Taxotere. I buzzed my scalp before chemo because I was told I would lose it all but it never did fall out. What I buzzed remained, but after the 4AC it started growing just a bit. I am just done with last taxotere and it is 'almost' long enough to put between fingers.

I did 6x of tax/carbo/herceptin and lost most of my hair not all.  It started falling aout about 15 days after my first treatment.  On Jan 1 2008 I had my husband shave it off.  We have clippers from when my son was younger and he had his 'buzz cuts' .  It was coming out in clumps and getting in my food and was always everywhere.  I am such a neat freak I could not stand it!! The hair I kept is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long and never fell out.   I am now 4 weeks out of my last chemo and seeing some fuzz (although it is grey ick)  I did just read it is about 6-8 weeks before real hair growth kicks in.  I have surgery this week too which I heard can slow down hair growth.  I just want to have a covering come the warm months.  I have a really cool wig but I know it will be hot to wear in  the real summer months.  I wore touques in the winter and now a baseball cap if I get a chill. I do need to buy a bandana for the hospital stay I think.

It was a really traumatic thing but once it is done no biggie!!! Just you with less or no hair!

I agree about it being traumatic at first.  In fact I think since I freaked out so much before it happen, once it did I was okay.  My daughter shaved it a week ago and although around the hairline where the wig and or scarves rub it's pretty bald, but she looked at my head yesterday and said the top and the back looks just like she did when she shaved it.  It's about a 1/4" long and no balding spots.  Who knows maybe I won't lose it all either.  Not that it helps now, but that gives me a little head start when the chemo's done.  I can only hope!!!  Mary

4 rounds of A&C hair fell out. Took a break for surgery and month of recovery, hair growing back. 4 rounds of Taxol, hair still growing back. 4 rounds of Taxotere, hair falls out again. Lost all head hair, kept some eyelashes and brows, lost all pubic hair (I wasn't expecting that, surprise!) and had to shave my legs the whole damn time. Lost around 14 days post each time.  I agree traumatic at the time but actually kind of cool once it's done, saves you time, money. Just remember, if you're going au naturel you need sunscreen up there. Wink
