Herceptin Treatment

My 45 year old sister had a 1.3 cm lymph node negative, estrogen positive tumor removed in June. Since then she's undergone AC + taxol chemotherapy. Her MUGGA test indicated a drop in heart function and her chemo treatment was interrupted after her first dose of taxol. Approximately two months later she went back to finish, receiving 3 more taxol treatments. Her tumor is Her-2-Neu positive. She is about to start a course of treatment with Herceptin. Her doctor recommends 52 weeks of treatment. We have read that a 9 week course of Herceptin may be as effective as 52 weeks and that it may limit heart damage, which is a big concern.
My questions are: has anyone completed 52 weeks of herceptin treatment, and if so has there been any detectable damage to the heart? Has anyone completed 9 weeks of herceptin treatment and if so, why did you decide to do the 9 week treatment? And finally, can anyone point us in the direction of the latest research about treatment with herceptin?
Thanks for any support or guidance.

I am anxious to hear what others have to say about this. I am six months into my Herceptin treatments and so far, so good.
-
I completed my year of Herceptin a little over a year ago. I had a brief drop--from about 67 to about 52--in my LVEF midway through, but it resolved itself, and I seem to be fine now. I've heard the news too about shorter treatment regimens and wish I knew the answer. Good luck to you.

I am currently on Herceptin and my last Muga was 47 - they decided to give me 2 more treatments and then if my Muga isn't better - they will stop treatment for awhile. I have also been trying to find info on shorter treatment with Herceptin - but so far all I have seen is studies that still appear to be underway. Since I am stage III I know my oncologist is going to want to continue the treatments.
I did ask my oncologist about the nine weeks and he said the current recommendation is still 1 year and that shorter treatment protocals were being tested.

i just finished 1 year of herceptin every 3 weeks and had cardiac spec scans every 3 months. although it didn't work for me i had no cardiac damage at all, thank God. truthfully i know nothing about the 9 week program. good luck, maria

I did fine on every 3 weeks for a year. i completed over a year ago and still have no evidence of disease(NED).
Hope your siter tolerates and does well too!

I also did fine on the 3 week schedule of herceptin for a year (muga results: 62, 60, 59, 59). I did do a different chemo (6FEC) that is less likely to cause heart damage in itself.
-
I did AC and taxol and then a year of herceptin every 3 weeks. No heart problems, actually had a higher MUGA at the end.
-
I did AC and taxol with herceptin for 12 weeks and finished the rest of the year without a problems. I did go to a heart doctor when I started just so I had someone watching be who knew about heart problems.
Good Luck'

I took the Herceptin treatment for 52 weeks, I did the muga scans and had a drop also. I also had alot of bone pain and alot of side effects that were left over from my long chemotherapy treatments. I took the Herceptin treatments every week till I had some palpitations and weakness, but it got better after two weeks so I kept on with the treatments. I was dx 2/05/05 have had mastectomy with Axilla dissection. I had two positive nodes. I still have a lot of side effects and am still disabled due to chemo and herceptin. I dont know about 9 week treatments but it may be better as far as the risk.
God Bless

I am almost done with herceptin (next month, May 30th!!). I started out as once a week and then I switched to once every three weeks. I have had a few MUGAs and no drop in my heart, I take 300 mg. CoQ10. But I have had palpitations, one day I was rushed to the hospital from work here because I was having a panic attack. I came back from the gym and was thoroughly cooled down, but my heart started skipping and I panicked. My ECHO was good though.

I also did 4 A/C and 4 taxol (dose dense) with herceptin starting with the taxol. I received herceptin every 3 weeks for 1 complete year and my heart held out fine.
I pray all goes well with you as well.

I took Herceptin almost 4 years ago, when a weekly infusion for a year was standard. I went into it with a pre-existing heart arrthymia and having taken TAC X 6. My MUGA was low normal to begin with, and they watched me closely, especially my cardiologist (who prefers echos to MUGAs to assess the LV function). I stayed in the low normal range throughout the treatment year, although my arrthymia kicked up and required treatment for the first time with Toprol. All is well now, and I had another echo last month with LV in the high 50%.
My onc says that they don't really know if Adriamycin can cause "delayed" congestive heart failure, and he is concerned enough about the Herceptin to watch me closely. But the benefits of the Herceptin are so striking that it was worth the heart risk to me.

I've had around 4 months of Herceptin once a week following A/C X 4 and Taxol X 4 (along w/Herceptin). My onc wants echos every 3 months and so far my LVEF is 60%. I don't notice any se's with it and pray my heart will stay strong. As far as a 9 wk course of Herceptin, I don't know if it's as effective -- it could be -- but it would seem that it might be safer for anyone who already has a hx of heart problems. My onc recommended a full year once a week, but I think I'll ask him about having Herceptin every 3 wks since so many of you are doing that.
God Bless !!!

I am currently undergoing herceptin treatment after having T & C with herceptin for 3 months.... I have 3 more months to go with herceptin only .My doctor initially stated one year , every 3rd week but he has since reduced that to 6 months every 3rd week,Haven't had but one MUGA????..

The use of herceptin is still evolving with regard to the dosage schedule. They will keep moving it down until they find the minimum length of time which is just as effective in preventing recurrence. They started with a year with weekly doses and are continuing to refine what is necessary. You may want to ask for another MUGA or echocardiogram (which is easier) at this time and another at the end of treatment.
Hope M.

My mom is on Taxol and Herceptin weekly, she is stage IV so she will be on it indefintely. Her Muga was 65% when she began Herceptin Oct 07, and she just had another one and it is still 65%. From what I have read, A/C and Herceptin togther seem to contribute to the heart problems more than any other combo. Luckily my mom did A/C 4 years back with her stage 1 dx, she has been fine on Taxol/Herceptin with the stage 4.
