Hi bluesky...I'm no longer from New York (born & raised on Long Island and moved to NC 20 years ago), but several of our women who post on singles here and over on Moving Beyond are from the city. In fact, I think that they just had a get-together and aim to have more. I'm sure that they'll be along soon to welcome you but, in the meantime, I will! We're so happy to have another single survivor here, though of course we're never happy about the reason we all got here, right?

I'm so sorry that you're having a bad time of it. So many women have had to learn the hard way who their friends really are among those they'd thought would be there for them. The good news, though, is that you'll find yourself a bit wiser and more discerning when it comes to building new relationships and, in doing so, give yourself a much better chance of being enriched and supported in all of life's ups & downs. As my mother used to say about fair-weather friends...."With friends like them, I don't need enemies."

So stick around, girl, we are alot of fun and also a great source of support for one another. Being a single breast cancer survivor actually CAN have its perks! (yes, I am serious)!! Laughing

jdash - I grew up on Long Island too.   Great Neck to be exact.  I haven't lived there since I left for college and my parents moved away about 12 years ago, so I don't go back too often.  But I miss the bagels -- Great Neck has the best bagels in the world!!!

I'm still in the NYC area fairly frequently (parents live in Westchester, sister is in Brooklyn) so I'll keep my eyes open for the next NY get-together.

Yeah, totally a LI babe here! Grew up......are ya ready? LEVITTOWN!!!! Yes, indeed! Went to Holy Trinity in Hicksville, then went to college in New Rochelle and got married and stayed there for awhile, then back to Farmingdale for a bunch of years, working at the Nssau County Medical Center. After I left, both of my parents died and my sisters moved down South here, so I don't get back at all. But Lauren, I hear ya about the bagels....and the Italian bialys, the Lenten loaves, the prune danish....and don't get me started on the pizza....OMG!

So yes, my dear chicas, LI is where I grew my balls! Innocent

I worked as a social worker at the Medical Center in East Meadow (Hempstead Tpke.) and also taught sociology at Five Towns College in Seaford (I think it's in Dix Hills now). Yes, small world, huh?

Once I get my finances in manageable shape (like in a year!), I'd love to plan a trip up North! I can stay with my college roommate in Rockville Centre and get together with y'all for a MAJOR PARTAY!!!!!! When is Beth getting married? Maybe we can plan it for around then and have our own celebration for her. Whaddaya think?

I'm in for a NY get-together. I'll be there as long as I can plan around flying and Miss Avery. Just tell me where and when!

Oh, and Marin, I'm sorry but Chicago has better pizza than New York..... Laughing

Jaybird...I'm absolutely open to that possibility (pizza) and am not at all jingoistic about my NY beginnings. It's just that North Carolina pizza...? Uh-uh. A few Italian families opened pizza places back in the early 90s and we could get some decent stuff back then (including garlic knots and "real" cannoli), but the chains have knocked them out, so now its Papa John's or nuthin.' I never tried pizza in Chicago, but I'd be psyched to.....since I love Chicago, I'm sure I'd love the pizza!

So does anyone know when Beth's wedding will be? I want to say it's planned to occur within a year, but......?

first of all marin, screw your college roomate, you totally have to spend at least one night in my guest room.  I mean, this is your shot, to shower in my bathroom, and use every product under the sun that we talk about in the makeup thread... lol

You're too skinny to wear my clothes- but what size shoe are you???

I want a NYC get together that has nothing to do with my wedding... um, have you watched bridezillas? LOL-- I'm actually getting married in a private ceremony for family only in Jamaica next year...

the brunch jdash planned for the get together was awesome-- but if it was jaybird, and fitchick coming in for a weekend-- I say we keep it a cozy group, and go DRINK at night, and have FUN FUN FUN.

wouldn't be hard with this bunch.

and the best pizza in nyc is at kings in penn station.

I don't know about great neck and their bagels... LOL just kidding.  I don't think anywhere in LI could mess up a bagel.  Although I love bagel boss in plainview.

Marin, I live not too far from NUMC hospital.  You could fly jet blue into JFK and i'll pick your butt up.  if we had a tentative date, we could talk about the financial stuff on the side...I'd volunteer to buy your plane ticket in a heart beat-- as long as you'd fly coach...

I'm getting ahead of myself here...

OMG, Beth, now you're just the sweetest girl ever! I'd be so psyched to make a trip "home"! And meeting you all in person...well, I can't imagine that it could feel like anything but a homecoming. I swear, I feel like you're my best friends and it's ridiculous to think that we haven't shared non-cyberspace, isn't it? Of course, alot of you girls have already met, so it's probably not as mind-blowing as it feels to me.

Anyway, I could never let you pay my airfare, but I'll totally take you up on your guest room! We could have a real pajama party, huh? (speaking of "pajamas," I won't resurrect the MOJO thread just to report this, but I actually bought that stringy-back nightie from VS and it's soooooo sweet! Got it in white and brought it to J's the last weekend I was there. As we all know, I left before bedtime. Oh well. NEXT! Wink).

So scrap the idea of using your wedding as a plan-around, though I was thinking about our having a wild bachelorette party. Maybe we'll just have to have one for all of us then....all we bachelorettes! As for when, we'll have to synchronize our schedules. I'm thinking that I won't be able to get away from work anytime soon....maybe August?

    Whaddaya all think?

I'm in! Can't wait to par-tay with ya'll! I cannot do August 23/24 as it's Miss Avery's 2nd birthday weekend and I've already scheduled those as vacation days but I could probably make it another weekend in August, just let me know.

Marin, I'd be more than happy to give you a buddy pass. It's stand-by but free. Let me know as it wouldn't cost me anything. Wink

As for bagels, NY sure does have good bagels! (better than Chicago!)

LorenaB - I'm currently in the bagel capital of Great Neck, and I sure hope this doesn't come across as prejudicial, but was rather shocked last year to find that my closest bagel store is now owned and run by an Asian family. Didn't notice any significant change in the taste or quality (and don't know if this particular place kept strictly Kosher under previous owners), but the community demographics sure are changing!

And BethNY, when I was growing up in Laurel Hollow, I well remember late night runs to a 24 hour bagel place in Plainview. We'd buy a dozen, and were lucky if a half dozen were left by the time we got back home.

Marin - I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with anything (or anyone) south of the LIE. Isn't that a different country?

my PS lives in Laurel hollow-- love that area.  I had one better than a bagel tonight-- we went to Ben's deli, and I had a huge potato pancake with apple sauce.

yeah, my ass will pay for it tomorrow.

Oh Jaybird, I will totally take you up on the buddy pass, as long as it doesn't put you out in any way?! Thank you!!!!!

You guys have me so hungry for REAL bagels! My typical bagel feast is an asiago cheese bagel with jalapeno cream cheese...from Breuggers. You don't have Brueggers up North, do you? And instead of potato pancakes, I NEED some gorgeous cheese blintzes smothered in sour cream....YUMMMMM!

definitely sounds like we need two get-togethers - one just for bagels and blintzes!

Beth -PS stands for....? Yes, Laurel Hollow is incredibly beautiful. Very isolated for a girl growing up, but such a lovely area - though I believe it is much more developed now. No one had ever heard of it when I was a kid, even people in nearby neighborhoods! and despite the fact that anyone driving across the Nassau Suffolk border via Northern Boulevard traveled right through it (tho blinked and missed it).

Ah, Ben's Matzo Ball soup - best comfort food/cure for a cold ever. Hope you're feeling better Julia!

totally had matzoh ball soup too last night.  Jdash I hope you're feeling better soon!

PS stands for plastic surgeon, and yes, the area has definitely been developed much more, although you can't get cell reception there to save your life.

Marin- your fancy bagel sounds good- but nothing beats an egg bagel and butter from bagel boss at 3 a.m. when you have the munchies.

Although, it's been a while since I've done that.
