Hi fellow canadians, looks like that dose dense (every two weeks) regimen is more common in the US than in Canada. I'am curious to see if you girls have/had dose dense (every two weeks) regimen or the standard regimen (every three weeks).  Is anyone also know when dose dense would be recommended? I had 4 cycles of AC every three weeks and 4 cycles of taxol every three weeks and now on Herceptin for a year.

I'm reading Dr. Marla Shapiro's book right now and she was treated in 2004 and her treatment included dose-dense chemotherapy.

I have yet to see the oncologist but will definitely ask him if that is an option for me. I'm very healthy otherwise and I really feel taking an aggressive approach to this is the route I need to go.

    Hi Sig

I had dose dense, 4 ACand 4 Taxol every  two weeks due to a very aggressive tumor along with being Triple Negative...my oncologist is from Sudbury. Best of luck.

I had dose dense AC and taxol in 2006 at Princess Margaret in Toronto.  I don't know the criteria they used, but it was my second round of BC (HR/PR- Her2+ this time) and the docs' thought that it was a good idea to treat this round "agressively".

I had a good response to the treatment in that the tumour shrunk to nothing, but it was very hard on me - hospitalized twice, IV antibiotics and blood transfusions.  And I still have neuropathy in my hands and feet.  I was 60 at the time, it might be easier on a younger woman.

    Hi Sig,

I was noticing the same thing re: dose dense being more common in the U-S.  I'm glad you started this thread.

I'm almost halfway through 4 AC, 4 Taxol.  I'm a once every 3 week girl.

Receiving treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto.

Hi Lisa, I think it might have something to do with ER/PR- and node positive (in Canada). If I knew more about all this prior to the start of my treatment I would asked to my oncologist but at the time of my diagnostic I did not know anything about chemo. May be someone will shed some light. I guess you will also get herceptin as you are HER+. I am receiving my Treatment at the Ottawa Cancer Center. Best of luck to all.

It is my understanding that there have not been clear indications that dose-dense give better or worse statistics than the 3-week protocol.

Sig -- yes, I'll be getting Herceptin too - after 21 blasts of radiation post-chemo.   Fun times - not!!  But I sure am glad Herceptin exists for us HER-2 positive gals.  I bet you are too.

I think I'll ask my oncologist about the prevalence of dose dense treatment in the U-S at my next appt - which is April 11th.  He might have some info I can share with the group.

    Cheers, Lisa
