plastics and cancer

I was reading all the posts about alcohol as a risk factor for bc. I have wondered if drinking wine caused mine too. But I am starting to read more about a substance in certain plastics called bisphenol a. It is used in those plastic drinking bottles you can buy at walmart or at sporting equipment stores. The kind that are real hard and don't shatter when you drop them. Apparently this chemical can leach out into the liquid you put in these bottles. When it enters the body it mimics estrogen, raising estrogen levels in the blood. Researchers believe higher estrogen levels are associated with bc. I used to have one of those hard plastic water bottles. I'd fill it up at work in the morning and sip on it all day, thinking I was being healthy by drinking lots of water. I got bc at age 38. Now I wonder if that was why....

If you want to see something truly frightening about a possible cause for cancer, go to the url below - it is a story about what is in our drinking water both bottled and tap.

Yes, plastics are a know hazard. Ditch the bottled water and drink the real thing. If your household source is crummy, maybe a faucet filtration system would help.

Hi
Also stay away from plastics W/ #3 & #6 in the recycle triangle area...there is a website on this..Healthier food uses of plastics...I also drank out of a #7 bottle (water cooler) for 7 years Yikes!!!

I use a Camelbak bottle that has #2 plastic and I understand that this is preferable. I make sure not to let it undergo extreme temps and, so, don't put it in the dishwasher or freezer.
I WAS wondering, though, what you all who eat frozen dinners (like Lean Cuisine) do to microwave them? Have you found a glass dish with a top that mimics the size of most frozen dinners? I'm very concerned not only about the plastic container they come in, but the plastic film coverings too. I really don't want to give up my LCs though! I like Amy's, but LC has such variety. And I need something quick for lunch at work or else I just won't eat all day!

Marin...good question about frozen foods. I am looking to replace all my plastic with Pyrex for leftovers and for freezing. It's hard to get away from plastic in the kitchen...egads! And it seems as though everything you buy is in plastic...how to get away from it is driving me nuts!

I take the frozen foods out of the plastic and heat in the microwave in a small glass baking dish - like pyrex. I used to cover with plastic wrap but now I just put a plate over it with a little area open for venting. Only thing I wonder out is if the frozen foods are cooked in the plastic dish in which they are puchased...?

That's a very good question RRS.. Maybe the manufacturer could tell you. There's probably a telephone # for consumer questions on the frozen food box.
