How Often Are Your Onc Visits?

I went to onc. today for 3 month check-up.  It is one year this month from the end of my chemo.  My mastectomy was 18 months ago.  I had Stage 1 Grade 1 IDC with no lymph involvement, HER-.

I asked if I now "graduated" to 6 month visits and he replied that the new protocol is 3 months visits for 3 years.  I seem to remember his telling me 6 mos. after a year when I first saw him, and I was very disappointed to hear this.  I will do it, but I am not happy!

Can some of you tell me if you are being told the same by your doctors?  Thanks.

    Hi,

Im about 15 months out of treatment, May will be my next 6 month follow up....I think the onco told me 3months for the 1st year, 6 months for two more years, then he will cut me loose to once a year until I either need him or I end hormonals....I dont like it either but guess I too will do what they say....

Being the neurotic individual I am, I am completely happy with having visits as often as possible.  I have been going every 3 months (dx. 9/05, chemo over May of 06, surgery June of 06, rads July/Aug of 06) since my "stuff" ended.

It's kind of like the reason I chose a bilateral-I don't want any extra fear hanging over my head if not necessary (or hanging from my chest, if you will).

    Love and prayers, Deb

I had just graduated to annual visits when I got my second cancer, so it's a do-over for me:

Every three months for two years, every six months for 3 years, then yearly.

The biggest risk of recurrence is in the two year window.

Even though my breasts are now gone, and my onc knows I'll show up quickly with any mets-like complaint, he still insists on the three month routine for now, mainly to check labs (CBC and liver functions, no tumor markers.)

Six months!  And I'm so happy because after doing neoadjuvant chemo, mast, rads and then six more months of Xeloda I was going all the time.  This will be my second six month visit.

Thanks, everyone, for answering.  Your replies make me feel better.  My mother is the only survivor I personally know, and she was one year at 3 months, then 6, then annually.  But, that was 11 years ago. (she's still going strong!!)

I just wanted to know there were others having the same number of visits.  I get anxious every time I go, guess that's why I even questioned his answer.

I was every 3 months for a year and a half and then every 6. I was nervous about stretching out the appointments but I found having fewer appointments lowers my overall anxiety level. What one of my doctors said was the goal was to un-medicalize us, to get us out of the doctors' offices and back into our lives so we don't continue to feel like patients. Safely, of course.

Wow.... I had bilateral mastectomies in May 2006, rads and then tamoxifan.  Saw my onc in October 2006 and he said to come back in 2 years...made an appointment for October 2008.

I called the cancer clinic a couple days ago and was told that I am not to see onc unless I have a recurrence.....what do you think of that....

I am 2 years 7 months from diagnosis and surgery.  The routine was every 3 months for both onc and breast surgeon.

My follow up appointments were this month...I graduated to 7 months for the breast surgeon and one year for the onc.  The onc added that is unless there are changes to my condition.

I'm relieved to have the extended periods at this point.  The family doc and my gyn are attentive and I trust them.

My last onc visit was Feb. 5th, and it was a 3 month visit.  My onc told me that I won't have to go back to see him for SIX months!  YIPPEE!  YAHOO!  I really don't like going there all the time, and I'm just as happy to have one less dr. appt.

BTW, as of yesterday, I am ONE year Cancer Free!  My biopsy was March 15th 2007, and my surgeon took it all out!  I know this because my path report after my bi-lateral mast. showed only NORMAL TISSUE!!  YAY!

I am hoping that they will tell me at my 2 yr. check up that I can go ONCE a year, but maybe I am just dreaming.

    Good luck, ya'll!

I still see my onc every three months, breast surgeon every six months.   My breast surgeon will release me after two years, onc is lifetime.   My twin sees her onc once a year, she was dx 15 years ago.
March 29th will be my one year anniversary date of my lumpectomy.   I finished chemo Sept/07.

Harley, congrats on your one year anniversary. I remember when you joined here!  :-)

My onc told me I should be seeing a doc every 3-4 months at the least for the next three years.  Since I still see the medical onc, radiation onc and breast surgeon, I schedule the appointments to see at least one of them quarterly.  I'm happy with that because it gives me a (false?) sense of security.

I was dx 8-04. I was on the three month plan for the first year after finishing herceptin in 7/06.  I graduated to the six month plan, and I thought I would graduate to the one year plan last visit, but she said not until 2010. UGH.

I saw her in december, and said, next time, I'll see you in a tank top and flip flops. We had a laugh that my hair is now longer than hers.

I finally feel like this whole doctor appt thing is getting easier.  I know people used to tell me it would get better with time, but of course you only half believe them.  To all you one/two year out of tx gals, I just want to say- those gals before me were right, and it really does get easier.

Terry, did you have a bilateral mastectomy? I ask because I don't think my surgeon will ever release me (I had a lumpectomy) and i don't want him too. I feel more confident with his exams.

    MOTC,

I am not Terry, but my surgeon told me that I will see him once a year, for the rest of my life.  He will just examine my breasts.  I had a bilateral mastectomy, but we can still have local recurrence in our breasts, so that is the reason.  I really like my surgeon, so I'll be sad to only see him once a year.  He's a really nice guy!

    What Beth said is true:

Even though I went a couple of rounds with my onc., the visits are now getting better, and he almost feels like a 'father figure' to me now.
