I posted this on the treatment section...but I don't know if everyone reads that.
I just completed my a/c treatments 2 1/2 weeks ago. after my 2nd one my feet, on the bottom, got red areas and was painful. It would get better after a few days. The doc thought it was hand/foot syndrome caused by the the adriamycin. well I had my first taxol treatment on monday, I also recieve avastin. Tuesday my feet were really bad. then I woke up today and my hands are kinda swollen, red areas like my feet and they hurt. Also a weird rash on the top of my hands.
I'm seeing the doc tomorrow but have any of you ever had anything like this?
I just dont want them to have to stop my treatments because of this but dang it sure hurts.

Dear Teresa,
Let me reassure you right away. This is a common side-effect of the Taxol family of drugs as well as of the A/C. I was told to expect redness, swelling, and rash on hands and feet from the Taxotere. Although unpleasant, it's not dangerous. My BS suggested having treatment with my feet in ice water (!); I don't know yet if I can go quite that far. This said, it's always a good idea to see your doctor for confirmation that you're OK in every way.
How are you coming along on the Avastin? How long do you take it? Are you on a clinical trial?
Hugs,
Annie

I also did AC, then Taxotere & Carboplatin. My onc strongly rec'd against Taxotere (she wanted me to do Taxol instead) due to the side effects you are describing. But, I had mets and from my research thought Taxotere was a better option for me.
I realize you're on Taxol and not Taxotere, but they're are from the same taxane family. My onc had 2 pts whose hands & feet got red and peeled and req'd hospitalization due to Taxotere. Not to scare you, but you're right to be concerned and keep an eye on it.
Let me jump to a NON-medical suggestion that I found during my research. To help prevent against neuropothy and nail lifting, I used frozen gel products to minimize that likelihood. (I also used the gel-caps to save my post-AC very short hair).
I noticed that you are from KS. Although the study was in France, the manufacturer is also in KS ... You might want to check it out at www.elastogel.com If you end up interested, pm me or call each of the companies that sells the products as there was quite a variation in price.
I used them 8/06-11/06. Dry ice cost $1/lb and I'd use 8-10 lbs in the cooler we'd bring to chemo. It worked for me - no redness, no neuropothy, nails stayed normal and ... I kept my hair!
Best to you,
CalGal
