Thanks for clarifying em, I was confused.
The thing that bothers me most about Spitzer is the hypocrisy. I think prostitution should be legal and regulated, the way it is in Vegas and Holland because that would take the abusive pimps out of the scenario. I'm not for prostitution per se, I just believe that the government doesn't need to waste tax dollars going after victimless crimes- unless there is a victim because prostitutes can be raped. I know all about the sociology about why many women and girls get into the business etc.etc. I also realize that there is often mob, drug and other things going on which are legitimate reasons for investigations. Even though many NYers think Spitzer is a prick, I'd hate to think that this is all about prostitution and bringing Spitzer down for political reasons.
I'm appalled that bringing a prostitute over state lines is a crime. He or she is not cargo or property and assumingly not a minor so that seems like a ridiculous federal offense.
The media loves these kind of stories, there was barely a mention of the soldiers killed in Iraq yesterday, the biggest loss of Americans in Iraq in months.
Shirley, let us not forget all of the republicans who have been caught in sex scandals-- maybe they don't tell you about that on faux news:
* IDAHO SEN. LARRY CRAIG was publicly admonished by the Senate Ethics Committee for improper conduct after his arrest in a sex-sting operation in a men's toilet in June 2007.
The Republican lawmaker pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after he was caught in an undercover investigation of lewd behaviour in a men's room at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. He later tried to recant saying he agreed to a misdemeanour charge without consulting a lawyer and in hopes of quickly disposing of the case. He remains in the Senate.
* LOUISIANA SEN. DAVID VITTER, a Republican and social conservative, apologized and admitted "a very serious sin" after he was linked last July to a Washington escort service. Vitter said his misdeeds occurred several years previously and he had dealt with them in confession and marriage counselling. He remains in the Senate.
* MARK FOLEY, a Florida Republican, resigned from the House of Representatives in 2006 after it was disclosed he had sent sexually explicit text messages to teenage boys who served as interns in the House. The revelations led to charges that Republican leaders tried to cover up the matter.
* FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH, a Republican, has admitted he was having an extramarital affair while leading the impeachment charge in Congress against Clinton.
* SEN. BOB PACKWOOD, a Republican from Oregon, resigned in 1995 after 26 years in Congress. He had been accused of sexual misconduct with 17 women, among other charges
* REP. DAN CRANE, a Republican from Illinois, and REP. GERRY STUDDS, a Democrat from Massachusetts, were censured in 1983 for illicit affairs with underage pages. Crane, who had had sex with a teenage girl, was voted out of office but Studds, who had had an affair with a boy, was returned to office many times.

Here's a detailed although not complete list of democrats and republicans from the washington post
Washington's Sex Scandals
T.W. Farnam reports on Washington.
New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized today after allegations surfaced of his involvement in a prostitution ring. Four people allegedly connected to the ring, identified in court papers as the Emperors Club VIP, were arrested last week. The ring arranged connections between wealthy men and more than 50 prostitutes in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Miami, London and Paris, prosecutors said. According to the court documents, Spitzer is the person identified as "Client 9," who paid for a tryst with a woman at a Washington hotel on Feb. 13.
Washington has had its share of sex scandals. Here's a brief look back:
Early Days
1802 - Thomas Jefferson is rumored to be having an affair with his slave Sally Hemings. DNA tests of their descendents confirm it in 1998.
1884 - Grover Cleveland wins his election despite opponents making an issue of his illegitimate child with chants of "Ma, ma, where's my pa? / Gone to the White House, ha, ha, ha."
1970s to Present
1974 - Police stopped Wilbur Mills, an Arkansas Democrat and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, for speeding and his passenger, a stripper with the stage name "Fanne Fox, the Argentine firecracker" jumped out of his car and into the capital's Tidal Basin.
1976 - Rep. Wayne L. Hayes, an Ohio Democrat and chairman of the House Administration Committee, resigned after a scandal broke involving his giving a raise to his mistress, secretary Elizabeth Ray. She later told reporters "I can't type. I can't file. I can't even answer the phone."
1980 - Rep. Robert Bauman, a leading Republican conservative from Maryland, pleads not guilty to soliciting sex from a 16-year-old boy and charges are later dropped after he agrees to treatment for alcoholism.
1983 - The House reprimands Illinois Republican Dan Crane and Massachusetts Democrat Gerry Studds for having sexual affairs with congressional pages.
1987 - The Miami Herald reported on a jaunt between Colorado senator and presidential candidate Gary Hart and a 29-year-old Miami model named Donna Rice on a yacht called Monkey Business in the Caribbean resort of Bimini.
1988 - Democratic Sen. Brock Adams of Washington denies allegations from the daughter of a family friend that he drugged and raped her. Investigations find no evidence of wrongdoing but Brock later decides against running for re-election when more women come forward.
1989 - The House voted to reprimand Rep. Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, for his relationship with a male prostitute whom he hired as his personal assistant.
1991 - Virginia Democrat Sen. Charles Robb denies allegations that he associated with drug users and had an affair with a beauty queen and goes on to serve 10 more years in the Senate.
1992 - Gennifer Flowers is paid to recount a 12-year affair with Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton to a tabloid newspaper shortly before the Democratic primaries.
1992 - Republican Sen. Bob Packwood of Oregon apologizes after 10 women accuse him of sexual harassment and later resigns after the ethics committee found him guilty of sexual misconduct.
1994 - Rep. Mel Reynolds, an Illinois Democrat, is indicted and later convicted for sexual assault of a 16-year-old campaign volunteer.
1998 - News of President Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky comes to light through a sexual-harassment suit against him by Paula Jones.
2004 - New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey steps down after disclosing an affair with his homeland-security adviser, an appointment he made despite the man's limited qualifications.
2006 - Sexual emails and instant messages between Rep. Mark Foley, a Florida Republican, and congressional pages surface just before the November midterm election.
2007 - Sen. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican, is reported to be on the phone records of a Washington madam.
2007 - Sen. Larry Craig, an Idaho Republican, pleads guilty to disorderly conduct in a men's room and a police officer testifies he was soliciting sex.
2008 - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologizes after a report that he was involved in a prostitution ring.

My icons are from Smiley Central. Anyone who wants the icons I use can get them by clicking on the little blue (or it may look purple) box at the end of this post. You have to load the mywebsearch toolbar onto your internet home page and use mywebsearch as your default search engine. I've been using it for a while and there are no bugs, no cookies, no spam, etc. so it appears safe and hassle free. I actually like the toolbar because you can customize and add icons for webpages you go to a lot - I have bc.org as an icon on the toolbar (which probably explains why I spend too much time here!). mywebsearch has access to Google and Yahoo and the other major search engines so even with mywebsearch as your default, you can still use Google. In addition to getting access to Smiley Central, the mywebsearch bar has other features such as Cursor Mania, so you can change your boring old cursor and try something different.
(BTW, I'm not promoting the mywebsearch site and don't have any connection to it. It's just one of these few freebies that I've downloaded that I'm actually happy with!).
-
Another point I wanted to make is that many countries in europe laugh at the USA for what we consider a sex scandal and consider the US prudes about sex and sexuality. I tend to agree with them, it's like a witch hunt sometimes and smacks of McCarthyism. I even think that Republican Larry Craig was railroaded and didn't commit a crime-- though I despise his hypocrisy about gays.
-
Bessie--Although mywebsearch has been deemed safe--it's main criticism
has been that it can significantly slow down a computer. Do you find any effect on your computer speed?
-
Amy, seems like you and I can't agree to disagree. I saw on FOX News about Craig. And I think his arse should be kicked out! I've never said cheating, stealing, or breaking the law was beneath republicans. They are JUST people, and I don't trust them a whole lot more than dems.
Hey, EVEN priests and ministers do AWFUL things! As the Bible says, Amy, don't keep your eye on man or you will be disappointed. That's not a correct quote, but you do understand. Yes, I know, you don't believe what the Bible says. But I dare say you would probably agree with that verse. I would have been disappointed often if I kept my eye on man. And sometimes I get tricked and am disappointed.
Inasmuch as you do not watch FOX New you have no idea what they report. BUUULLLLIEVE me, they report the bad as well as the good.
BTW, I didn't read all that garbage you posted. I suppose you took the time to google it. However, I'm not wasting my time rehasing the scandals.
The people I really feel sorry for as far as Spitzer concerned is his wife and three teenage daughers. How emabarrassed they must feel. And the shame of all this is he went after prostitute rings, and now he's caught. Karma?
-
Well if my husband publicly humiliated me, they'd have to find me. I wouldn't be on any podium with that forlorn face standing next to my man who was willing to pay thousands for any other girl walking and talking. That should never have happened. He should have been a man, stood there by himself and taken the heat by himself.
I wouldn't want that guy running the affairs of State. What else is he willing to do?
-
Rosemary, I agree with you. I feel so sorry for the women and children.
He has ruined his career.
And it is a sex scandal no matter what other immoral nations think. When one holds a high office more is expected of them. As it should be! JMHO!
-
'nother subject---Just letting you know Senator McCain will be Hannity and Colmes guest on Amy's favorite station
this Thursday March 13th for you true undecideds.By the way, something I just found out -did not understand McCain's awkward arm movements. Turns out they are a result of his torture.
He can not lift his arms above his head.----This is why his arm movements are so stiff.
"After his aircraft was shot down in 1967 over North Vietnam, McCain was captured with a shattered knee and both arms broken.
He was regularly beaten and bound in awkward positions with "torture ropes." In one ferocious beating, his captors re-broke his left arm. " -
Shirley,
Your opinion is my opinion too. I don't want them in public office. They're always looking for lobbyists, and he's got the right credentials.
Geraldine Ferraro has spoken, and put her foot into it. I was just reading that new flap. She was never one to not speak her mind. Now we'll have to wait and see if Hillary asks her off the campaign.
It's a long time till August.
-
As far as Spitzer is concerned, I think there is a difference between a politican who is simply caught with his pants down vs. one who publicly espouses a one position while living his life differently. I don't care about the former; I think the latter should be strung up by their ____ (fill in the blank with your preferred piece of anatomy).
I didn't have any issue with Bill Clinton. What he did or what he does is between Hillary and him. She is the only one who should judge him. But I do have an big issue with people like Mark Foley or Larry Craig, who speak out publicly against homosexuality and yet then are then found to have engaged in gay relationships. And I have a big issue when someone like Spitzer is found to have been engaged with prostitutes, after he build his reputation by vehemently (and often, maliciously) prosecuting white collar criminals and positioning himself as being on the moral high ground.
Susie, no I don't find that mywebsearch has affected the speed of my computer. You can always try downloading it to see if you like it and whether it slows you down, and then, if you don't like it, you can just delete it off your system.
-
I personally to have an issue with Bill Clinton. He was having sex in the Oval Office. It was on MY time. It's not just about he and his family. He was the prez of our country and I expect more out of him or other presidents. He could have waited until he was out before having a relationship with a kid. It's wrong...plum wrong. And when that man pointed his finger in MY face and said, I was not having sex with THAT woman....that irked me. The blame is on him, not Monica. He was the big guy. She was start struck. And I don't blame Hillary if she hates Monica (not that she's ever publicly mention it as far as I know). Wrong is wrong. What about vows?

Lou Dobbs has his dander up. Obama was telling the people today that he is not going to round up the illegals and send them home and then said something about ol Lou. Lou got all upset because he's using his name, but I got upset because I fear Obama has now opened the flood gates. Get here at all costs. I'm not sure this will backfire on him cause only Lou seemed to pick up on it.
-
Rosemary----I saw that and roared with laughter. Lou is someone you don't want as an enemy and he certainly has no love lost for McCain but
I suspect after this his relationship with McCain will seem like a love affair compared to what's about to happen to Obama. ------It's one thing to pander to a certain audience in an election but this----What a lapse in judgement. Lou Dobbs has a long memory.
-
Since "our leaders" have for decades been getting a little on the side, I really have no problem with that. I just get ticked when they are so egotistical and stupid that they get caught. The lack of judgement and stupidity is what scares me.
Then all the hoopla and $$$$ spent on "informing" the public thru senate committies, and all with MY tax dollar.,
-
Shirley-- the president, no matter democrat or republican works 24/7 365 and is on call even if on vacation. Do you not think presidents should have sex at all???? How do you know he was having sex on your time- maybe he was on his lunch break.
I had a huge problem with Clinton's behavior-- unlike most of my democratic friends. I agreed with his impeachment and thought he should resign. Although the visual of Clinton getting a blow job while talking to a foreign head of state is not one I wanted in my mind, my issue was with his lies, particularly under oath. Clinton lies under oath about sex-- he gets a slap on the hand and loses his law license for one year (when he wasn't even practicing law, he was president), Scooter Libby lies under oath about outing a spy who's husband spoke out against Bush and he gets a fine and jail time which he doesn't have to serve because of his great service to the country, Marion Jones lies under oath about steroids and is in jail right now leaving her kids including a child under 1 w/o their mom for 6months to serve her sentence. Where is the justice.
I saw that Lou Dobbs, enemy of people who are here without green cards, have his temper tantrum about Obama. None of the three candidates are talking about rounding up all of these people and shipping them out. Hillary and Obama have similar policies on immigration, which I think don't go far enough in helping those who were forced to come here through circumstances beyond their control in their own countries.
-
Susie,
I agree, it seemed Obama was talking off the cuff and not from notes, and made an enemy. He also used Rush's name so I'm sure he's burning the air waves too over this.
Meanwhile the congress might have a plan that they'll be voting on soon (if they have the votes) so hopefully this won't be an issue for anyone's Presidency.
-
To answer your question, Amy, yes I think Clinton should have been able to have sex while in office WITH HIS WIFE. Perhaps vows are not important to you.
I still think politicians, men and women, should not be hanky pankying around while married. I know this will NEVER happen.
Spitzer looks like he could be a bunch of trouble. Sad for his family.
And, Amy, I do not think that Marion Jones should have gone to prison. She's not a threat to society. That is one thing you and I wholly agree on.
Shirley
-
Lou Dobb's doesn't care weather you are republican or democrat---He
just rails against stupidity where-ever he finds it.
I'm sure dollars to donuts he rails against the FAA and Southwest tonight---There
was some collusion with certain members of the FDA and a wink wink that allowed Southwest to go on without the mandated safety checks.
The audacity of it.
I don't agree with Lou on everything.
He's not thrilled with the Grumman deal either---but nor does he mention that there were serious problems with Boeing as the only other bidder and recent major corruption that sent people to jail --no small problem. The work will be done in Alabama but the jobs will be non union.
However you feel about Lou's views twas not a swift move to alienate someone who has such a very loyal following among independents.
-
With all the women on the podium standing by their man in the past few years--Gotta say I've never seen a look on any of their faces like the look on Mrs Spitzer's face.---How awful for her.
-
I still can't get over the arrogance of the ex-governor. Apparently Spitzer helped determining some of the red flags that were raised in his case. He knew they might be looking for them and still he did it.
I mean the guy was an ego-maniac. A few years back while still an anttorney general he did not like his radio interview with Sean Hannity, so he called back off the air and told the producer that he would bring his AG power against him.
Or how hard the mighty fall.
-
Vows mean something to me, Shirley. I just don't think it's my business what individuals choose to do in their marriage and I know that marriages can be quite complicated as can the reasons for cheating. We don't know what goes on in the marriages of those in the public, what kind of agreements and/or concessions people make behind closed doors etc.
-
Geraldine Ferraro?
I'm saddened by her remarks. I looked up to her so much, she was the first VP (or presidential) candidate that I heard speak. Having a woman on the ticket meant so much to me at the time. She just doesn't get it. Being added to Mondale's ticket at the convention is different than Obama campaigning in all 50 states to earn his lead in delegates, states and popular vote. Her explanation just made things worse for her.
Andrea Mitchell reminded viewers that Geraldine is as very sick woman (she's been battling leukemia for a decade) and suggested this might be some of the reason for her demeanor, which I think is a bit insulting. I didn't want to be treated as or looked at differently because of cancer.
-
I'm still wondering how Spitzer got caught? Why was the FBI listening in to him in the first place? A few credit card transactions of moving money around shouldn't have alerted them. It was not like he was moving loads of money that could have alerted them. I'm more concerned now with the govt having too much power to watch us a little too closely. Somebody must have ratted him out.
-
Not Leukemia Amy--She has Multiple Myeloma and fortunately she was one of the early people to be put on Thalidomide with success.--one of the first cancers it was approved for use in.
-
Rosemary--from what I gather on the news--bank transactions of any unusual variety are automatically flagged by banks and reported to FBI for people of political importance. That's what probably started the whole business.
Apparently, we all have a rating as to our
risk of illegal transactions depending on such things as our positions, when we arrived in the country--who knows what.------Spitzer of all people would have been aware of this.
-
Susie,
He's a rich man. Moving a few thousand bucks here and there shouldn't have flagged them to watch his transactions. Unless he was cheap and then you see the big bucks being spent here and there. That might have alerted them, but why now? He got away with it for so many years, then bam, they got him now. I might be reading too much into this.
Mrs. Spitzer had all my support the first time at the podium. I figured she was shell-shocked. Not the second time. I might have been in the room while he resigned but that standing at his side routine with that "look" is getting old, now I'm giving her an Emmy.
-
A few words from the infamous.....what's your thought...my thought...sickening...racist. "Audacity of Hope" came from a sermon of Jeremiah Wright's.
Courtesy of MSNBC:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS_7S3hkWV0
Courtesy of Fox News:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS_7S3hkWV0
Wright speaks about "poor" Obama. Obama owns a house that cost, I believe, around $1,000,000 (did I put enough zeroes in there?).
Obama was sent to private schools when he lived with him mother and stepfather. One was Catholic and one was Muslim.
He went to the best universities. How can Wright say Obama is not privileged?
He's "preaching" from the pulpit about how we were lied to by the Government about the war. Worse yet, he says the government is importing drugs and gives them to the poor. I believe he says the government invented HIV to poison America..something like that.
He better watch out for the IRS!
Obama needs to leave this church NOW. He needs to totally disassociate himself from this racist, radical church.
-
Shirley,
I was pretty much blown away by this guy from the little I saw today. Obama's been going to that church for 20 years, and now he'll disavow him? I'd say it's a tad too late if this has been going on for years. I heard that Wright is listed as one of his advisors to his campaign.
Hannity and Colmes is doing a show on this guy Friday night on Fox. I'd like to get the full picture of what Obama's been listening to for all these years and didn't walk away from.
-
Amy, I think Geraldine Ferraro's comments were unfortunate, but I do think think she gets it; the problem is that she's just not allowed to say it. I don't think she's in any way racist; I think she was commenting on something that she's observed during this campaign. She's trying to bring into the discussion a very contentious and very sensitive issue. From my understanding of her statements, she sees two factors at play.
First is that Barack Obama is an appealing, viable candidate. He is highly intelligent, highly educated, an inspiring speaker. He is appealing to a wide range of voters, black and white, young and old, men and women. And by virtue of his being African American, he has provided voters with the opportunity to show that race doesn't matter. Voters have been waiting a long time for this chance to prove that racism in America is history. And so voters have come out to see Obama, they have been inspired, they have voted for him. But in their excitement what they haven't done is check his credentials, and those, unfortunately, are a bit weak. Yes, he has tremendous potential, but it's future potential. I think Geraldine Ferraro's point is that no other 2 year Senator, no matter how exciting or inspiring, would have made it this far, certainly not without much more scrutiny.
The second point is an even more sensitive one, but one that the media is slowly and very cautiously starting to discuss. In the last few primaries, the racial divide has been getting stronger. As Ferraro pointed out in one of her statements, approx. 90% of African American voters have cast their ballot for Obama in the last few primaries. That's an overwhelming number and that suggests that some people may be voting based on race rather than on credentials or political stance. In fact, the exit polls have shown this to be true. The Fox News exit poll shows that 30% of voters in Mississippi said that race was a factor in their vote; of those voters, 62% said that they voted for Obama. (On the other hand, gender was an important factor to 28% of the voters; of those, 68% voted for Obama. Hmmm......)
Those are her points. They are valid. She is not saying, as some in the media have laughingly suggested, that black men in America have it easy. She is saying that Obama uniquely fills a long unfulfilled need (or perhaps a desire?) and part of his success is due to that.
