I just started taking these. I noticed they are cholesterol free, but then wondered...since they contain actual "fish parts" do I need to worry about mercury?

Sorry if this is a naive question, but I've never taken any medication/supplements regularly, beyond a basic multi-vitamin.

    Lori,

Fish oil is not exactly cholesterol free.  They did research and found that taking high doses can up our LDL cholesterol.  From what has been written about them, they use small fish that haven't picked up the pollutants in the water yet, so they're said to be safe.  Consumer labs rates some of the different manufacturers for safety and other things.  I hope this helps.

    Lori ~

Fish oil does not have mercury...( stripping ) and lots of Omega 3 and a natural inflammatory.

My Dr. said I could take up to 3 a day.... ( I only take one so far )  Although, its recommended we eat fish twice a week,  I don't eat it as much as I should so I take the supplement.

I read that 1000 mg w/EPA and DHA is recommended for a healthy heart.

    It couldn't hurt :)

Thanks for getting back to me! I love fish, but I'm sure I don't eat enough, so I take one (1200 mg pill) a day. My supplement does say it contains no cholesterol, but since it's probably not regulated who knows? I guess I'll find out how my levels are at my next check-up.

I could eat fish almost daily, but I figure all the world's pollutants end up in the water one way or the other.....

That makes sense about the size of the fish though.

I'm just getting to the point where I think that for every benefit there is to a supplement I take, there's also a drawback. So...maybe I should just save my money. LOL

Until they try to take fish oil away from us with some amazing research that really tells us nothing, I'd take the oil.  It's heart healthy, it's good to take with vitamin D.  Eating fish is said to be better but there you know you'll be getting mercury.  So how is that better?  I still eat the fish too.
