Spinning dvd

I will re-retire from the school that I have worked for this coming May, and when I do, I won't be getting the exercise that I do now. (Stair climbing, running back and forth between campuses) Can someone tell me of a dvd that would be good for a stationary bike---beginner preferably? I have one, but just hate it because it is so b-o-r-i-n-g! Thinking that one of these would keep me motivated, and maybe a little ---ummm---lighter?
Thanks!

You should try a spinning class. It is night & day different from a stationary bike - which in my opinion is only good as a clothes hanger.

Check out CollageVideo.com. Do a search on "Spinning," and you'll get 4 hits. The site offers both a video preview and customer reviews. I frequently use Collage to check out new DVDs (then I go buy them at Amazon
).
Spinning is tough, but you can adjust the workout to your level by simply not pushing beyond your limit. You'll progress in no time. It's also a lot more fun than just logging in time on your bike at the same speed for 30 or so minutes.

I totally agree with the previous two posts. Spinning is the best (and toughest) workout I've ever done (I'm almost 52). I've been doing two classes a week for about a year and a half. It did take me a while to work my way up to being able to do everything. Give it try, go at your own pace, and hopefully you will learn to enjoy it as much I have.

Thanks, everyone, for your answers. Dansmom--no gym near me. So, back to the "clothes hanger". Wish there was a gym nearby....I need the structure.
I will check out CollageVideo, and see what's there.

Does anyone have advice about getting back into working out while you're having treatment? I am still sore from the lumpectomy & nodes coming out - hard to stretch my arm. Yoga helped one day, today I think it may have not been the thing to do. I'm scared to go back into the gym! It's only been 3 weeks I guess, but .... chemo & rads are coming & I want to be ready!
-
I'm interested in hearing about others' experiences with this too. I have a tendency to jump back into things too early.
I would guess gentle walking (as opposed to power walking) would be a good starting point.

I walked on the treadmill today- did a routine that I used to jog with and just walked. I felt better afterwards, but it's frustrating to feel so sluggish. A friend said I need to find a "new normal" - not sure I want this to be normal!

Dansmom....I teach aerobics (in Chapel Hill, mind you!) and was able to just barely drag myself to classes throughout treatment. I, too, trudged on my treadmill every morning but now, looking back, I know I wasn't exactly doing anything even close to jogging, never mind running! But at least I was moving and doing that on a regular basis helped me to feel as "normal" as possible. I also started taking yoga at Cornucopia House and it was awesome since it's restorative and specifically designed for those of us who ahve or have had cancer and cancer treatments. You may want to look into those: http://www.cornucopiahouse.org/
And btw, Dansmom, if you're being treated at UNC, you might also want to check out the free massage available in the basement of the Gravely Building on Wednesdays. The masseuse, Kelly, is awesome! I even started going to him privately after my treatments until he retired. He still does the hospital ones though.

Thanks, Marin - I went to Gravely today for the look good, feel better thing - didn't get tremendous amounts out of it but it was nice to be around other folks going through this. Glad to see that nobody there had lost eyebrows yet! I did think I'd try out the massage & a good friend of mine used to work at Cornacopia house and she gave me a pep talk about it last week! small world. I tried to jog today, but it felt like I didn't have enough support for my breast so I just walked and then when I got home I needed a nap. I haven't even started the chemo yet! where do you teach?
