    Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with DCIS back in March and since then I have undergone a mastectomy with a tissue expander and recently had my implant put in.  I chose the silicone gel (Mentor).  The next step is the nipple/aerola and maybe breast lift.  I am undecided about going through another operation and would appreciate your comments and experiences with deciding to have this next procedure or not having it at all.

    thank you.

Hi Joyce, there is a thread going now on the Reconstruction board regarding whether or  not to get the nipples done. You might want to check it out and see the opinions that have already been posted. I had a bi-lat mast June 07 and had my nipples created in December, and will get my tattoos the end of this month.

My plastic surgeon told me that the nipple reconstruction could be done under local . I had bi lateral mast. 2005 w/expanders  reconstruction the end of the same year . Hyster in 2006.

Still have not made the decision on the nipple reconstruction either for the same reason not sure I want another surgery.

There are several types mine was going to take grafts from inner thighs for aerola.  OUCH!!   that did not sound to pleasent to me.

    Good Luck with your decision.

    Hugs

I had my bilateral mastectomy in September of 2006 with immediate reconstruction.  I'm waiting for my nipple reconstruction, as my plastic surgeon is going through cancer treatments herself.  She actually tattoos the skin first, creates the nipple and it's an outpatient, local anesthesia deal.  I am going to do it, I just don't know when, but my surgeon suggested that many women just don't feel like the picture is complete until this is done.  It's not for everyone, I understand that.  I would check out what your surgeon's "technique" is.

Hi all.. I had bilateral with immediate reconstruction..  replacement 10/07 all finished last year..  I was suppose to have a purse string closure (where they gather the remaining skin where the areola use to be and stitch into a circle) and then the groin graft to replace the areola and the nipple created by the breast skin.  He (ps) changed plans and didn't do the purse string closure and so the attempt to help hide the scar around the areola was in vain - by the way he changed those plans AFTER I was asleep!  I wouldn't have had the groin graft if I knew he was going to change plans.  Two more incisions to worry about in a place where there is a much better chance of an infection.  I would have had the nipple recreated and then do the tatooing for the areola.  As a matter of fact I will be doing the tatooing anyway as the results are not exactly equal between the two breasts, bit off from one side to the other (not bad mind you but still).  So if I am going to do tatooing after the graft anyway I would have (if I could go back) nipple recreated and ONLY the tatooing of the areola.

What ever you decide - I hope everything works our really well!!

    Best

    Marian
