Its okay my BF is doing okay just in a lot of pain.  He had to put off his surgery to wait at least 3 wks until I was post op from my exchange surgery since he has one arm down and I really can't do any lifting I guess you would say we both are in good shape right now.  He was taking care of me now it is my turn to take care of him.

Well, I have been searching for info on foobs and temp and have found some things. Many sites do mention that implants are effected by room temperature, but most claim this to be a draw back of saline and not silicone though. Go figure. . .

I guess the best info I found comes from a chat site like us! These women all complain of coldness in their breasts.

    http://messageboards.makemeheal.com/viewtopic.php?t=8644&highlight=chills

Other comments (take a look at what this guy says about heat applied to implants):

    "Richard V. Dowden, M.D., C.M., F.A.C.S.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about breast enlargement:
Do breasts with implants feel hot or cold?
They can feel either hot or cold depending. The implants store heat or cold, changing slowly. Rather similar to how other body parts behave, implants tend to be at a temperature somewhere between body temperature and the temperature of the surroundings, and change slowly when your surroundings change. For example, spend an hour in a pool or a cool room wearing a bikini, and your breast implants will cool below body temperature, so the breasts will feel cool to the touch, and will stay cool until they gradually warm up. Or spend an hour lying in the sun, or in a hot tub, and the implants will warm up above body temperature, and your breasts will feel warm to the touch, and will stay that way until the heat source is gone and time has passed.

For example, here are some typical comments women with implants make: "I take a long hot bath before I go walking outside in the winter - the implants store heat and help keep me warm for a while outdoors." "I notice that after a long session of swimming or diving in cold water, my breasts feel cool for a while even after I get out into the sun."

Heat will not harm the implant. But it is important to emphasize a warning here about your breast skin. Hot tubs, jacuzzis, saunas, tanning booths, electric blankets, or sunbathing will not harm either the implant or the breast in any way. But, if you put a localized source of high heat directly on the breast, like a hot water bottle or heating pad, the implant will gradually warm up, and your breast skin will then be getting heat from both outside and inside - and you can burn the breast skin. In 22 years, I have seen four women to whom this happened, with permanent scars each time. So, no hotwater bottles, and no heating pads on the breast."

    Another site:
    "Saline Implants
Women with saline breast implants sometimes complain that the salt water implant doesn't warm up the way a natural breast does, so their breasts feel cool rather than warm. The implants can get unpleasantly cold in very cold weather, according to women who like ice-skating and similar sports. Women with saline implants also complain that the implants may make a swooshing water noise that makes them feel self-conscious. This doesn't change over time, but you may get used to it."

I am ROFL at this conversation.....what a hoot (or was that hooters???)...LOL.  Anyhoot, I have one recon and one augmented with silicone cohesive gels.  I have to say sometimes (NOT all the time) my foob is noticeably cooler to the touch than the real boob BUT I don't notice the coolness unless I touch it.  It doesn't radiate cold or make me cold.

Also on the subject of underwires.....I had to wear one from my post-op appointment for 2 weeks 24/7 because of my lifted side and setting the crease.  I continue to wear one just because I like them....weird, I know!!!  I do have a few wireless bras now (unheard of before my surgery because I liked the lift that the underwires gave) and I can also go braless but prefer to wear one to work...just dont' want to have to worry about 'northern exposure'.

    Best wishes!

P.S. I think the important thing to remember about underwires is that they have to fit properly (and most people don't do this...).  The wires have to lay against your body NOT crimp your breast.

    Hi Ladies,

I felt my tissue expanders and they are very warm to the touch, but on the inside I am always cold in my puffy chest and turning the heat up in the house. I have not heard of not wearing an underwire bra but my PS told me that if I was ever to have a tooth filled that I would have to go on antibiotics before having the work done on my teeth just like a person that has had a hip replacement, so I don't get infection at the implant site. Anyone else been told this?

We all need a good laugh some days, otherwise we would just cry with all that has happened to each of us, so no apology is necessary for any comments. I feel so much better with a surgery date in my mind. GP gave me a script for Ativan and told me that I could take up to 3 Flexeril a day if needed. I will be asleep at the wheel if I take all those drugs, but I can usually take a lot of meds and still walk and talk. Just my metabolism. I have also seen many mastectomies and all of the different kinds of reconstruction surgeries. Even though I had had this experience it was still very hard for me to get my head around this whole idea of it happening to me. So I cannot even imagine what it was like for someone to go through this without that. If that makes any sense.

I love bras, so when the exchange is done I will have to get myself to Port Huron,Mich and get one of the Victoria's Ipex bras once I figure out my new or old size, I hope. Still wearing the tank tops under my shirts or tops just to keep me warm and to keep the puffy chest from rubbing on the tops. All my bras are way too small, busting out of them. Had to go through this to get" busting out of my bra".Seems ironic to me.

Thanks Hanna for that comment.  I have been through 9 surgeries with him already.  6 of them on the same arm of course not the arm done this time, but out of those 6 he ended up with infections and had to give him his meds through a pic line and a central line as well.  He has kept me very busy over the years.  Of course while I am going through everything for the cancer he has to go and get hurt again.  I guess he doesn't like me being the center of attention lol

    Hi Ladies,

Well I can tell you that mine have always been cold since the Bi-laterial. I was expanded to 400cc's with the saline then the ps put 350 Mentors that are silcone gel. I am still a small B cup. As for underwire bra's, some ps tell women to wear them some don't. Mine said not underwire's for at least 6 months because he had to create that fold under my boobs ( I forgot the technical term for it, but it still hurts) I have to tell you all that it has been 3 weeks from my surgery, and I'm still pretty sore. Like I said before, it's not so much the incisions from the implants, but that inframmary fold (I just remembered the technical term) that he created hurts the most. For the women that are going into surgery, ask your ps if he is doing this to you. Personally if I knew he was doing this I would has asked why??? What they do is create a pocket for your implant to sit in. Since I was so small chested, my ps made a cut under the entire length of my breast and tucked and folded the skin, then they stitch it from the inside. Now I can see why they do this, it's so you have a natural appearance from the front view of the breasts, but I never had this to start off with. It's kind of like a natural shelf. Anyways, check to see if your dr. does this. If they do, then you can't wear any underwires because they will dig into the scar healing line. If you want more info on this just google "what is inframmary fold line of breast" and it will show you a picture.

Anyways, good luck to all, have a great weekend.

Kerry, How close are you to Port Huron???? I have a job site that I visit in Port Huron. Do you know where the Art Van Furniture Store is??? I plant all the flowers at all the stores in Michigan at the end of May. Small world. (Blue Water Bridge.....Casino....)

    Hi Ladies,

Sharon, I am a true cross border shopper. We used to go down for the day and have dinner at Port Huron and then come home. A very easy drive for me. Was just over at the mall in the fall with 2 other girlfriends and had a blast, shop till you drop, that is our motto. My girlfriends had to drag me out of the mall to leave to come home, we were just finding too many good deals. Had a ton of stuff for 1/3 the price as here. It was a blast. I think that I know where the Art Van store is. That is too funny. We are having the same nice wintery weather that you are having. Looking sooo forward to spring.

    Hi Ladies,

I have the control boob!!! Left is silicone and very cold, the right one I was born with and it's warm, warm, warm. I can feel the coldness of lefty through my clothes. My granddaughter thinks it's funny that now I have a "squishy cold boobie". Jani, I love the witches tittie saying but my mom always added after the fact "in a brass bra". It's become my new favorite saying these days!

Of course I'll be happy to be the therapist...it's a $25 co-pay for all advise, wanted or not!!! You ladies are my saving grace. The therapist was great. While we were talking about my job (teaching sociology) I told her I was a psychology major and 2 semesters before graduation I switched to sociology because it made more sense to me, she chimed in and said she was a sociology major that switched to psychology. Small world and I think that's why we clicked.

I started the Zoloft yesterday and boy did I forget about one of the side effects (to put it nicely...gastorintestinal distress). I spent more time in the bathroom and if I have to wipe my bottom one more time I'll scream! Sorry...TMI! Of course the other side effect is I sleep even less than normal (3 hours last night) which means more Internet/HSN shopping for me!!! The doc gave me Ambien to take for that but from what I've read about those side effects, I'm reluctant to have it filled...I don't think I want to sleep-drive, sleep-eat, or have sleep-sex!

Well, my youngest is leaving the nest (again!) today and we're helping him pack and move the rest of the weekend. I'll check back with yall next week to see how the frozen boobies are doing!

    Yall have a great weekend!

Don't we as women get to have all the fun? We are the stronger sex for sure. First adolesence, then periods, then pregnancy, then labour and childbirth, then PMS, then menopause and bc to boot and now cold foobies.Life is just too much FUN at times isn't it.

I also had the inframmary fold line done but my PS did not cut me to make it.  The only cuts are the original mastectomy cuts.

Well, here's a new one for you--anyone out there get "boob-freeze"?? Like brain freeze, only to the boobs?

Whenver I eat or drink something really cold, I feel it in my boobs as it goes down my esophagus. It was more noticable right after the expanders were placed, but it still happens!

Anne, I had it with my expander.....weird feeling....it felt like the drink was running down behind the expander.  I must say (if I ever felt it with my implants, and I'm not sure I have), it hasn't been for a very long time.  But I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!  Best wishes

A question for those who chose expanders...will you have more sensation on your breasts that those who choose the TRAM or DIEP?

Nancy, Although it depends on the woman and how much skin is spared during the mast, my PS told me that she finds that the expander/implant women have more sensation than her TRAM patients.  Best wishes!

Hi! How is everyone? I hope fine.  Nothing new here, just getting tired of expanding and ready for the exchange.  I think I'm going to call and try to get my exchange moved up sooner.  I just want my mind off of this before I lose it.  Went shopping with daughter #1 who is going on a trip for spring break.  Life has changed so much in the past year.  I wish I was flying away with her - I'd fly away anywhere. Be good girls!

    Hanna,

Hang in there! I thought that I was going to lose it last week. Had physio booked last Thursday and she really helped to stretch the pec muscles and also I am at 5 weeks post op and some of the post op swelling has gone down I'm sure, but also felt like the expanders were lifting off of the ribs. I'm sure that it is also due to the fact that I am done with the fills and have had some recovery time, as I think that my PS was filling me too fast too soon. When is your exchange booked for? When I first heard that I would have to wait 2 months for the exchange I thought that I would never make it, it is very hard. I hope that drugs will help!!!

UTI = Urininary Infection. I am now on my third antibiotic. If this doesn't work they will cancel my surgery this Wednesday.

There is a big diffference between saline and silicone. With the silicone you need to be watched for 10 years and have yearly or biyearly MRIs to check for leaks. They cannot be seen that's why they are referred to as "Silent Leaks". Whereas when the saline leaks, you just go flat. Also if they leak there is not issues.

A MRI cannot be used on a lot of women (any internal device, some tattoos)  I am one of those women - I have a pacemaker. There is no way my PS, or any person in the medical profession, coudl find on of these leaks wihtout the benefit of an MRI...unless they cut me open.

    Annie

I had the boob freeze also. When I mentioned it to PS I just got that "look". Those men never understand us. It felt like the water was flowing outside of my stomach...scared the heck outof me.

AnneW, I can feel hot or cold drinks going down behind my expanders.  I think it's the strangest thing.  I guess it's something that happens once so much breast tissue has been removed. Who knew?

    Hello Ladies,

I can relate to the boob-freeze thing, it used to drive me crazy!!! When I would tell my dh or ps about it, they too would get that "man look". They just don't get it!!!

Kind of like today, no one but you ladies would really understand my mood today. I start out the day, determined to get a half way deceint bra, since the one I have been wearing is cutting into me under my so-called new boobs. So I figure I'll just go to Wally World and buy something cheap, just until I get to a real store. I take several bra's with different sizes into the fitting room, and nothing looks right or fits right. Before bc I was an A, the bra's today were mostly A's some B's but nothing looks right!!!!! I mean how can you really buy a bra with no nipples. The ps says to get something with support but with no underwires...yea right. I finally take a good look in those wonderful mirrors and had a break down in the Wally World fitting room!!!! After about 10 minutes I compose myself as much as possible, leave all the other groceries in the basket, and cry all the way home. I know what I'm feeling is stupid, but I think today is just one of those days. Most of the time I'm upbeat and positive, but today I just feel angry...the why me? mode. I mean why us, ladies, why us? And where is all that research money going, and to who???? I'm sorry, I hear the stupidest research studies. The last one I heard on CNN stated that bright lights at night may cause breast cancer!!! Who the heck approved that study, and with what funds!!!!!! I guess we should have all stayed at home in the evenings and not drive at night and just miss half our lives!!!! I'm sorry, I'm just frustrated today, tired of the ugly scars and no tit's to top them off, tired of the 10 lbs. that I gained due to restrictions on my life for the last 6 months, tried of wanting a cigarette and knowing I shouldn't smoke, tired of being tired! I'll write later, ladies, thanks for letting me vent.

    Sharon,

I had the exact same scene the other day!  I went to Wally world and to Kohls the next day....carrying in at the very least 50 bras, in every size, shape, underwire, soft cut molded cup etc.  NOTHING fit!  I don't know WHAT size I am!?  C cup doesn't fit well, B cup doesn't fit well either.  I left sobbing from both places and feel like a freak at this point.  Tired of the scars and the PS who shrugged off me crying becasue I am not the size HE promised me I would be.  HE acted like I was expecting too much!  I bought a bra that fit perfectly THE day we decided on my size...then went on for the over fill.  I swim in that bra now.  HE shrugs.

I am tired of the whole thing too.  I am sleeping well now though.  That is one good thing, right?  But big hugs to you....I am feeling the same way.  AND wanting to exercise.  I have 3 more weeks until I can even get on the elliptical!  Sigh.....will we ever feel "normal" agai? Whatever normal is anyway.  I haven't noticed yet any coldness from the gel implants.  I stay cold anyway.  Next is nipple reconstruction and deciding on tatoos or skin graft.?  Any thoughts?

Dr was of NO Help at all.  Again...the shrug.  Whatever YOU want.  no difference he says.....

    back to work.  Teri.

    Hi Ladies,

After I had my child and breastfed her my "old" shape changed so I had to get professionally measured with a bra on twice at 2 different stores to find a proper fit for a "new me" bra. Things had changed. My band size now is 33 3/4" ,so I have no idea how I ever fit into a 38B.After the exchange I will have to be measured again, but it sounds like this will be another challenge to find the proper fit and feel bra. It was a challenge before  BC. More FUN!!!Hang in there.

I guess hang in there must be the 3 words for this weekend.  I'm trying....but crying too for some reason.  I'm still in the cami phase - no bras would work yet so I won't even try or I'd fall in a puddle on the floor of a dressing room.  This is unlike me.  I am usually optimistic.  Not this weekend however. Maybe it's the moon.

Or maybe it's a Home Depot weekend.  Sharon, all your talk about flowers is making me crave a garden!  I so believe getting into the dirt revitalizes me. The smell of earth and planting.  Flowers to me are just these trusting, happy little faces! SmileLaughingSmile  I need some happy flowers right about now.  Here's a rose Kiss  Here's a peace lily Innocent

Maybe I'll go to the HD and see what's up. Plus, there's a toilet needs fixing and I'm the handyman around here!

Later Buds!  (did ya'll get the pun!)

    Hanna,

Remember the Professional Green Thumb Rule: Don't buy the stock yet, it's just a waste of money. But HD and all those other people want you to think this is the time of year.....then you, the consumer, purchase the wonderful looking plants, that by the way have been grown in commerical greenhouses in an controled environment, to look just perfect and tempting. LOOK the other way...at least for a few more weeks and the hard frosts for your zone is not a threat. Rule of thumb is once the forthesithia's are in bloom, the ground temp. is okay for hard stock. (forthesiathia's are those twigs with yellow blooms on them)

See, now Margaret can be the shrink on the posts, and I'll be your Professional Landscape Consultant. I guess designing over a 1000 gardens and homes over the last 10 years will finally get put to good use!!!!

P.S. Thanks for the advice on taking the underwire's out of the bra's maybe that will work for now on my old bra's.

I am sorry to hear about your UTI.  I am crossing my fingers that the infection goes away ASAP.  Drink alot of cranberry juice:<}.

As for the silicone -vs- saline, the maintness is the same.  My ps told me that when they leak....one will know!!!!  I am getting the silicone and I am in a study where they want to fallow up on me.... but I dont have to have a MRI every year or every two years.  Only if I have blunt trama to my implants or I think something is wrong.  All implants dont last forever, no matter what they are made of.   But my ps told me if its NOT broken DONT fix it:<}.  My friends going on 20 yrs with her silicone and they are STILL BEAUTIFUL:<}.

I too start dreaming of my garden at this time of the year. I love looking at the catalogues and reading the gardeners mags, even though I know it is waaaay too early! But I find that dreaming and planning are almost as fun as actually doing it, so dream away Hanna. I have some good landscape questions for you Sharon!

Hah, I absolutely love it when the answer to my question is so absurdly obvious, but it takes someone else to state it for it to even be in the realm of considerations! I had asked why not underwires because I have all these beautiful bras with underwires! It had not occurred to me to just take the wires out! Who needs ‘em? Not me! I tried one today and it is still very comfy, and I get the warmth, and the cover up (I still have areolas and active nips) without the extra support and the pressure marks that the wires give. Thanks Hanna and Sharon, you are both so clever!

About the silicone vs. saline. It just has to be a personal decision based on your own comfort level. I did read the research on the hypothesized health hazards of silicone implants, as I am sure we all have, and I for one am very comfortable with the conclusion that these implants will not harm my health now or in the future. I do not believe that an annual MRI is required, but given that MRIs pose no risk, I will probably go for it. The thing is though, I would never want a person who felt uncomfortable with the idea of silicone in their bodies to go ahead with these implants. To constantly have the worry about something bad happening to you, watching and waiting day-by-day, month-by-month, year-by-year (like knowing you are high risk for bc and waiting for it to happen) is just not worth it. If you are not comfortable with the conclusions of the research then please do not let anyone talk you into going with the silicone. Go with the saline instead and be worry free and happy with your choice. If silicone is your choice, then enjoy the benefits they provide.
