Ok isnt there a view that since the estrogen in soy is low it actually is good for you since it ties up the receptors and makes them unavailable for the real chabang ?
Or am I clueless... as usual..
I think I am informed enough to be dangerous to myself and others.

I just recently found out that eating unfermented soy keeps us from absorbing iodine. Another good reason not to eat it. From what I've been reading, Oprah is a big endorser of eating soy and its milk and she announced recently she has thyroid problems. This isn't surprising to the nutritionists out there.

soy on a regular or increased basis is a NO.

my naturopath told me fermented soy (as in miso) is okay, the rest is not.
makes it kind of hard for those of us who want to avoid dairy as well, but luckily there's rice milk, and almond milk (though it's too sweet, more like pudding), and hemp milk. And goat & sheep cheese when desperate I suppose.
But if one's being really on top of it about soy - it's in SO many packaged foods, whole foods seem to be the main way to go.....and I don't cook! Sigh....

My onc said stay away from soy in general but not to sweat is over small/occasional soy consumption. I eat a little miso and soy sauce- couple x a month maybe- that's it. Prior to May 2007 when I was dx with locally advanced bc I was the "soy queen" I probably had soy at almost every meal- soy milk, burgers, energy bars, tofu, Kashi products, etc. I thought it was good for me. I also have longstanding thyroid disease. Obviously this is N=1 and correlational but it does not seem to me that soy did me much good although can't know of course if it caused the bc or thyroid issues.

I ate a lot of soy, too, prior to my dx. Most of it was processed, though, and that may make a difference. I also took genistein supplements for a year or so. I'm thinking that soy didn't help me out much, but I have no proof of it, of course.

I was drinking soy milk every morning and eating edamame a couple of times a month before my dx. I thought it was good for me too...I actually love regular skim milk so I've gone back to that. Now I avoid it (I mean soy). I've heard mixed things about whether it is bad for us or not but I figure why take a chance? I was 93% er+. Interesting about the possible thyroid connection...
