My recipe is:  1/2 beet, carrots, celery, collard greens, fresh ginger, white button mushrooms,  and an apple without the seeds.  Have fun.

You will have so much fun!

I do shop at Whole Foods, although the Pavillions (von's) in my area has some organics, as well as Trader Joe's, so I go there as well.

This morning I used carrots, bok choy, broccoli,  red chard, celery, an apple and a sliver of ginger.  I often use spinach and radishes, and I've found that if I put in a couple of carrots or an apple, everything tastes good.

I haven't found the veggie prices to be too bad, considering how much a carton of fresh juice costs. They certainly take up a lot of room in my refrigerator, however!

Rosemary- I never thought to juice button mushrooms. Do they give much juice?

At my local Whole Foods, spinach, broccoli,  celery, carrots and apples are fairly reasonable. As long as you don't need the organic peppers or cucumbers, they aren't that far off the non-organic prices.

    Sandilee,

I get a lot of juice from mushrooms.  We should use 3 1/2 ounces of them.  When I take the plunger out after juicing something for a few seconds you'll see even more juice come out of the machine.  I guess the air helps it.

If your going to juice every day or every other day, we should pay attention to the vegetables we use.  These are considered to be goitrogens and will keep us from absorbing iodine and that might eventually lead to thyroid problems....if they are used excessively.

Examples of foods that contain goitrogens
    Cruciferous vegetables including:
    • Broccoli
    • Brussel sprouts
    • Cabbage
    • Cauliflower
    • Kale
    • Kohlrabi
    • Mustard
    • Rutabaga
    • Turnips

    Millet

    Peaches

    Peanuts

    Radishes

Soybean and soy products, including tofu

    Spinach

    Strawberries

    Dear Tri,

Here's mine and my mom's recipie and the easiest way to prepare.

    3 organic carrots

    2 small organic apples

    2 large stalks organic celery

large handful of organic RED grapes

    2 organic oranges

1 organic beet tops and all

    1" piece of organic ginger

Preparation:  Retrieve all said beautiful colors from fridge and put in large colander for rinsing.  Sing "Oh what a beautiful morning" as you are cleaning these life-giving colorful wonderments of nature.  Put oranges on cutting board and take off most of peeling with a knife.  Cut beet in half (This will take a large knife!  They are tough little buggers).  Cut greens off top of beet.

Put in juicer in this order:

apples (leave them whole if they fit, seeds are good)

    oranges

    celery

    grapes

    carrots

    ginger

    beet root

    beet top

This will make approx. 32oz. of juice.  It is delicious.  You may also add the stalks of broccoli that you have saved, and the bottoms of califlower.  These make lots of juice.  I put my juice in a sealable safe plastic drinking bottle I got at Target.  I carry it around with me and try and consume within an hour or so.  From what I understand, it's important to drink quickly after juicing.  A la Votre Sante'!

We use a vitamix blender instead of a juicer, so we keep all the fiber, but to each their own... What we use:

    Kale

    Spinach

    Cucumber

    Collared Greens

    Banana (makes it quite tasty)

    and a glass of water.

Apple, kale, broccoli, carrot- in sort of equal amounts- I love this combo- our juicer a Samson, Green Bison, gear juicer- leaves a lot of the fiber. The combo makes a beautiful emerald green drink- the sweetness of the apple/carrot cuts the bitter of the broccoli/kale.

I use organic apples and carrots only as these foods are on the "worst 10" list for pesticides- the broccoli and kale I feel okay about using conventional. You can look up the worst 10 list on line and use only organics of those vegs and fruits but save $ buying "conventional" for less risky produce- others on the bad list that come to mind are peaches, strawberries, potatoes, green beans, spinach...I buy only organic varieties of these. I don't imagine you'll be juicing many potatoes but you might want to bake some.

Thanks everyone!  I love hearing about your recipes!

Rosemary, the website that your list came from is great. I put it in my favorites, as there is so much good information there!

I don't know if my household is ready for my singing in the morning, however.  At least not until after my juice. Laughing

    Sandi,

I can't get their web pages to copy over.  I don't even know if they sell a product on that site because I can never get out of the page I'm reading because it's so packed with info. Let's see if this one works:

I often juice Kale, Parsely, Dandelion Greens, 1 lemon, 1 tart apple (it's the lowest in sugar), 1 cucumber, and 2 celery stalks, and ginger (optional).   At other times, I'll juice beets, celery & carrots, but I find that too much sugar at one time.

Natalia Rose who wrote the Raw Detox Food Diet calls her green drink "green lemonade" and it's quite delicious and that is kale, lettuce greens, celery, cucumber, apple. and lemon.

Does anyone know if any of these juice ingredients have any affect on those who take tamoxifen?

Has anyone been juicing for a few months and have notice teeth sensitivity? Read about this, and I notice I don't want cold things.(not even iced,I mean just a little cold)  Also real crunch things.  Anyone else notice this?

I also choose to blend and not juice.  Wanted the fiber to help process the natural carbo's. I also find I can blend about anything as long as I put a apple or red grapes to taste.

    Flalady,

Would you be taking actonel or fosamax?  I started that pill and after awhile I was living in the dentist chair.  They kept telling me my gums look great from the juicing, but my teeth were breaking.  I had to get 3 caps in a row.  Coincidence?  I can't say, but I was very suspicious that actonel was the culprit.

Try a barlett pear instead of apple sometime!  Yummy!

This morning: wad of spinach, several leaves of bok choi, barlett pear, cup of red grapes and 2 carrots.  This could be habit forming!

I keep it really simple and now need my daily fix:

    romaine/celery/beets

sometimes I'll throw in some apple or carrot but rarely.

Reading all your recipes are making me hungry.

    They sound great.

    Thanks

mimi, where do you get your wheatgrass?  I haven't tried it yet but I learned of a place that offers it, so I'll give it a whirl.  I ran some broccoli through my juicer a few weeks ago, mixed with carrots and spinach.  I can handle a drink green from spinach, but broccoli just didn't float my boat.  Yesterday I added some cabbage to my carrot juice and it was ok, but not my favorite.

My sweet tooth is a diehard.  But I do like the tart apples better than the red delicious.  In fact, I need to go get some more.  I received a pineapple last week and I'm planning to run that through the juicer also.  Love my juicer!

    Althea:

Just wondering, what juicer do you own?  I don't want to hijack this thread and get it off track with this question but since you mentioned "Love my juicer" and I'm in the market - thought I'd ask.

Thanks and again - don't want to get you guys off track on the receipes.

I have a champion juicer.  It's probably 20 years old.  I used it a lot when I was first married.  Then it became readily available from the store, so I fell out of the habit.  I am so glad it still works, and it works very well.

For those who juice apples, do you run the seeds through?  Or do you remove them prior to juicing?  I've been using granny smith apples and really like my apple juice these days.  It's the only juice so far that I can manage to drink my superfood mixed in and like it.

Well, gals, I'm part of the "juicing group," now.  I bought the Jack LaLane  one at Costco for $100 -  so am now looking back over all the receipes you guys have mentioned you use but I'm a little confused.  Are there one or two good ones that you could recommend??

At the moment, I have some mushrooms, cucumber, and red/orange peppers - anyway these would work together and would I need to add something for sweetness (like apple, grapes, carrots or beets)?  I guess I'm chicken to experiment but maybe that's the only way?????

I do not juice but blend, and I think the flavors probably work the same.  But I started with some good greens (kyle or spinach) and add a little more fruit that I should have to get use to the flavors.  After awhile I mixed more veggies in and cut back on the fruit.  I found certain fruits can cover a lot of stronger flavored veggies well.  Example:  Sweet apple, pear or bananas or even carrots.  I don't care for peppers so I don't use them.  I do use beets but they are a pretty strong flavor to start with also cucumbers. The more you do the more you can start to guess what the out come will taste like.  I now can just about blend anything and enjoy it.  Do remember to change your formula regularly to capture a lot of different vitamins.

    Thank you Flalady!!

Good suggestions . . .  I imagine, as you mentioned it's sort of a "try and see if you like it" kind of thing but I sure appreciate your ideas.  I'll give them a try.

    Good jucing (oops blending) :):)

    Althea,

The woman doing the demo when I bought my machine took the seeds out of the apple before using it. I asked her why since the machine could handle them. She told me that apple seeds contain a small amount of arsenic.

An answer at last!  Thank you alaina.  I've been putting the seeds through the juicer, but now I'll remove them first.
