The Oscars

I thought they were ok-- nothing spectacular. I loved that a former stripper won for best screen play. Diablo Cody's acceptance speech was great. I also loved that Freeheld won for best short documentary- I remember the story when it was in the news-- so heartbreaking. Laurel Hestor would be so proud at the impact she made.

I couldn't stand Tilda's look with the black toga, no jewelry or seemingly no makeup and the stark red hair that looked like she got out of bed late. I'm not saying that other's may have liked it but to me, the Oscar's are a night of glitz and glamour! And Daniel Day Lewis and his partner? Hello? What were his brown shoes about??
Katherine Heigl looked fantastic and Penelope Cruz was awesome as well!

I so loved La Vie En Rose and think that Marion Cotillard is an amazing actress! Her speech was so obviously heartfelt too! I did feel for Julie Christie though and thought she was fantastic in "Away From Her." And I agree, Amy, about Diablo Cody. I've seen her on several talk shows and each time appreciated her more & more. Very talented, but unassuming.
I really enjoyed the show this year, though nothing particularly dramatic occured. Loved all of the red dresses and the black ones as well, but my favorite was Cameron Diaz's. Last year, my fave was Reese Witherspoon's....I wonder why she didn't attend this year? Also was Brad and Angie absent..? No babysitter maybe?

I can't believe I missed the Oscars last night! Does anyone know if cable will play a rerun? I'm glad you created this thread so I can read about them at least.
-
Hazel, a lot of the oscars are already on you-tube-- do you have on demand cable-- because they might have it.
-
Anybody but me notice that notably absent in the in memoriam section any mention of Roy Scheider--I found that a terrible omission.--Thought he was a terrific actor.
Some of his pictures:
Jaws
The French Connection
All that Jazz
Marathon Man
-
re: Roy Scheider --
he died after Feb. 1, 2008, which I think was the cutoff for this year, so he should be in next year's tribute.. I agree, he was terrific!
-
I wanted Hal Holbrook to win. I liked him a lot.
-
I loved the "old hollywood dresses" this year! The simplicity and beautiful colors was fantastic--especially the women in red. Wow!
I also thought Miley Cyrus was just cute as can be. Did you see her interview with Walters? She is definitely an "old soul." She has it together, and it looks like her mom works hard at keeping her in line! She could surely teach some of the other 18-23 year olds some good value lessons. It was a joy to see a teenager dressed appropriately for her age. She just looked fab in that red dress!

Right! I didn't see: Brad or Angie, Jennifer Anniston or any of the "Friends", Jerry Seinfeld (just the Bee), Vince Vaughn, Jim Carrey or his blonde girlfriend. Julia Roberts was missing. Kevin Costner .... hmm, I guess they weren't invited since they didn't have movies out? Or too busy with new films.
-
I heard one commentator diss Diablo's dress, I actually liked it, thought it was fitting for her and beautiful. Her tattoo was not out of place for her either.
-
i loved la vie en rose, and was pleasantly shocked when marion cotillard won. i don't usually go for subtitles, but this movie was the exception.
i saw a crazy new movie this weekend called be kind, rewind. it was hysterical. -
I want to see some of the movies, will have to wait til they come out on dvd ...
-
The memorial was dated Feb 1, 2007 to Jan 31, 2008 so I guess Roy will be in next years. It seems like they had time to add him in and it would have been more appropriate to have him included rather than wait a year.
I wanted Hal Holbrook to win too and I wanted Cate Blanchette to win for her portrayal of Dylan-- she was scary good in the gender bending role.

Did anybody see the View? The Oscars seemed to have "snubbed" Whoopi when they did montage on the hosts or the great moments of the Oscars. Like the girls on the View brought out: Whoopi was the 1st woman to host; Whoopi was the 2nd black woman to win an Oscar (Hattie was 1st); Whoopi changed her outfits how many times??? She came down from the ceiling dressed like Nicole Kidman, she dressed up like Queen Elizabeth I ...
She got teary eyed on the show and I guess they feel she made someone mad at the Oscars.
-
I read that another host was left out as well. I also read that the key word was :moments", not hosts.
I like Whoopi, and regret she was hurt, but I did read it was not a snub.

roctobermom-
la vie en rose is out on dvd. it's not a sunshine and roses kinda film, so only watch it if u are not feeling particularly emotional at the time. although it was a little depressing, it was my favorite film last year. -
I personally cannot stand Whoopi And it probably was her mouth that got her in trouble. I rank her right up there with Rosie O. I don't know if anyone remembers her last Oscar as host but that is when Robert Redford was put in some hall of fame and as she was announcing his movies she made some rather obvious racist remarks to which the audience did not even respond and she never did another stint as Oscars host after that. I never liked her and liked her less after that.
-
Steve Martin was the other host not pictured ...... You're right, it was "moments" and that was the point the girls were making on the View and then tried to add why Whoopi should have been in the "moments" ... her Queen E outfit, etc. .... I didn't read about her comments. I don't think the host should be negative about anyone in the Academy, it's like host of a party ... all the people are your invited guests and you are there to facilitate and make sure it all goes well.
-
What "racist remarks" are you talking about, Paulette? Can you post a clip or a link or something?
Whether Whoopi is liked or not really isn't even the issue. The fact that she was the first Black woman to ever host the show/was only the second Black female ever to be awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is why she should have been included in the clip. Omitting her, to me, is the same as omitting Hillary Clinton, Shirley Chislom or Geraldine Ferraro - all female firsts - from a montague about presidential hopefuls. She shouldn't have to be well-liked to be treated fairly...
-
Would that Ferraro would now be the one running for the white house!!!! That lady had Guts!
