2758??

How about 78?
-
Oh, now I see it.
There are 49 backpacks on the bus
each pack has 7 cats = 49x7=343 cats
343 cats x 4 legs = 1372
7 girls 14
343 cats x 7 kittens=2401
2401 kittens x 4 legs = 9604
total 13391 legs on one bus, impossible!
-
ok...I have watched the show...I work with numbers all day...this makes my head hurt LOL.
I am NOT smarter than a fifth grader...
-
I am not smarter than a 1st grader but I say
1386
7 girls 7x2=14
7backpacks each for 7 girls 7x7=49
7 cats per back pack with 4 legs each 49x4=196x7=1372+14=1386
Should not matter whether the cats are kittens or big cats ..each girl has 7 back packs with 7 cats ,kittens and big cats have the same amount of legs?
-
I missed that each girl had 7 backpacks. I guess I am not smarter than a fifth grader. Um, how did all those creatures fit on to one bus? It must have been a real furfest!!!
-
Ok, ok, now I really get it. Who says there are any kittens in a backpack? My final answer: 9,604
The rest of the class would be in 6th grade before I can get myself to read correctly.
-
10,990 is the answer. See AnnNYC on the first page for her excellent showing of her work. Lynn had the same answer, but didn't show her work, so she gets a few points taken off.
Whoops, there I go playing the teacher again. Sorry, Sheila!
My dh got it right off the bat. I felt a little foolish. But, hey, he's a scientist!

Actually, Lynn showed her work a few posts below her answer! She approached the problem beginning with the backpacks!

Rosemary, the question reads 'every cat has 7 kittens', try again.
annew, I only check while I am at work so you were the substitute teacher even though you cheated!
AnnNC, I also approached the problem with figuring out how many animals were in each backpack, then total backpacks, total animals, total cat legs, add girl legs to get the answer.
