    Hi everyone!

My husband bought some of this at Target,  I had never even heard of it before!  I surfed the net and found this brand and a lot of info. about it.  For those of us that have a sweet tooth, but know how bad refined sugar is for us, this could be a great subsitute.  http://www.dvo.com/agave-nectar.html  Anyone had any experience with this agave?

I use agave nectar/syrup a lot. It's made by Mahava, just up the road from me here in Colorado. It is less sweet and less think than honey. And it has a lower glycemic value.

On their website, there are recipes for baking with it. I've used agave in the place of sugar for many muffin recipes.

And I use a bit of it in my tea.

A friend of mine (who does not have cancer, just likes to cook healthily) uses agave nectar in all her baking.  i have tasted her goods and I think they taste pretty darn good.  So, I have no clinical experience with it, but it seems to be a good alternative to sugar or artificial sweeteners in baking.

Lisa, we do not have a Super Target here.  The Target we do have has a very small grocery department.  Where would Agave be...around honey, syrup, sugar..?

    thanks

    Shirley,

I am looking for Agave nectar also.  I 'think' I may be able to find it in this little Mexican grocery store near my house, but that isn't doing you any good...

I also 'think' that you might find it in the ethnic/Mexican aisle at the grocery store, but that is only a guess...

Good Luck!  Let me know if you find it!  If not, I'll get it for you at the little Mexican place, and I'll mail it to you!!

I can't find agave in my local Safeway, but at Vitamin Cottage or Whole Foods, it's right next to the honey.

You can also get it on line : http://www.madhavahoney.com/agave.htm

And find recipes on that website, too.

I found it at the local health food store.  It came in light and dark, and I got the light.

I really like it!  So much like honey, but not quite as sweet.

    Thanks Lisa!

p.s.  Anyone try Stevia?  Not bad, and it comes in little packets like sugar or sweet and lo.

Hi, I am new to the forum, just diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. I hear sugar was a no-no for anyone with cancer. But I know Agave Nectar is low glycemic and I wonder if this is ok to eat with breast cancer. I have such a sweet tooth. Anyone know anything about this? Any research on this ?

Is it ok to have Agave with any cancer? I heard no sugars/sweetners of any kind...is this because of the glycemic index or does anyone have any experience with using Agave if you have breast cancer?

I've been using Stevia for several years for sweetening hot drinks but haven't used it much for other cooking because I stopped making and eating most starchy things that call for sugar. I know a there is at least one Stevia cookbook out. The interesting thing is that just that one habit of substituting it for sugar in my daily hot drinks alone helped so much in dealing with my weight even before I stopped making starchy foods.

It comes in small packets, and also in small bottles in liquid form with an eye dropper.

Part of my reason for using it is because it is hard not to gain weight, but the main reason I use it is because I think real sugar is sort of a "fast food" source for cancer.

Harley, I haven't looked for it yet.  I keep forgetting!  Anyway, I'll try to remember to look Monday.

You gals might want to take another look at stevia's supposed safety.  I was just reading this thread and thought I remembered hearing recently that the govt. was kind of warning against stevia use.  So, I did a search and came up with these:

    http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN1841210720070918?feedType=RSS&feedName=healthNews

    http://www.fda.gov/foi/warning_letters/s6500c.htm

I did try stevia a few years ago when I was trying to avoid sugar because of the glycemic index thing, but found it has a funny taste so threw it out.  Never have tried the agave nectar.

Thanks for sharing the links. It is good to know that nothing has been proven yet to be a problem with stevia and that someone is planning to do more conclusive testing to tell whether there are problems with it or not.

I don't know if agave nectar is helpful with the glycemic index or not -- whether it is natural or not. I am trying to avoid anything that acts like sugar does.
