Bleeding lip
Comments

Last night I was eating a peach and blood starting pouring out of my lip. In the beginning it was really gushing. I filled up two paper towels of blood before it finally stopped bleeding an hr later. My lips weren't chapped and I only saw a cut the size of a pin prick after it was all over. Today you can't even tell where the spot was. Do I need to worry about this? I've never bled like this before.

I would worry about it, that sounds really scary, have it checked out maybe you hit a blood vessel in the area. No matter have it looked at. pearl49

I was pretty scared-- I figured if it didn't stop in 2 hrs I'd go to the ER- I'm going to call the dr on monday. Thanks--

Are you taking asprin or any other drug that would cause you to not clot? That is a long time for a very small wound to bleed. Are you having any bruising problems> That is something else to mention to your doc, and I would not let them blow you off...I would insist on having s blood chemistry test done, and maybe a clotting factor test too for good measure. Glad you are calling the doc....

Just a note, but anything about the head ususally bleeds profusely, b/c it's so vascular. I had children (14 at one time) with my child care and if one split a lip whether it needed stitches or not, they bled like they would bleed out! It is scary, but normally nothing to worry about as long as you can get it to stop.
Relax. If you have other areas that bleed like that, then yes, it might be something to worry about. Lips and tongues are easily the worse I think. Just my personal opinion.

I'm not taking anything that would make clotting more difficult. I've had cuts before on various parts of my body and face, never on the lip and have never bleed like this before. It's only been a few months since my last blood panel, which was fun. I'm probably going to call the doc on monday to be sure, but wishiwere, you put my mind at ease.

Amy: The lips and finger are very vascular. So its difficult to get them to stop bleeding when cut. If i were you, I would put my mind at ease.
Still call the doctor on Monday and get some labs drawn though. Alot of things can cause problems with clotting factors. In addition to medications, certain foods can cause problems also. Spinach being one of many.
