    I carry the BRCA1 gene and have gone thru breast cancer at 28 and have finished reconstructive sugery for my breasts.  Now I want to have my ovaries removed but am worried about quality of life at 31-will I be able to take estrogen?

    Hi Michele -- I'm so sorry you've had to go through all this at such a young age.

    As far as I know, you should not take estrogen -- some oncologists might make an exception for an estrogen-based vaginal suppository like Estrace cream or Vagifem tablets, to help ward off vaginal atrophy -- but I think that's the most any doctor would advise.

    I expect some other posters will come along to comment who have personal experience with oophorectomy, hopefully some who are young and BRCA1-positive.
