Time for another round of tests

Tuesday I go for mammo and MRI again - six months since the last. I did much better this time with the pre-test anxiety. Didn't really start the obsessing until the last few days, didn't think about it much at all until last week. I guess it IS possible to force yourself to think about other things. Anyway, wish me luck. I'm taking 8 hour Tylenol ahead of time, along with a decongestant AND using a nasal spray (for the swelling of my face while lying face down for an hour). I just don't want to have to go through another stereotactic needle biopsy. If I have to have another biopsy, I think I will beg for a surgical one instead. It was easier.

I go  for my repeat MRI and mammo in about 3 weeks, so I'm right behind ya. I'm also getting better with the anxiety over time. I'm sorry to hear about all the sinus/congestion issues--hopefully the decongestant and nasal spray will do the trick.  Won't they let you turn your head to the side? With my last 2 MRIs, I go in head first on my back for about 20 minutes, then they bring me out to put in the IV, then send me back in for another 20 minutes on my stomach with head turned to the side and arms up over head on the pillow. But my breast care center is no longer doing MRIs, so I need to pick up all my old films and bring them to the new facility, and they may have a whole new procedure to follow. (I hope not, as I don't like change--puts me out of my comfort zone, where I'll already be due to a new place and new people!)  I may call ahead and try to find out, need to alert them of difficulty I have with IV insertion anyway.  Praying for benign results for both of us  and peace and serenity thru the process.

Since I'm having both sides at once, with the IVs, I was told that once it starts I can't move at all. I cannot lie with my head twisted to one side that long without repurcussions - ie. the situation with the stereotactic table. So, it's on my face for an hour. The worst part is looking at myself in the mirror afterwards.Embarassed I look like I've tied a big one on.

    Good luck yourself.

Good luck ladies!  Hope you both have Nothing to worry about whether that be in the MRI positioning or the results!  Only great to report will be our thoughts!

Good luck to you both...you are both in my prayers.

I haven't had to have an MRI as of yet...I go for my first one in April.

How do they do them?  I am very clostophobic and they can never get IV's in.

I have not had a needle biopsy either...I had a surgical biopsy done.

Liveit----I've had 3 MRIs (2 for breast, 1 for shoulder injury)--they're really not bad.  A little noisy and "close" inside the machine, but they give you earplugs and I just close my eyes and try to relax.  I have to call ahead since I always have trouble with IVs. At the breast care center where I go, they had me on my back for the first 20 minutes, then they bring me out and put in the IV, then back in the machine on my stomach (with breasts hanging thru 2 openings).  Kinda sounds like you're in a  washing machine.  The first one I got so relaxed, I almost fell asleep.  The only real difficulty for me is staying so still for so long--I have chronic back and neck pain and a bad shoulder now as well.  I do deep slow breathing and pray a lot, which helps me thru it.

Anne, for one of my MRI's they had the table fitted with one of those round doughnut pillows like a massage table has, for your face to go in. I didn't like it and so they took it off and gave me pillows instead, but you might want to ask for that if you think it might help. Also, I always have to ask for more than one pillow. Using 2 or 3 is much more comfortable for me. Usually they will try to do everything they can to make you as comfy as possible.

Liveit, I absolutely refuse to have an IV inserted unless I have used EMLA cream first. It's a topical lidocaine/prilocaine cream that you apply an hour before the procedure. If I feel the IV at all, it is just barely. Some places will use some kind of numbing medicine before IV insertion, but mine doesn't, so I always make sure that I do it myself.

You'll need a prescription for EMLA. If it's something you're interested in, ask your doctor about it. If you do use it, it would probably be wise to call your MRI center the day before your appointment. Tell them that you are going to use EMLA and ask them how many sites you should prepare and where they should be. They'll probably want you to do at least 2 sites, so that they'll have a backup place in case they can't get the IV started in the first one. You may have to be a bit persistent about this, but hang in there. I think it is inexcusable that, even though it is possible to make IV insertion virtually painless, some doctors and MRI centers look at you like you've got 3 heads if you bring up the subject. But I guess this is just one of my pet peeves.

As far as the claustrophobia, I am mildly that way myself, so I understand completely. I always take Ativan before an MRI. This is something else you might want to ask your doctor about. I've never had an MRI where I had to lie on my back--all mine have been face down all the way. You might call your center and ask about this, just so you will know what to expect when you get there. They will probably give you earplugs to help with the noise. Some places provide headphones so you can listen to music, but mine doesn't. I find that the noise isn't too bad with the earplugs, though.

Good luck to everyone who is going in for tests--hoping for benign all the way.

GOOD LUCK ladies! Anne (Peaches70) you crack me up about lying on your face! I had an indentation in my forehead for another whole day!! Guess that shows how bloated I already am!

I guess I will be on the alternating MRI/mammo train/boat now. Glad I have you ladies to check in with.

Okay, I'm back. That was a long day. The mammo went fine - no extra shots or magnifications called for and no visit with the radiologist this time. Hopefully that is good news! The MRI took so long. I did prepare for it by taking a 12 hour decongestant AND using a 12 hour nasal spray, in addition to 8 hour Tylenol. Also, while I was in the machine, everytime it paused before moving a little, I shifted my face slightly so that the same exact spots wouldn't be so compressed. I didn't puff up or have trouble breathing. The crease in my forehead was not nearly as bad. I was actually okay with going to the cafeteria to get a bite afterwards.Laughing

The actual experience of the MRI is not that bad for most people. It IS very noisy, even with the noise-blocking headphones but didn't hurt my ears. I'm not claustrophobic, but I guess it could bother you. Since I was lying on my face, I couldn't see the tube, I just knew it was darker when I was inside. It took over an hour. I had to keep my arms over my head and not move (except for the little sneaky head thing).

So, now I guess I wait for the report to go to my doctor. She says it comes right away to her. I am expecting it to be perfectly clear. How's that for positive thinking?!

Peaches---that's great news about the mammo!!!!  Glad to hear the MRI went well--I'll be praying that's benign as well.  When it comes back OK (notice I said "when" versus "if"--thinking very positively here too), will you be putting the plans for BPMs on hold?

Question about the arms over the head?  What if you can't raise the one of your arms over your head? Then what can they do for you? Anything?

I have a bad shoulder, so I asked about keeping my arm(s) down by my side, but they said no, it would interfere. There isn't enough room to put your elbows out to the side--the machine is very narrow, so I had to put my arms overhead, despite my shoulder pain/discomfort.  I would call ahead and ask if there is any other possible positioning for the MRI.

Anne (awb), I will admit that I am feeling conflicted about the PBMs now. Just having things go okay this time doesn't insure anything other than no biopsy, which is a big relief in itself. Until I hear from the doctor, I don't know if the close monitoring will change, which still could mean every six months forever. Also, I am not happy with the continued hot flashes (oh, yes, they came back after that lovely 2 week reprieve) and no way to relieve them, but I know that many people are dealing with them, so I can't really count that as a reason to get surgery. I will have to think on this some more.
