land's end swimsuit experiences

SusaninSF,
Don't feel bad for being a "nay-sayer"! It's good to have everyone's opinion.
I went to the Carol Wior site and liked some of the suits. I couldn't find any mastectomy suits though so I'm wondering if you wore normal suits and if so how it worked etc...
I like wearing sexy suits too. I went to a swimwear site and found this suit which I thought was a knockout but I don't know if I can make it work with my prosthesis (where there's a will there's a way?) -
Darya, very nice suit above - very sexy.I myself, do not like the L.E.s suits either (I am sorry). I stick with regular bathing suits and try to make the best of them (stuffing, wearing ones with an almost sports bra top).
Last year I had only one boob and had a terrible time finding a suit that would work. This year, after proph mast of other breast, I am completely flat, which leaves me with more options. I bought a inexpensive suit from VS with a slightly padded bandeau top, which actually has slits in the sides of each cup so one may stuff a bit of shower scrubbie in each side if she so chooses. I tried the suit on the other day and feel very comfortable. Bear in mind that it is not a suit to swim a triathalon in - Title 9 might be more the place to look for that type of suit. The bathing suit is below - please note I look NOTHING like the model in it, but you can get an idea of how the top covers.
-
Love the suit, Raye!
I too look nothing like the model in my pic! -
Amazing, I was just thinking about camping this summer, ansd wondering about the water. This is perfect timing for me, eases my mind. I hope no one deletes these posts as I look forward to referring to them later.

I'm pretty frustrated as I can not find anything I like. I'm a size 6 and had a bi-lateral last year. Even though I am 54, I want to look a little stylish. I did like one of the Lands Ends 3 piece suits, but it's not available in my size, only larger sizes still online. Also liked several of LAST YEAR'S Amoena suits and, of course, they are no longer in my size either.
I can't find anything for this year by Anita available in the USA? Everything I find is in the UK or Europe. (By the way, there are several designers from the UK who make cute mastectomy suits. I'm seriously considering ordering from http://www.nicolajane.com/ , only I'm afraid it won't arrive in time- I need the suit near the end of March)
-
Jan,
Ok, I just checked out the nicolajane site. Cute, cute, cute. I ordered one of the tankinis and also some Anita bras. Thanks for mentioning it! I'll let you know how long it takes to get to me.
-
JanClare,
You might check out the Women's Personal Health Resource. They show lots of Anita suits on their site. Here's a link to their 2008 models: http://www.womanspersonalhealth.com/categories/262/1/Anita-2008-Swimsuits-NEW-.htm
I'm with you--I'm about to turn 59, and still want to look stylish. Don't give up. I have an Anita suit I really like. Also one by Classique. And a couple of Land's End tankinis.

Thanks, Erica. Alas, there's only one size available for each of those suits and it's either 8 or 10. See, that's what's making me wonder if Anita is no longer selling- I can't find anything in the US that is selling a range of sizes- those seem like sample sizes. Like that store had those as sample sizes for people wanting to order, but now they are just selling them off?? If that makes sense??
Does anyone know if Anita runs small?? I might be willing to order an 8 in that case.
-
BUT!!!!!!!! I check out their sale suits and found several I liked! Wahoo!!! I bought this one:

THANK YOU!!!
ps- they have several very cute bikinis on sale as well! Like this one:

JanClare,
Glad you found something you liked. Hope the size works out. FWIW, I wear size 6 but my Anita is size 8 and fits fine.
-
Darya,
Wow! That suit is drop dead gorgeous! It would be too low cut to work for me but you're creative with sewing and could probably figure something out. Carol Wior does have mastectomy suits.
This is the one I like best: http://www.womanspersonalhealth.com/products/907/Carol-Wior-Mastectomy-Swimsuit.htm
I tried sewing pockets into my old suits that were higher cut by the neck but they couldn't take the weight of the prosthesis so that part of the suit sagged. Not pretty! Also, the non mast suits have arm holes that are cut too low. I noticed that the mast suits are tighter around the chest and under arms.

-
Ladies, these suits are gorgeous - I had no idea they were out there. Here is a nice one!

-
I am happy with mine and delighted at the price! I have tried others and added a pocket but was amazedto find one that was flattering at this price.
-
Wow! So many wonderful choices you all are pointing out. I love anything with diagonals because they're slimming. (Now my new problem is deciding on one!)
SusaninSF, I hadn't thought about the weight of the prosthesis issue. This is getting more complex - now I'm thinking I'll have to add a pocket but also insert an underwire with it to support the weight. Hmm...
Janclare, "Even though I am 54, I want to look a little stylish". Of course you do! Love your glasses btw.
I wish there were a good store in my area, as it would be nice to try things on. I live in Toronto, which is very big, but the only mastectomy stores I know about are tiny eg. at the hospital and have really dowdy things. Does anyone actually have a large, good mastectomy store in their area? I feel we're an underserved market.
-
Just bumping this up so that Sophia's spam post isn't at the top of the list.
-
I only know of one specialty mast store in SF, at the hospital. Last I looked there were very few suits and they were all very matronly. I've relied on web sites but returns are a hassle. I often end up keeping things I would normally have rejected if I had tried them on. Good enough to not bother with the returns process kind of thinking.
Seems that most younger women opt for reconstruction these days so there's not much of a market for specialized mast products for the young or the young at heart.
-
Susan - Amen! Not all younger/young at heart women want or can even have reconstruction! There's got to be a market for ladies like us. With the exception of a few I've found on the links above, most suits are not to my liking, hence my going with regular bathing suits and trying to make them work.
-
I notice that Land's End now has a v-neck mast. suit. I live in v-necks so I am happy to see something a little different that may work for me. I just ordered one last night. I have learned to order when I see it because if I wait too long my size is no longer available.
I know...you all probably think that all I do is order clothes, bras, and bathing suits. That's what my husband thinks too.
I wonder how many women end up not reconstructing? It does seem like there is more of a market than manufacturers realize. I really think there are more women than people realize who have chosen not to reconstruct. I also think there is a misperception that young women almost always choose to reconstruct. I just think that people are not verbal about having only one or no boobs. Well, except for me.
-
The numbers for reconstruction are all over the place. In some studies, the majority of women opt for recon; in others, a minority. Don't know why no one seems to know this seemingly easy-to-study info!
-
ha! And me, Carol - no secrets here!
My docs told me that most of their patients in my age group had reconstruction (I think all but two!!!). I live in a medium sized city in Ohio, not huge like NY or Chicago, but still. That puts us way in the minority.
-
It's my impression, too, that many, if not most, younger women opt to reconstruct. Yet, I still find stats that say 75% don't.
But there are definitely some of us who choose not to reconstruct who are young (not sure I qualify, since I turned 59 today!) or at least young at heart who want stylish bathing suits.
SusaninSF, it's interesting that you like the fact the mastectomy suits come higher under the arm. This is exactly what I don't like about them, since my underarms rub when I swim. Next time I need a new suit, I think I'm going to look into buying a regular one and having pockets sewn in.
-
I read somewhere that we in Canada have a harder time getting reconstructive surgery. Not sure why, if it's lack of surgeons or what.
My surgeon spoke to me about it at the time of my mastectomy, but somehow I couldn't entertain the thought (I was 41, now 42). The idea of moving my tissue didn't appeal to me, nor did the fact that it would be insensate. Plus I really like my stomach as it is.
I'm going to ask my surgeon how many opt for reconstruction, to try to get a sense. Maybe there are lots of us just not talking about it.
I'm curious too because I'm still in the process of designing nightwear for one breasted women (I've got the first prototype ready).
Carol, I think I sound fashion obsessed too when I write in these threads. Maybe I am a bit! -
Darya,
I can't wait to see what you have created!!
Barbara-Happy Birthday!! Your birthday is on Valentine's Day-cool. And, yes, you are young.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBARA!!!
About the swim suit topic, it's not that I like having a higher arm opening but I found that when I tried to retrofit my normal suits the prosthesis would show through the arm hole. Part of the problem was that the suits need to be tight enough to keep the prosthesis secure against your body and, given the weight, that's rather difficult. I use a swim prosthesis which is lighter but still couldn't get the the retrofit to work.
I don't think many women don't have reconstruction at my breast care clinic but I can ask if they have any statistics. I'm sure there are huge variations by country, state and city. Reconstruction is pretty complicated surgery compared to a mastectomy alone.
I too spend a lot of time searching for the perfect bra, swimsuit, camisole, etc. This site sure helps with that process!
-
SusaninSF,
What you say makes sense about the prosthesis showing. The higher-cut mastectomy suits do give me security, which I care about. Even though my friends know all about my surgery, I certainly don't want to a suit that gaps or one that shows my breast form.
BTW, your comment about ordering online really hit home. I also rely a lot on websites and returns are definitely a hassle (plus the extra shipping costs). I do sometimes keep things I probably wouldn't have bought if I'd tried them on.
-
The Lands End suits I wear are the tankinis. You can buy the tops and bottoms separately, so you can get the leg height you want. They sometimes have a few of them at Sears so you can try them on. Otherwise just order a few different cuts and return the ones you don't want to Sears.
-
Hey all, I'm new here, but I'm scheduled for a bilat. mast. in May with no reconstruction planned, and at this point I'm planning to go form-free. What's the swimsuit situation for women with no breasts and no forms? I love to swim and don't want to be stuck without choices, but have no idea what I'll be looking for.
Thanks!

My problem is that I wear a size 6-8 suit and have a size D cup natural breast. I can never find a suit that fits a D cup. The LE does have some regular suits with a D underwire cup. I'm thinking about getting one of those.
Have any of you had this problem? I always had this problem before BC and would just cut out the inside bra, but now, that I'm older I can't do that because I need the support on the natural side.

Elaine,
I wear a size 4-6 suit and wear a DD bra. I haven't had any problem with the mast suits because they are a little big. I have a Carol Wior and an Amoena suit and I think they are both size 8 since that was the smallest size available. They don't have underwires though.

This is my first time on this site and I just happened upon it while looking for a swimsuit. I was diagnosed at the age of 34 and have had a bilateral mastectomy. I did order a suit from CEEB last year and I was so self conscious about wearing a suit while on vacation but was approached by a woman who commented on how flattering my suit was and it turned out that after we talked a while, she was also a breast cancer survivor. I think God puts people in our path just when we need them! I love the idea about the bath puffs - I will have to try it!
