    Hi all -

The question is for my friend who's just starting this journey. (I'm a one year survivor, but such a different situation that I can't answer some of her questions!) They want to do chemo before mast, but need to do a couple of additional tests. I went with her to the oncologist today, and he talked about Herceptin among other things. She is ER+PR+ but the HER2 test is not back yet.

My question - Herceptin will only be given if she turns out to be HER2 positive - is that right?

    Thanks much - Minz

    Minz,

i would have to say yes to that.  Though i've heard of borderline results, where herceptin is given... but definitely not for her neg. cancers.

keep us posted on her results.

    God Bless,

hi minz...i can only share my experience.  i had mast before chemo, etc.  i just finished my year of herceptin after chemo and rads.  yes i was her2+++.  i think it depends on stage perhaps.  my cuz has all same markers that i do but only had rads due to being stage I where i'm stage III.  she had no chemo or herceptin but did have a mastectomy after 3 lumptectomies.

i wish your friend the best of luck.

Yes Minz - Herceptin is only given to Her2+ BC - make sure your friend gets the FISH test if her IHC test for Her2 positivity is inconclusive - a 2+ - my IHC test (the first test usually given) was inconclusive, so my onc. sent it out for the FISH test - this stands for fluorensence in-situ hybridization.
