Any suggestions for a small dog problem?

I'm getting a problem here and I'm winding up with pee butt---me!

--spending allot of time in the shower.

My previous dog was a huge Royal Standard poodle with a bladder of steel--bless her sweet soul.

But my tiny one has a tiny bladder and is getting up in years.  She's been a chugg-a-lugger since she was a pup.  In fact, quite a few guests have been taken back when she would help herself to their water (she viewed all plastic cups as hers- LOL)  a habit that has been broken.---and she's always begged for ice.

She has had blood labs done over the years and they've always been normal.  Anyway, all my furry friends two cats and my forever pup all

sit on the leather recliner together with me.  But more than once if the mailman comes, fed ex etc. I'm getting soaked to the point I need a shower -pronto--last month my bed was soaked.-not good as it is a sleep number bed.

Yes, I will get labs done again, but short of putting a diaper on her anyone have any homeopathic remedies? Should I limit her water?

    Any help would be appreciated!

Aww, I'm glad you're getting her checked again but I bet it's natural doggy aging. I listen to Dr Warren Eckstein(I have a lot of respect for him) and I've heard him get this question before--if there's no infection or diabetes or such, he's recommended diapers for the older dogs. Make sure you clean up the urine with a product like simple solution-an enzyme cleaner that eliminates any scent from the dog's perspective. I think I would make sure she went out right before you expected the mailman, too. If she's always been a drinker, I wouldn't limit her water...might create more problems. Warren has a call in show and a website...you might want to check with him. Good luck!

Ask your vet about Proin, chewable tablets for the management and treatment of canine urinary incontinence.  I've heard good things about this....as I work part time at a vet clinic.

    Good luck!

Thanks Bay---I'm using Natures Miracle by the gallon.  I'll check out Ecksteins website---used to watch him many years ago. I remember when he advised Wee Wee pads.  Yes, I'll definately try to get her out again before the mail and again before

the anticipated arrival of the UPS delivery man on our street.

I know she wouldn't soil an area she's sitting in consciously.

    Aus--I'll check into the Proin.

My vet moved out of state so I'm going to start with a holistic vet very soon.

I have rubber backed, bath mats, that can be washed in the machine on all my chairs in the den, Suzy likes to lay there... As they are soiled, I wash them..  I've gotten wet sitting with her also.... If she is going to sit with me, I leave the mat on, when I sit, otherwise, I just remove the mat before sitting...  It's a pain in the .....   but she's getting on in age, (a white chihuahua).

Are you sure it's not thyroid problems?  I had a dog with hypothyroid and occasionally needed a change in script and would have this problem.  Not often, but a couple times we had to go through changes in dosages b/c of urinary problems.  She also drank like a fish from day one and would drink just about any fluid at any time, eating snow, ice cubes, you name it.

Hope you can figure it out, it's too bad for her as I'm sure she's feeling poorly about it too.

Mitt---That is a very good idea---I'll try to find some that would be comfortable to sit on.

Wish--I hadn't thought of the thyroid--my concern was diabetes but I guess labs would shed light on that as well.

I have a miniature schnauzer who is 15 years old and has started to develop bladder control problems.  She has been on Proin for about 8 months now and the bladder problems went away.  However...about 3 weeks ago I noticed that her breathing appeared labored.  Took her to the vet who said she now has fluid on her lungs.  So she is off Proin and on Lasex.  Of course with Lasex, she is peeing on herself again.  But her breathing is much better.  I did not think to ask the vet if the Proin could have attributed to the fluid on her lungs but I have wondered about that.

But we'll just have to deal with it because she is our baby!  I'm hoping when she finishes her Lasex that everything will be back to normal!

Debbie--Know what you mean.  I have no children so, my fur-babies

are my babies. Very rough watching them age. Hope the Lasix does the trick.

I had a sweet Pom.  Near the end of her life she had a lot of problems.  Somehow I trained her to use the Pee Pads.  She could not take walks anymore.  I don't want to think about it because I'll start crying.

Shirley--At the end my Standard Poodle was unable to walk as well. Even now I can't think about him without tears.

I was so heartbroken that it took me ten years to get my little one.  Even in the dead of winter and heavy snow she won't use the pads--so I'll cover things and try to put diapers on--don't know if she'll stand for that one----Get the idea she's hopelessly spoiled!

Hard to think of her as getting up in years.

I have so much admiration for those who rescue doggie seniors.

    Susie,

I don't think limiting the dog's water intake would be at all good, since aging animals need plenty of water for their aging kidneys. I used baby boy diapers on my 15 year old Cairn terrier.  I cut a hole in them for his tail and put them on just like you place on a baby.  I had a neighbor who had a large Golden who was also 15 and she put the diapers on him the opposite way, horizontally or sideways.  There are also meds that the vet can rx to help with the incontinence.  I always had the rubber backed baby sheets to put on the dog's sleeping place or my bed or furniture.

It is a very difficult time when our little furbabies get to this stage.

    hugs,

    celia

When our 14 yr old cocker/spitz developed "leakage" issues, the vet put her on hormones.  The vet said that often incontinence in older dogs were related to doggie hormones.  Worked like a charm, no more soggy me!
