Weight gain Estrogen Dominance

I posted this on the hormone page but no response. Is there a natural and safe alternative to control Estrogen Dominance?
The light bulb came on today. I have been scratching my head about my bloated feeling, while hardly eating anything. It finally struck me; the estrogen dominance was back.
I am wondering if my brief, 2 week tour of duty, each, on Femera and Arimidex brought it back.
I had it about four years ago. When I finally figured it out, I took natural progesterone and black cohosh. I also believe this is about the time the cancer started growing. I emailed the onc about what I could do. Have not heard back. Can I take black cohosh etc?
Ironically I just saw the med onc this week. I told her about the bloatedness but she just asked if I was eating more, which I am not.
She wants me to start tamoxifen after I have the metabolizing test. Would that decrease the estrogen dominance?
It is very uncomfortable as it is like a water weight gain but you cant sweat it out. There are other side effects too, like worse sleep.
This is all hard to make sense of. It seems the AI's would have prohibited the ED. But now I am wondering if it somehow rebounded it.
Anyone had any experience with this either before or after dx? Got any ideas, natural alternatives?

Do you need to diet any? I've been doing the high protein, low carb diet with loads of water intake these last couple of days. The water loss has been wonderful. It's been said the first few days of this diet is actually more water loss then fat. No way of knowing if that's a fact, but I'm down 5 lbs since I started it 2 days ago. And if it is all water, then thank you very much. I'll try to put my rings on and if they slide on easily, I've lost mostly water. It's the only test I have.
-
I am normally petite and in shape. I have been extra careful of what I eat lately. That is why I know it must be the ED. Is it safe for us to use progesterone creams or black cohosh?
-
No I wouldn't use progesterone cream. Why do you want to take black cohosh? It's still iffy because conflicting studies have found that it might be estrogenic, and others say it isn't. Until they're sure, we have to avoid it.
You might want to try this until you begin tamoxifen: Deficiency of Vitamin B6 and Magnesium. Both of these are necessary for the neutralization of estrogen in the liver. Too much estrogen also tends to create deficiency of zinc, magnesium and the B vitamins. These are all important constituents of hormonal balance.

Hi,
What is estrogen dominance? Is it caused by hormone therapy? Or is it caused by having your ovaries removed? I never heard of this. I have gained weight too and I am anxious to learn.
Thank you,
Katie

Christiane Northrup talks about estrogen dominance in her book on menopause. I recall her talking about it in reference to hrt therapies and how many women are prescribed more estrogen when their estrogen levels are already dominant over ... .... well, I guess dominant over progesterone.
She also said women tend to gain weight as their ovaries decrease their production of estrogen because fat can also produce estrogen.
Bliz, have any of your doctors run a TSH test to learn your thyroid level? Unexplained weight gain and difficulty getting it off can be a sign of thyroid disorder. I've been battling fatigue since I started tamoxifen. Now I'm wondering if my thyroid is to blame for that one. The 'normal' range was redefined in 2002 and all my medical professionals locally are still using the old standard.
If you have estrogen dominance, I think Northrup is a great author to read for more information. One thing I don't like, however, is her audience is just women in general. As cancer patients, so many things are different for us. Like using progesterone cream, for example. I think Northrup does recommend it, but anyone with an er+ tumor should stay away. She's also very big on soy. Soy this, soy that. Even though I do eat flaxseed for breakfast, based on her recommendation, I do stay away from soy. As much as possible anyway. Soybean oil seems to be in every single bread product these days.
-
The strange thing about Northrup recommending soy is they think too much soy could be responsible for getting thyroid problems. Research changes daily, but the book stays on the shelves forever.

I read that mushrooms have a AI result on estrogen.
Also, Melatonin.
Try to eat a very low sodium diet, meaning, no prepared foods, take out or soups. They are loaded. Salad dressings etc. too, you can get herbs without salt for dressing. Cayenne pepper to make it spicy.
Have you had a gyn check up to exclude ovarian cysts?

-
Calico,
What do you mean by mushrooms have an AI result? Do they increase or decrease the effectiveness of AIs ? Beth Last year soybean oil and soy lechitin were elements of soy that were listed on this site as not a proble-also soy sauce. Now cooking with soybean oil in large amounts might be different, but I did not think you could cook with it.Beth
-
Kmb,
I think they do the same as an AI, prevent the enzyme aromatase from doing the job.
Will try to find the link for you.
God Bless
-
"The researchers found that out of seven vegetable extracts, mushrooms had the most effective anti-aromatase effect due to one phytochemical: conjugated linoleic acid. They were surprised to find that mushrooms contain conjugated linoleic acid, a compound that has previously been found to have anticancer properties, because it is mainly present in animal-based foods."
Why not just take CLA? We probably would have to be eating quite a bit of mushrooms each day to get the anti-aromatase effect.
Beth, I wouldn't eat soy lecithin if my life depended on it. Whether it has no estrogenic effects is secondary to how they get lecithin.
-
Guess I lost that post. I eat super healthy, take all kinds of vitamins and minerals and had the TSH test. It's the Ed. Then I read conflicting stories on this is good or it is not good. WHat's a girl to do? I fear the ED as that promotes beast cancer also. Would the AI's also kill the ED? Maybe that would be a reason to go back.
-
Bliz,
To put your mind at rest, ask your Dr. to check your estrogen level. You've been on AI's and they should have lowered your estrogen level. Having water weight gain is not unheard of here for those of us on AI's. Self-medicating with progesterone or black cohosh especially for us who are ER+ is not the answer. Talking with your Dr. should help with your worries.

I emailed her on Friday and had my estrogen/progesterone levels taken in the Fall, I believe. Dont have the numbers but she probably does.
I was only able to be on Arimidex for two weeks and the same for Femera. Couldnt tolerate the SE's.
Hopefully I will hear back from the onc soon, but my experience is the traditional medical field does not understand Estrogen Dominance. Left untreated, it can cause cancer too, so what the heck do you do?
-
Although the onc and probably everyone here will not agree with what I did, I feel 100% better in only two days of putting the smallest amount of all natural progesterone cream on the soles of my feet. It is Dr. Lee's formula.
I have probably naturally eliminated about 3 pounds of water weight in the last 24 hours. Convinces me this is what is the problem. Now will be interesting to see what the onc says and what I will be able to do long term. I will try the smallest amount maybe only every other day until I hear from her
I did get to Christiane Northrup's site and submitted a question about the above.
-
If Dr Northrup answers your question, I'd love to hear what she says. What I think I recall from her book about progesterone is it has a big role in the cycling out portion of a cell's life, whereas estrogen is more instrumental in cells cycling in. So if that's the case, I don't see why there's not more attention being paid to progesterone. It seems like the forgotton hormone.
-
Someone at her site answered that is was okay to use the progesterone cream. I will still be careful and use very little until I talk to the onc. I also ordered Dr. Lee's book about what your doctor doesn't tell you about breast cancer.
This is one of the really scary things for me. I knew something was wrong with me three years ago. I went through all kinds of tests with everything coming back normal. The doctors told me to accept feeling bad. That is was menopause.
Well when we finally got around to the mammogram, that was when the BC was discovered. And the doctors still told me that was not why I was feeling bad. Well I miraculously felt better after surgery and rads.
So in a lot of ways, I do not have faith in modern medicine. If the onc tells me no progesterone and I still feel miserable, I am probably still going to use it. And she is a well known doctor and I like her alot, but in some ways, I think we have to listen to our gut.
She also said the Estrogen Dominance, which I had treated with progesterone, three years ago, also probably had a role in the BC. So who do you believe and how do you treat yourself? It can be so murky.
Just so you don't think I am some crunchy granola in la-la land about cancer, I did fight with everything else prescribed including surgery and rads.
I just may do some other things differently. Who knows if I am right or not. It cant be good for me to be all hyped up on estrogen, either.
-
Hi:
Just putting in my 2 cents worth, as I'm trying to learn.
If you had BC and were hormonal positive, why would you even consider taking black cohosh and natural progesterone (natural or not) to me that's defeating the whole purpose, as when your positive; you have to get the hormones out of your system (i.e. tomox or A1's) not put some back in.
Somebody who knows about this, please be so kind and help me understand.
with appreciation,
Erika

I would say yes, it is controversial. But estrogen dominance is dangerous too. My onc believes it promoted the cancer. Having your hormones in balance, I believe, would be the answer. Just my two cents. Not recommending it for anyone else.
-
I've read Dr. Lee and he makes loads of sense of why we need natural progesterone, but where science has failed us, they don't explain why our tumors uptake progesterone also. So that's the part for us that is scary. Does our tumor uptake PR to help it to grow? Some women have high levels of PR in their tumor, so the assumption for me would be it's helping the tumor to survive.
Dr. Lee talks about how he got started on treating women with progesterone:
-
Bliz,
I don't really know anything about estrogen dominance so I can't help you there. I know my doctors are almost rabid about keeping estrogen OUT of my system. (I am 70% ER+ and PR-). I was metastatic right from the start so our situations are quite different.
I am wondering when you last had a pelvic exam and pap smear? I don't want to alarm you, but the bloating can be a sign of ovarian cancer. Johns Hopkins has more information here: http://www.ovariancancercenter.org/basics/symptoms.cfm Maybe it would be a good idea to rule that out to make sure?
-
Among the many tests I had in the last six months were pelvic exam, pap, ultra-sound of ovaries, mammogram and bone density. All were great.
Originally tests were done by my gyno to see if I would be a candidate for hormone therapy. Of course when the mamo came back, that was the end of that.
Funny thing about my er/pr test; no numbers assigned. Onc said we could do test over, or just live with it. I will bet my er was high and pr low.
Thanks for the Dr. Lee link. I sped read, but saved to favorites. I sent away for his book on BC.
Onc office responded that onc is out of town. She will check on black cohosh, the creme and send me a copy of my hormone levels from the Fall.
Hormone balance is the key I believe.
-
I am using estrogen cream topically. Just a trace amount. Is that bad?
-
What are you using the estrogen cream for?
-
My tumor markers have been creeping up since June. I have bc mets and am ER+ It was recommended that I take AHCC to build up my immune system. It is a combination of mushrooms. It will take over a month to show any improvement in my blood work. I have been taking it for about 3 weeks now. It is expensive, but I needed to feel that I was doing something instead of just sitting around waiting for the cancer to come back in for a landing . Greta
