Anyone Else Doing 4 weeks of radiation
Comments
-
I am 73 yrs old with Stage 1 breast cancer. I had my lumpectomy and now I am in radiation. I have been okayed to just have 4 weeks of rads - 20 treatments. They are giving me a higher dose every time so that after the 20 treatments I will have the same radiation as if I had 30 treatments. Has anybody else had this regime and if so are the side effects any worse. So far I am fine, a little tired, but only have had 3 treatments.

I'm 43 and finished a 5 day course of radiation just over a week ago. The amount was equal to the 6 week course and I received it 2x day. I'm a bit burned, and although I'm not really fatigued, I am definitely ready for bed when the time comes! My Dr said I should start healing after 2 weeks...it takes that long for the body to react to the radiation.
This might not be exactly the info you were looking for, but I just wanted to let you know that I have had good results thus far. Good Luck!

Hi donnatom,
I was dx w/DCIS in 4/07. Had lumpectomy,SNB followed by 16 rad trtmnts in July. Like you, they gave me double dose ea. time. Rad. onc. said it was Canadian protocol & would help to avoid skin breakdown sometimes seen w/6 wk. trtmnts. I had no problems other than pinkish area & "tanning" which has now disappeared. I did put pure aloe lotion on after ea. treatment. I was 61 at time of dx & onc said I was one of the youngest patients he was treating this way so there must be some qualifications as to who gets the 4 wk. plan.

Hi Donnatom.
I live in B.C. Canada, and have been told I will need 16 whole breast radiation treatments, followed by 4 "boost" treatments to the tumour bed. I am 55 and have IDC Stage l , grade l, negative nodes, ER+, and had my lumpectomy on Dec 20 2007. Several other women I know with either early stage invasive ductal breast cancer or DCIS, also have had 3 to 4 week treatments ( 5 days a week, Monday to Friday), so this practise appears to be an acceptable one in Canada.

i will have my 4th-8th radiation treatments this week. i chose the 4 week canadian method because my radiologist said it was less harsh on the skin. i am 49. i feel tired already, but not so tired it has changed my life much. good luck!

Good Morning All,
Thanks for your comments. I will be facing my 13th radiation today out of 20. So far my skin hasn't broken down although it is very pink. I use Aquafor after radiation and before bed time. I've had some fatigue but this weekend was a let down as I really was BAD fatigued. Couldn't do much of anything.. The only other side effect I have is nasuea. My radiology doc said I shouldn't be having it but believe me I have it. It's nice to know that I will only have 4 wks. of this instead of the 6 wk. regime. It takes 40 mins for my husband and I to get to the hospital in Denver and 40 mins. back home which at my age of 73 isn't easy. Thanks to you all for your input and hang in there. It will soon be over.

Good Morning Donnatom,
I had the same treatment in July and had tons of fatigue, but very little burning. Also, my breast was super sore and really full..similar to when I was nursing. I totally lost my appetite but eating eggs every morning seemed to really help and if you have a cholesterol problem, just eat the egg whites from hard boiled. Had to choke them down some mornings but made a huge difference with in appetite and energy. This shorter treatment was GREAT! It is so worth it....
Hugs
Julie

My dr. has offered me this option or 6 week option. I live in the US where 6 weeks is the norm. Do you know if it is as effective as 6 week cycle? I found a couple of articles on it but they were both from Canadian sources. I would love 4 weeks instead of 6

Paddler,
I am down to only 5 more tx. - so far so good. I have had a lot of fatique but that would be expected even with the 6-7 wks. of treatment. My radiology doctor said that I would get the same radiation as for the 6wk. treament and I shouldn't have any more side effects. I believe one of the favorable things is that I haven't burned - just a litle pink. I know that everyone is different but the 4wks. instead of 6-7 wks. was what decided me for it. Hope you do well. You might want to talk to your doctor again.

I had intra-operative radiation for a 5mm invasive cancer but as I had associated DCIS it was decided to also give 3 weeks (15sessions) external radiation. I did not require a boost and the heat and swelling was minimal - I applied Aqueous cream twice a day massaged into the scar area. Felt well after treatment but the fatigue set in about a month later. Four months down the road I am beginning to feel back to normal. My daughter tells me I use the 'cancer card' now to avoid doing housework etc!! Hope you all feel well soon.

I was offered the shorter radiation (16 sessions followed by 5 boosts) but turned it down. I know it is called the Canadian method and my physician suggested it to me since I work full time and the treatment would be shorter. I decided against it. I did not know it helped prevent skin breakdown. Had I known that I might have opted for the shorter treatment. I just wanted to go with the traditional since I did not know anyone who had received the shorter treatment and I was frightened.

Hi
I qam finally going in to get my CT simulation on Friday, Feb15th, after a very long waiting period(well, it sure FELT lengthy!)and will most likely be staring my rads the following Friday, Feb 22. I volunteered for the Canadian R.A.P.I.D. trial, which will be analyzing accelerated partial breast radiation versus whole breast radiaon by comparing two groups of women with early stage BC. I was hoping to get the shorter program, 2 sessions a day for five days, but it looks as though I was randomized into the group with the longer treatment period....oh well..
I still feel an huge sense of relief, even exhilaration, to be back at the battleground again. One gal I met said when she went through radiation, she treated the commute (it takes about 1 1/2 -2 hours, each way, including a ferry ride, back and forth to the cancer agency) just the same as if she was going to work, to prepare herself mentally and physically.
So, here's to 4 weeks of rads!

I finished my four weeks of rads yesterday and will start on Tamoxifen shortly. it wasn't too bad. The good part is that I didn't burn - came close but it's just like a sunburn. No itching or peeling. I did have some fatigue but that is normal even in the six wk. sessions and some low grade nasuea which the doc said was not caused by the radiation but probably because of my anxiety. Good luck to all of you - I will be interested to hear how your sessions went.

I am starting my 4 weeks of radiation tomorrow and have to admit I am a little anxious about it. I was also offered the option of 6 weeks, but 20 days of this sounded a whole lot better than 30.
