Mel, I only (only!!!) had 4 DD A/C, no taxol/herceptin and my hair started visibly growing about 6 weeks after my last chemo tx.

Mel, my hair started growing as soon as I was finished with the taxotere, and it continued to grow during radiation. I finished chemo in June and my hair is about 2 inches long, all the way around.

My hair started growing back right after my second Taxol infusion, right about where you are now.  I have a marine crew cut at the moment.  Last chemo was Nov. 8.

Hi, Mel, I had a total of 8 infusions 4 A/C and 4 Taxol. I had the last one on July 2, 2007, and my hair is now almost 2" long all over my head. It took until the middle of September before I noticed "real" hair about ½ inch long and that the white "chemo fuzz" wasn't as noticable. It is still straight as a stick, but the color didn't change much from before.

Some of the ladies I know from the boards here that have had herceptin report slower growth. It may take it a while but the hair will come back.

I had the same Tx as dkmaustx.

My last treatment was the first week of February and by end May/early June I had a nice head of hair and was going wigless.  Everyone said it looked so chic!

Hi, I would like to know, if I was STUPID to pull my hair OUT!?! I just thought, if hair fall out, just to get rid of it all the way.  Now I am scared they wiil never grow back, because they do not have roots.  at least thats what nurse suggested. Tx

Hi,    I had my last of 4 A/C on Sept. 18th.  A very fine hair had started to regrow before my last tx.  I now have a full head of very curly "silver" thick hair that is about 1.5 inches long.  It's also very soft and silky!  Just about everyone I meet, friend or stranger say they love my hair, it looks chic, and that I should keep it this length/style!  I was a light blond w/ grey intermittently before tx. Believe me, I would have NEVER cut my hair this short but am very comfortable with my forced style.

I really do think your hair will come back whether you tugged on it or shaved it off. I would run my fingers through my hair to"pull" it out until it finally became so depressing & painful-that's when I shaved my head. Hang in there-nurses don't know everything. I wouldn't put too much on what she said!

Hi!  I had my last tx of Taxol on Dec. 21st and have started a little hair growth.  Nothing to much, as well as my eyelashes have started to come back in but still no signs of eyebrows.

Everyone is different with the re-growth.  Not to mention some have even said that they have lost the eyelashes on 3 different occasions.

I had 4 a/c and 4 taxol.  My hair starting coming in while I was on taxol, just patchy but it really took off about 1 month after I was finished chemo.  It came back in dark and curly, curly.....

Oh it does feel sooo great when that hair starts coming back.  I went through chemo during the winter months so my poor bald head always got cold.LOL.

I finished with 4 DD AC and otoward the end of my 4 DD Taxotere, I had a 5 o'clock shadow; 3 months later I ditched the wig and (shortly after starting Carboplatin) and 8 months later (now) my hair is about 3 inches long and really curly.  Getting ready for my first serious haircut (feels like blasphemy).

Twink! Haven't seen you on the rad board lately! Hope you are well! Had to laugh about your thoughts on a "haircut"! I can't wait until that happens for me! My hair is darker than the med blond it used to be, so now it looks like a boring dark blond...I am still wearing wigs as I think my hair looks way too short. I feel like I will be in them forever!

Hey Barb!  All recovered from the rads experience now?  Yeah, it's a weird situation to be in... feeling guilty about cutting my hair after having been so long without any hair.  I colored mine as soon as I could (around the 2 month mark).  I couldn't stand the dull, gray color.  When I stopped wearing my wigs my hair was very very short too.  I can't tell you how many times I was stopped so that somebody could tell me the REEEEELLY liked my haircut.  I'd just smile and thank them for the compliment usually, sometimes I say it wasn't by choice if I was having a bad day... My point is that short hair is cool and it may feel too short to you but once you ditch that wig you'll never want to go back... honest.

    Barb,

It's me again...  I know it looks like I am following you around!  lol

But, Twink is right... I thought my short hair looked HORRIBLE!  I wanted to cry, because it seems to be taking SO LONG to grow out!  Well, I guess since it won't be shoulder length RIGHT AWAY, I decided to just start going without, even though it still feels too short for me...  I always had shoulder length hair...

But, when I went out without the wig, SO MANY people have complimented me on my hair!  It is amazing to me!

... when you get the courage to stop wearing the wig, you'll be glad.  Even though my hair is SO GRAY!, I am going out without the wig... and I will wait SIX months until I color my hair again... I am researching to see if I can find an ALL Natural Haircolor.  I am just so afraid of doing something that may cause cancer...

    Hugs

Harley!  So you took the plunge and have gone topless finally!!

I get compliments on my hair all the time as well.  Now I kinda look like I have a very "hip" cut.  It's still very short, but thick and curly.  A little gel and spiking and I'm looking like this was actually a choice.

Talked to my hairdresser yesterday about covering the grey.  We're going to go a gentle rinse she called a "glazing" or something of the sort to make the grey look more like highlights.   She says sometimes it'll color the grey, sometimes not.  We're giving it a shot on Wednesday... we'll see how it goes.

I did the 12 weekly Taxols as well ( no Herceptin) and by the end of chemo I was ready to ditch the scarves (never did a wig) and go commando.  It was very short, but I was tired of the scarf/sick cancer patient look.

My hair started coming back in while I was on Taxol.  Had my last tx on Sept 26th but it's still very, very short....and GRAY!

I have been going hatless, scarfless (never wore a wig) since before Christmas and it feels liberating.  I, too, have been getting many compliments on it, very chic...ha, if they only knew.  LOL

It's also coming in straight as a pin, maybe still too short to curl?

I have sort of a white crew cut now.  I'm amazed at the number of people who tell me how "sharp" I look.  My last treatment with Taxol was on Nov 8.  Even though I like some of the wigs, I'm not going back to them unless (God forbid) I need some more chemo in the future.

You all are great!!!! I bet you all look great too... My hair is growing in funky...hard to explain but it doesn't stick up like a crew cut due to the longer hair that never fell out!!!! Anybody wanting to send me your pic I would love to see it....! I probably need someone to try to shape it up somehow!

Twink, I feel really tired 2 weeks after rads! The MD said that it is common to have fatigue 6 weeks post treatment....

Harley, when is that cruise you are taking????!!!! I bet you can't wait! Barb

    Hey Abbi,

I got tired of the wig, and my hair was showing thru the short wig, so I decided to just go out without the wig and see what happened.  I know that everyone who knows me knew I was wearing a wig, and they knew about the bc.  But so many other people who didn't know me have stopped me to say, "Hey, I really love your hair!"

You'll have to let me know how your hair color goes.  I am looking around for a new hair salon, since I had only just moved here before the bc dx, and the salon I used to go to before just doesn't feel right to me anymore.  I saw a "friend", someone who hasn't contacted me since she heard about the bc.

Keep me posted on the new hair color.  I'll be thinking about you Wednesday!  I may not be on the board after Thursday, because I'm leaving for that Caribbean cruise on Friday, and I gotta pack!

    Good luck!

    Barb,

I don't like my short hair do... but I have gotten alot of compliments on it.   But most of all, I  HATE the GRAY color!!  So, I think I will try to find a new hair salon to get my hair colored, and I am looking for an all natural color.  I'll see what happens.

Oh, I am SO excited about the cruise!  We leave on Friday to drive to Ft. Lauderdale, and spend the night at a hotel.  We board the ship on Saturday, and it is a seven day cruise.

I'll be on the board now and again before the cruise, but I'll check in when we get back to see how everyone is doing!

    Mel,

I had TAC x 6.  Hair started about 6 weeks after.  Most threads state that you'll have total hair on your head around 4 months post chemo.  That was true, but I made the mistake of thinking I could go out without a hat or scarf around that time........NOT!  It's been 7 months since my last chemo treatment and I just got to go out with a hat or scarf for the first time a week ago.  Hair is still thin in the front.

Take into consideration too that after chemo there are still hormone treatments etc. that will keep the hair from coming back faster or thicker.  I suggest some of the hair supplements like Biotine.

    Angelflight,

Thank you for your honesty...I finished chemo the end of Oct and while my head is covered with hair I would never go without a wig or hat either. I am so hoping that by July I will feel comfortable with my looks! Is your picture a current one because you look great! Barb

    Barb,

Nope the pic isn't a current one.  In fact it was way back before I grew the hair out long.  It was just to the middle of my back when the hair loss started and off it came.......lol   Drat the luck!!

It's been almost 8 months post chemo and the slowest process I've ever seen waiting for it to come back enough to style.  It's like the old saying "A watched pot never boils".......hehe

Hi everyone - my hair started growing back during radiation, but it came back extra curly and very dry - very unhealthy looking.  I started taking 100% fruits and vegetable capsules once radiation was done and within 4 months, I had incredibly healthy hair growing.  Its been growing like a weed, too!  My hairdresser was amazed at the transformation from unhealthy hair to healthy.  That was about a year and a half ago and I continue to take them - I'm complimented on my hair all the time - the thickness and how healthy it is.

My hair started growing as soon as chemo finished. It grew quickly and I'd heard that if you have straight hair that it would usually come back in curly and I was wanting the curls. I got them, but just in the back and it's straight everywhere else. It's been 2 yrs and I'm fixing to get my first hair cut and I sure hate to lose my curls.

    Hello Ladies,

I am a new to this craziness. I started chemo Taxotere & Cytoxan on Jan 3, 2008 and am just getting the nerve to join.... My last chemo will be March 6 at which time I start radiation and Herceptin.. How is the weight gain, I put on 15lbs since the diagnosis in Oct 07. I shaved my head and am fine with no hair because everyone tells me I have a perfectly round head. :) I started losing my hair 10 days after my first chemo treatment, i've read it is not suppose to grow back until chemo treatment is done, however my hair has started to grow back already (i just had my 3rd treatment last week thursday) go figure, My head is hot for at least 10 days after my treatment, I am fine with people at work seeing me without my scarve, however some people are uncomfortable.

My last tx was Nov. 15. My hair started coming in about 6wks after that. As soon as it covered my scalp, I started going "topless". It's still super short but I don't really care and a lot of people have said how much they love my haircut! One of my first outings without something on my head was to the grocery store. The checker said "Your hair is coming in!" (I had shopped there in a scarf before). Then he said "I prayed for you". I had never had any conversation except for the normal "did you find what you were looking for today" check-out conversation. I was really touched.

It's so comfortable to go without a wig! And I can get ready in no time! But one thing that annoyed me was that the hair on my legs was the last to fall out and the first to come back:-(

JulieF, the weight gain sucks!! I've gained about 25lbs since being diagnosed. Part of that is because I was on appetite suppressants before being dx and part is from hormones and a big part is from comfort eating.

Back to the hair thing, I'm on herceptin so I think my hair is growing really slowly. And I was curly/wavy before and so far it looks straight. It has a weird color. It's dark at the roots (I was dark blonde) but the ends still have that chemo fuzz that has no color. I want to color it as soon as I can. I've heard conflicting things on using hair color. Has anyone got good evidence either for or against coloring your hair after cancer?

    Cyndi-

My onc says it is ok to color my hair (it came in TOTALLY gray!), but I am still unsure.  I am thinking of trying a salon that will use NATURAL hair color (maybe henna based...).   I read that we should wait six months before coloring our hair, but I may go ahead and do it early... it has been 4 months.  I am so conflicted, by the time I make up my mind about coloring, it will probably be six months...

    Good Luck!

    Harley
