Problem taking chemo

    Hi,

I have written before about my friend who was recently diagnosed with IBC/Metastatic Breast Cancer.   The cancer has spread to her hip bone and the lining of her lungs.  She was also diagnosed with a liver disease a few months before the cancer was found.  She was able to do one treatment of Taxatere on October 11th.  Her counts were completely wiped out after that one treatment and she went in for blood and platelets.  Since then, we have switched oncologists after getting a second and third opinion.  The other doctors suggested she take Xeloda, due to her counts and her liver disease.

The problem is she is still unable to take the chemo because of her "gran" being .03.  They also don't want her to do the radiation to the breast and underarm because of her low counts.

Does anyone else have this problem?  I know that her liver disease (which is called "NASH") is causing the problems with the counts.  We know there is nothing that can be done about that.  But how long can she go without having any chemo?  What is going to stop the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body?

She is also ER/PR- and HER-2 negative, so she can't take hormone therapy or herceptin.  Has anyone else gone thru this or have any suggestions?

    Thank you for your help.

I have IBC . Have had lot of problems with platelets and white cell count. Docs have me platelet infusions and neulasta shots to bring up white cell count. Had least problems with blood counts while on Xeloda. Your friend needs to get second opinion as reducing dose of chemo can help also. Docs have done it for me. Its good you are there for your friend to offer support.I supported a friend through her battle with cancer 4 yrs ago so i have been support and patient. Take care of yourself as well as your friend.
