Frustrated w/doc

This rant is sort of an extension of my "rants about scans" post.

I saw a gynecological onc recently on the urging of my second opinion onc, due to pelvic pressure symptoms that I've since before my bc diagnosis. It had been an odd visit--she didn't want to do a pelvic exam, and grudgingly ordered a pelvic u/s to put my "mind at ease."

I called yesterday to get the u/s results and spoke with her nurse. The nurse read me parts of the radiologist's report, which included a recommendation for additional imaging--either via CT or MRI--due to "vascularization in the pelvic area consistent with symptoms."  The nurse said she would talk to the gyn onc and call me back.

So today the nurse calls back, says that the gyn onc reviewed the u/s images, and said that everything's fine, no additional imaging required. Yell

Given my pleomorphic ILC bc, I think that is insane.

I have no idea why this onc doesn't want anything to do with my case. It's been like this from the get-go--getting an appointment with her was like getting a papal audience, even with the referral coming from one of her collegues. And like I said, when I did see her, she didn't want to touch me. Now this, with her going against what the radiologist is recommending.

I am really, really upset. However, I will get this straightened around somehow. I had the nurse put copies of the report in the mail to me yesterday, and I'll take them to my regular onc (who doesn't know I saw the gyn onc) and get the scans ordered through her.

AAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Thanks, I feel better now!

    Okay, so I'm confused.  You saw this gyn onco on the urging of a second opinion onco, but the original onco is the one you are continuing to see?  My little head is spinning :-}

Why aren't you seeeing the 2nd onco if he's the one you are listening to in the first place?  Why not go back to him/her if they are ones listneing to your concerns, and not the original onc that you are still seeing?

I understand you wanting further discussions.  Seems very unprofessional for the nurse to give you results and then with questions, for the gyn not to talk to you.  I'd be sending/taking those to someone too.  Most perferable another (better) gyn.  Perhaps your original onco can get you into to see someone more passionate about their practice/clients and not so high on her/his horse!

LOL, my head spins from this, too!

You've got it straight--I have a regular onc, a 2nd opinion onc and the gyn onc. The 2nd onc and the gyn onc are at a university hospital very far from my house, and the regular onc is close to the house, so that's who I see and who treats me.

A visit to the 2nd opinion onc who sent me to the gyn onc would be a major production logistically, and I've only seen him once, so it's not like I have much of a relationship with him. I'm more comfortable taking this up with my regular onc.

I feel that if I have a problem in the pelvic area, it's from my ILC bc, not a new gynecological problem. Just my gut instinct.

    Dear Nash,

Sometimes the medical system just fails us. Fails us in ensuring our needs be listened too, fails us by not treating us with respect and including an examination of the area of concern, and fails us by not personally reviewing with us the interpretation and suggestions of the tests ordered, all placed in the relative framework of our personal and particular history as a breast cancer patient.

Moving on is our mantra when these circumstances arise in our breast cancer journey. Yes, it takes time, it takes money (may help to alert your insurance company of these problems so you don't get charged) and most importantly, it takes a recognition that we are worth 100% beneficence, or looking out for by our physician caregivers.

Your mother raised her daughter well: due diligence in life. Yet you have much on your shoulders, so do diligently post to express your frustrations. We get it!

    With great respect,

    Tender

PS:If you need any recommendations for a second gyn oncologist in your area, please pm me and I'll be happy to try to help.

Just a question...are you on tamoxifen?  I have recently developed pelvic issues and am now being "double checked" to be sure it is just tamoifen caused side effects!

I too am very fed up with my docs who never spoke with me about side effects etc!

I'm not on tamoxifen yet--won't start until March (after radiation is done). I know tamoxifen can cause thickening of the uterus and endometrial cancer.

Hope your pelvic issues are nothing more than a side effect!

    Dear nash!

I am mad at my mum"s onc as well. She does not want to order the oncotype test.Grrrr I hate that !WhY is it so hard to listen to other persons" wishes and so on...I insist on doing that, because of hormonal therapy...I will make something up, I have already emailed another oncologist who is in charge of the whole oncology.

Yes, some oncologists are pretty strange, but you know what.Get better one!Do not be sad because of her, I mean if she did not do the pelvic exam, this is nothing at all. This is not correct!

    Go to another one!

    I would certainly do that!!!!!

    Kind regards!
    Matic
