    Hey Jewels,

It's late and just checking in.  I'm on a little pity party tonight.

Kathy - Sorry to hear what you are going through.  Can kind of sympathize since my ANC was too low and they wouldn't give me my treatment today.  Have to wait and see if comes up some and then maybe have the treatment next week.  I was bummed to say the least and now have to stay away from everyone so I don't get sick.

Does anybody even know what is normal for the ANC?  They were talking so fast and thinking about whether to admit me that I just never really understood.  Sounded like it was supposed to be 1000 and mine was 380??  Didn't admit me but I have to monitor my temp (which I have been doing twice a day).

I hope everyone else who had treatment today did fine and is feeling well.

Sorry to whine (yes, I would like some cheese with it).  I am just really upset to prolong this any more than it already is and the thought that it can become less effective to a triple negative, that just makes it worse for me.

    Goodnight Jewels, see ya tomorrow.

Hi vettegal - glad you made it through OK!!

I have heard your poem (which I love) like this:

        Yesterday is history

        Tomorrow is a mystery

        Today is a gift -

That's why they call it the present!

Thanks for the tip on headcovers.com - I hadn't seen that one before.

Take care of yourself for the next few days especially.  Watch out for those se's, especially the dizziness (the one that caught me off guard).  I'm sure you'll come through with flying colors!!

    Hi all!

Well, I made it through number 2! Half way done. I was pretty anxious about a reaction, but had no problem. Ended up in the chair a little over 4 hours. So far only se was the same stomach ache I had last time. Thanks Kimberly and golfer on the Miralax info. Started that up yesterday - hope it helps.

KathyL - So sorry to hear your setback. Hopefully you can get home real soon. Keeping you in thoughts.

JoTeach - Keeping your whole family in thoughts and prayers. You already have enough to deal with on the journey.

Kimberly and Julie - Congrats on the head shaving. Everyone seems to be getting through it very well!

Jenn51 - I had the same feeling in my mouth for about 3 days last time. It was a very strange feeling.

Deb - sorry you had to miss your tx. When will they check you again. Just curious, do you get the Neulasta shot after your treatments?

vettegal - good luck on the shaving.

Sounds like everyone made it through their treatments pretty well so far. Let's hope for few se's all around!

    Hi Jewels

I start chemo Jan 31 so I am jumping in a little late.  I have been keeping up with you ladies for a while but just haven't been ready to join. My journey has been : biopsies of two tumors in right breast, one Mammotest, the other ultrasound guided and was diagnosed November 23 2007 with IDC. Met with the Surgeon who ordered the Breast MRI and evidently I am very claustrophic, because with 10mg of Valium, I still couldn't do it.  :( Had surgery on Dec 21st 2007-Quandrantectomy (double Lumpectomy) of right with reduction of left. When path came back, 1 tumor was E/P - & HER2 +, the other E/P + HER2-. Met with Onc, had MUGA scan & port put in and am starting chemo Jan 31st. The plan is Cytoxin & Adriamycin every 3 weeks for 4 and then Taxol & Herceptin every 3 weeks for 4. Then radiation for 35 treatments. remaining on H for 1 year along with Tamoxifin for 5 years. Have Chemo Orientation on Tuesday.

KarenL & Dana it looks like we will be traveling very similar roads. Your info has been so reassuring.

I live  in Central Florida, am 46 years old, have been married to Bob, who is my rock for 28 years and have 1 daughter Kaitlyn, who is 18 and will be graduating HS and heading off to college in June,  I work full time for the State of Florida, as an administrative assistant for a wonderful man who is so supportive, that he is going to shave his head when my hair goes.  How cool is that?? I don't think my feet have touched the ground since diagnosis, since God has been carrying me and has given me a peace about it all.  He has also provide a great support system of family & friends and now you ladies.

I am ready to kick some cancer butt.  I have got a wig and some hats & scarves, but am not looking forward to losing my hair.  They can have the boobies but my "style" is me, if that makes sense. I am not looking forward to Thursday.  The Onc gave me Emend, Ativan & Zantac for SE so I guess I am ready.  I know the first will be the hardest.

Sorry to be so lengthy but wanted to catch up.  Since I am so late in Jan will probably also jump over to the "Feb 08" group. Email or PM my anytime.

Hope everyone has an awesome Saturday. You are each in my prayers every day.

jenn51- i had 12 LN removed around the same time as you.  drain in for about a week.  i have no swelling and movement is back to normal.  are you scheduled for a follow-up with your surgeon anytime soon.  sounds like they may need to drain some fluid out, a least.  i'd make a call and let him/her aware.  are you doing the arm stretches?  they helped me a lot.

Good morning Jewels!  It is so hard for me to respond to everyone b/c I'm not at home with my notepad!! Majorly frustrating for me.  And the hospital's wifi boots me off often. Grrr!  Anyway, I am SOOO glad to hear everyone did well this week with their chemo rounds.  I think we've all done at least one round now, except Dana who should start soon.  D1: can you check you list and post this coming week's data for me if you have it?  I won't be home in time to do it and have no paper to jot notes.  The brain can only remember so much from one thread page to the next.

SIS Kimberly, JulieK, and vettegal stick out in my little fuzzy chemo-pea-brain as having good posts.  Sorry I can't recall the specifics right now.  But smiles to you 3.

D1: I also liked your idea for my kids, thanks!  The little monsters were too busy fighting last night for me to relay it to the dh.  I may tell my daughter a version of it today when I see her.  The dh says she's doing better today after he talked with her.

All the teachers in the group: didn't realize there were so many of you!  Such a great profession (my whole family except me is/was educators.  My bro was a teacher for many years and is going to PA school now).  You guys really play such an important part in all of our futures.  Hugs to you all.  Love all the poems and inspirational stuff people are posting, too.  It's been uplifting.

Deb102307: about the ANC... mine was 0 on admission (with a manual count around 100; the lab techs will check themselves if the machines give a low number).  I was told they like ANCs to be >500.  The ANC is the "absolute neutrophil count", a direct reflection of how many "baby" white cells you have.  Neutrophils are new WBCs.  WBC normal is 3.5-11 (there are several types of white blood cells in the WBC overall count).  If both ANC and WBC are low, you're at high risk for infection and they'll watch you closely for signs of infection.  The reason I was admitted was mine were low AND I was symptomatic (had a fever and was lethargic).  SO... stay away from sickies!!  Watch your temp, handwash like crazy.  I'd even suggest you get a facemask from a drugstore and wear it if you have to be around anyone other than immediate family, or if your family is sick at all (even mild cold symptoms).  You DO NOT want to end up where I did.  And no one I've been around is sick that I know of.

So Jewels, thank you all for your good vibes, the cell counts are going up!  What a pwerful group we are!  I am praying to be out of here tomorrow or Monday.  I am feeling much better, though the antibiotics are still working their wonders on my GI tract (hey, wasn't I the other extreme earlier this week???  Not fair!).  My goal for today is to hit the shower :)  Thanks for all the love and support.  It'll come back at you when you guys need it, too, I promise.

    Good Morning Ladies.

I was overwhelmed with thoughts of my sisters who had tx this week when I woke up.  All I could think about was how sh*tty I felt last weekend and I know you will all be going through that this weekend and I'm so sorry.  But the good news is that it will pass and you will wake up next Saturday and feel so much better!  Try to relax and rest and let your body get through this.  Keep drinking, eat when you can (small amounts), take your meds (prescribed and OTC), and smile when you can.  We're all here, pulling for you.

SIS Kimberly--You make me smile with the sunshine you're spreading.  I'm excited to see your pix.  Thanks for sharing your happy day with us.

Jenn51--You're smart to try to take it slower.  That was a change I made with my second tx and I think it was a better way to go.  I also agree with sista2 about your arm.  I had the most gawdawful time with fluid buildup (seroma) in my pit and in my boob.  I had to get aspirated (with a needle!!!!) several times a week for about 6 weeks (I never had a drain--probably should have).  The seroma is not dangerous, but SERIOUSLY uncomfortable.  Eventually, the body does sort it all out, but see your surgeon for some relief till it does.

Julie--You sound good and ready to fight the battle this second time around.  FUSE!!!!

Diana63--Good to hear from you.  I'm sorry you're still having trouble with your insurance company.  It's not like we don't have enough stress with this.  Hope the se's from tx#2 are mild.

Deb--I'm SO sorry you were postponed.  I think that would just set me off.  You sound like you're handling it well.  I dug out my Lab Value Reference Guide from my onc (of course, he never gives me my lab results, so I've never been able to do any comparisons, but that's another story...).  Here's what it says:

    Test                                                        Normal range

    WBC (white blood cell)                              4.8-10.8

    RBC (red blood cell)                                   4.2-5.4

    HGB (hemoglobin)                                     12.0-16.0

    HCT (hematocrit)                                       37.0-47.0

PLT (platelet)                                            130-400 (100 for chemo pat)

GRAN# (absolute neutrophil count)            1.8-7.8 (1.5 for chemo pat)

    Hope that helps.

Vettegal--Hooray, you made it thru the first night!!!  Hopefully, you'll be on your steroid high today and have a good time with the shaving party (I totally understand the desire to be in control--the hair falling out was kinda dramatic in a sad way).  I'm totally into the bandana thing.

PALady--I can see you're still smiling after tx#2--hope it stays that way.

JackieB--Welcome to our group!  You sound so well-prepared--that's a good thing.  Just try to relax as you head in to Thursday.  The infusion itself is really much easier than you think.  The anticipation is the killer!  And I'm so happy to hear you have such a supportive boss.  How refreshing after all the not so great stories so many of our sisters have shared.  Stop in often--we're always here!

    Take care, Jewels.

    FUSE!!!!!!

    Good Morning Sistas,

It's gray & cold here in IN.  I hope some of you are seeing sunshine.  I'm supposed to be logged onto my work computer but had to stop by for a quick check.

Vettegal, Thanks for the headcovers.com tip.  Will check that out this afternoon.  My scalp is beginning to feel weird when I rub it.  My BC Survivor friend said UH-OH.  Seems awfully early to me.

JackieB,  Welcome.  This is a great group.  You might as well stay here since you are officially a Jan. starter.  Everyone here will be just a step or two ahead & can give great practical advise.

Sista2 & D1,  No I don't have a follow-up w/surgeon.  Kinda wondered about that.  The swelling & soreness is better in the AM.  It's later in the day that it starts to bother me.  I HATE the thought of going to another Dr. appt!  I'll give it thru the weekend & maybe call Mon & see what they say.

D1, Add me to the list for next week, 1/31.  I get Herceptin every week.  Did you ask for a copy of your labs?  I did & got one right away.  Today I made notes on it from info picked up here.  But it came with my count & the norm & flags on low counts.  I was only borderline low on WBC & RDW (don't know what that is) but nurse said it wasn't low enough to worry about.  Smile

I best get back to work so I can go see my wig when I'm done.  I'm sending happy thoughts & prayers to everyone.  I'll check in later.

Hey Jenn, I tweaked the header a little for you, will you check it and make sure I have it right?  Thanks.

Yeah, I did ask for my labs a couple of times, but it seems I keep asking the wrong people.  They tell me I need to get them from my onc.  I'll see him again on 2/6 (next tx day) and I'll try to remember... (you know how that goes!)

Maybe my office is a little more relaxed.  I got mine from the RN who was doing my tx.  She had it in her hand when she sat down to go over it with me & I just asked for a copy.  Not sure how your place is but onc, lab & tx are all in the same area of the building.

YOU LADIES LOOK AMAZING WITH SHORT HAIR CUTS.  HATS OFF TO YOU - LITERALLY.  I cant believe how pretty you all look that is why I say sport a scarve and not a wig but to each their own regarding their opinion.  I will cut my hair as soon as I start my regimen and show you all my pretty self as well.

I have so many people this week in the hospital that conquered ovarian cancer and breast cancer and they all say the chemo is doable and that we all will be able to work and maintain a normal lifestyle - they say claim it and believe it and you will achieve it.

I hope you all are doing well, I get a PET scan on tuesday and waiting to get approved for the Muga next.  One step at  a time that is all you and I can do.

May you all maintain positive and have faith at all times thru this!

Once again you ladies are gorgeous with or without hair - Go girls!

Love ya so much - Dana Dane with Fame -  he ha.

OK, now that I've got the pics posted and gone back and read the posts, I can say Hey!

Jenn51- Bummer about the weird taste...it doesn't last too long. Mine for about 4 or 5 days. And the gas problem- HELLO, The Damsel of Digestive Distress here. I finally got GasX as well. I'm ready for next week. And...when the scalp starts to get tingly and sore, be ready to see your hair on the floor.

JulieK- Can't wait to see your pics.

Hi Diana68- Glad to hear from you, but sorry to hear about your insurance company. Umm, don't we pay the premiums...and doesn't that mean we shouldn't have to fight for our coverage? SUCKS!!!!

Get lots of rest and let those insurance people know who's in charge!!!!

ARDeb- Bummer the treatment had to be postponed, but at least you didn't end up in the hospital. Take care of yourself so you can try it again next week with me.

Welcome Jackie B- Glad you made it on the last Jan. Jewel train. I agree...hang with us since you're a Jewel...we're a great group.

Kathy- You sound much better today. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to be home on Sunday. Will you be able to prevent this kind of drop in the future? Hope that shower made you feel 100 times better....I know a shower always works wonders for me. And thanks for the kudos to teachers. Comments of appreciation are far and few between, so when teachers get them...they're like gold.

D1- Well aren't you all full of vim and vigor? You sound good this morning. Good to hear your sparkle. Thanks for the calendar!

Vettegal- Look at you!!!! Wow, love the balditude and that red hot wig. VaVaVoom!

Sista- Thanks for the "lookin' good" shout out. I'll bet your bald head is going to look better than you think.

Thinking of all my Jeweled Sisters...if you're suffering SE's...take care. If you're anticipating treatment 1, it's not as bad as you think...anticipation is so much worse. If you're on a 'good day or week' enjoy yourselves.

Hey, Dana you must have been posted at the same time! Hopefully you get your treatment started next week...glad you're getting the PET and MUGA before hand. Lookin' forward to your balditude unveiling when the time comes.

    God morning (CA time)

Day two and all is well so far...keeping my fingers crossed. I slept most of yesterday, fought a bit of a headache and drank so much water I can't stop peeing!

Thank you all for posting your beautiful pictures. My hair started falling out in strands yesterday and I didn't even want to shower this morning for fear of what would be left. Not as bad as I thought, but falling out in bigger clumps now. My 16yr old son plans to buzz me tonight or tomorrow. I think he's actually looking forward to it!Foot in mouth Vettegal and SISKimberly have inspired me to take some pistures of my own. I sure hope my head and ears are as pretty as yours!

I pray that the weekend provides you working girls some rest, and I curse those se! Stay away from us all.

WOW!  I had heard that bald is BEAUTIFUL, you gals really prove it.  You are gorgeous & vibrant!  But Vettegal I love your wig.  Sure doesn't look like one in the pix.  That's my fear, having it look like a wig.  Haven't made it over to BCSBFF's house yet.  I've spent the day pounding on the computer.  We are switching to a new software system at work.  Running a un-official paralell (chemo brain, how do you spell that?) and not ready to go live at all.  Horrible time for me to be missing so much time cause the other gals just aren't getting it.  I sit here at home & find mistake after mistake.  I'm sure they love all of my emails.  Anyway poor DH had to go in, we work together.  And will again tomorrow.  Not me, after today I get a day of rest.  Anyway, Mother's coming over with spaghetti & B-day Cake.  I hope that sweet tastes good to me, she makes the best chocolate on chocolate in the world.  Mon. I'll be 57!  Guess I should be proud to have made it this long, just didn't plan on spending my B-Day waiting for my hair to fall out.  Wink

D1, I have to agree with you on Vettegal's sweatshirt.

SisKimberly,  Thanks for the short hair poem.  Do these words just flow from you without any effort?  How great.

JulieK, looks like you have a wonderful support group.  I envy you.  Most of my family is in Milwaukee, a 5-hr. drive from here.  We talk all the time but it's not the same as having your kids here to hug.

I hear my recliner calling me.  I'll check in later on you guys.  I'm going to see if I can't print some of these pix with your names on them.  I can stick them around mu monitor & really 'see' who I'm talking to.

I dunno SIS Kimberly, can you get a mohawk wig???  And Julie, LOVED the shot of your support group!  You two TOTALLY rock the balditude!!!  I got tears in my eyes when I realize how beautiful we all are.  Who needs hair??  (Although I'll probably be happy to have it back.)

Julie--I'm wearing my Michigan sweatshirt today, too.  Tell Tyler we're twins in spirit today.

Oh Jenn!  Can I come by for cake?  We've already established that I'm into chocolate cake--I think you should share!  (BTW, I think you're our first b-day celebration!!  How exciting!!!)

Haven't done much today (as you can tell, I've been online a lot).  Just resting and then went to the gym with the family.  We're having coconut curry chicken for dinner tonight (my dh is a really good cook and I have tastebuds again for 10 days!) and watching a rented movie.  Sounds like heaven!

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Good evening Jewels!  This damn computer booted me off again right when I went to post.  Aggggh-- can't wai to get to my own computer again!

Anyway, so glad to read everyone's posts.  And the pics are amazing!  Like D1 said, it brought tears to my eyes.  You girls are beautiful.  And what struck me the most was that everyone is smiling!  Just huge smiles.  It was great.  Vettegal:  so thought your wig was your "before" pic.  It looks great!  SIS KIMBERLY: you are one cool chick!  I love the pic by the "style" sign. JulieK: I loved the pic of you and your son, and also the one of you and all you supporters.

D1:  Thanks for posting the upcoming week's info.  It truly wouldn't have happened with out you-- that's why you're our "fearless leader".

It looks like I may be able to go home tomorrow if my body cooperates.  I need to stay fever-free until then and my ANC needs to get above 1.5--- almost there!  Gotta run, din-din's here (yummy hospital food).

Awesome pics today, I can just see the "baltitude attitude" each of you have.  Its got to be just too cool to see each other, as you each prepare and then have the big shave.  Although I feel a little left out, I certainly won't bitch about just having my hair thin throughout the next 5 mos.!

I'm camped out in a motel room for the afternoon, we're at a speed skating meet for my son and done for the day, gotta like it they have wi-fi so I figured I'd check in.  Sure glad I did, as my mind goes into one of its whirlwinds of thinking about you all I now have even a few more faces to put behind the names.

Thinking of getting brave and hitting the hot tub at the hotel, although I'll check with my son first to make sure it won't embarass him since I'm only sporting one "hoot"!  Guess I should get on that "boob in a box" as D1 would say.

    Take care all, Carol

    Afternoon Jewels,

Julie K- I love your pics!!!! How great is that one of you and Tyler, you and your dh adding his touches, and you and your support team? You look great! Now go rest.

I find that if I have a big outing day like yesterday, the next day I'm wiped out. I did go out to lunch with my 24 year old son and my dh, but that's all I could manage today.

Jenn51- I didn't write a short hair poem (do you mean the part in my SE's poem about losing our hair?)

Of course, I have been contemplating writing a Baldacious Babe poem...it just hasn't quite formed yet.

    Happy 57th...no way!!!!...a little early.

D1- Too bad mohawks are against the dress code at school! HaHaHa Glad you're taking it easy and have an appetite for coconut curried chicken (yummy). My dh is an awesome cook, too. He used to own a restaurant (small cafe), but got burnt out. Thankfully, he still enjoys cooking for me. HipHip Hoorey for good taste bud days.

Kathy- Good news about tomorrow. My fingers and toes are crossed for you. Your hospital food certainly isn't going to be anywhere near as good as D1/OLE(Our Leader Extraordinare)'s homecooked coconute curried chicken, but at least it will give your body some needed fuel to build more blood cells.

    (silver lining?).

I'm off to find my reclining chair and maybe take a snooze...it's about quarter to four in the afternoon here.

    SIS Kimberly
