"Green Tea May Ward Off Weight Gain
But You'd Have to Drink a Lot of Tea to Match Preliminary Lab Tests in Mice By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MDJan. 23, 2008 -- The benefits of green tea might include blocking fat and keeping extra pounds at bay, according to preliminary lab tests in mice.
Don't skip over that word "preliminary." There's no proof yet that sipping green tea will do the same for people. Staying in shape continues to be a balancing act between calories and activity.
Here's what those preliminary lab tests in mice show:
- Less weight and fat gain. Among mice with an obesity gene, those that ate chow laced with green tea extract gained less weight and less fat.
- Less fat in the liver. There was less sign of "fatty liver" disease in the mice with the obesity gene that ate chow laced with green tea extract.
- Lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in mice with the obesity gene that ate the chow laced with green tea extract, compared to other mice with the same obesity gene.
A healthy liver isn't fatty. But obesity -- in mice or in people -- can lead to fatty buildup in the liver and cause nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
As for that green tea extract, the study used it in doses equal to what a person would get from drinking at least seven cups of green tea a day.

Since starting Green Tea every noon, I have noticed I am not as hungry the rest of the day.
I also notice that I am slightly nauseous if I let it steep too long. I've wondered if the strength may have some appetite suppression, not just the nausea.
It'd be fun to start a thread on what's your favorite green tea. I like the one in the white tea bag with the purple flower design on the front (oh that's just pitiful; I'll get back on this) and Tazo.
I'm just glad I like the flavor of most green teas.
I have loss some weight which I think is just not being hungry related.
Thanks, Shirley for bringing this to our attention.

Good news, Tender.
I used to take a couple of green tea supplements a day. Then I stopped. I now take one capsule a day...don't want to overdo it.
I sort of think that the green tea helped me from putting on MORE weight.
Everyone tells me to drink it instead of supplementing....I KNOW! I KNOW!
I did get on the treadmill about four times....LOLOLOLOLOL Then I seemed to have forgotten. Good excuse, huh?
It's right here where I am....at the computer in a vacated bedroom with a twin bed and dresser in here. Kid is gone. Grandkid sleeps in here.
Tender, I'm very happy that you have lost some weight. Ya know, even losing 5 pounds would make me extremely happy....just KNOWING I could do it. I know it takes patience.
Joan is the one who likes various teas. I took her up on trying the raspberry flavored one by, by, by....oh, Celestial (is that how it's spelled?). I think I'll go down and drink some now. Joan also has tried putting tangerine zest in her's and says it's good.
Gonna make that tea..it's cold here.

I started a thread awhile ago, asking for tips from green tea lovers on how to find more flavorful green tea or ways to make "regular" green tea more palatable. A few suggested Celestial Seasonings Rasberry Green Tea and I now love it. Every weekend, I brew two large pitchers of it and they last me the whole week. Every morning, I fill one of my large water bottles with tea and the other with filtered water and I'm set for the day. I just discovered Blueberry Green Tea, so I plan to brew that this weekend.
Oddly, I was at my new guy's house last weekend and noticed several boxes of green tea. When I asked him if he drank alot of it and, if so, why, he replied that it's a good appetite suppressant. I was surprised since I'd never heard that before and now you start this thread, Shirley! Maybe this will become the new (and much healthier) weight loss "gimmick"!
Let me ask this of you all.....how do you sweeten your green tea? I love mine pretty sweet, but don't want to use a ton of sugar or honey. And though I know artificial sweeteners aren't recommended, I wonder how safe Splenda is?
~Marin
-
Marin, drinking tea unsweetened is an acquired taste.I've always eaten a lot of Chinese and Japanese food, whefe they bring the teapot to the table. You'd never sweeten it, because, like beer, it washes the Asian food down perfectly unsweetened.
So it was just a small step for me to not want sweet tea at home.
And green tea is so much less strong than black tea.(Chinese Tea is usually black)
But if you really must sweeten it, please know that Whole Foods now has a Zero calorie sweetener.Called, ummm..Zero
.And, of course, being theirs, it is pure and w/out chemicals.
I dont put it in my tea, of course, but it DOES make MARVELLOUS hot cocoa with WF's Fair Trade unsweetened cocoa, and a nice cup of almond milk.Oh, wow, can you imagine?
(Good for us too!)
{{{Shirley}}}.I feel so bad to be WFing away when you're here.
-
Shirley, have your girls left? I was thinking about this... it's hard to see your dear one's go. I think a nice cuppa would do you well now. And darn, no chance of a WF yet your way? I'd always be happy to do a mailing to you...
Hmmm, I agree, Joan. Unsweetened tea, like coffee, is acquired. For natural sugar substitutes, is Stevia a problem anyone? I can't remember. Zero sounds just right on the calories.
I haven't tried the raspberry's and the blueberries, but find the passion green teas (Tazo) very delightful. But their green tea with ginger was too bitter or something for my taste buds. The Lipton green tea bags are too bland: no zest for the zestless.
Does anyone else ever find a transient flush, stomach reaction to green tea? I can't remember if Calico said she had such an experience. I think it's part strength which causes this is the source of the appetite suppression. There's some Japanese green tea drink that is so concentrated the public health ministry removed it from the market: but prior to that it was advertised precisely for weight loss.
Keep on walking, Shirley. And Joan, I hope your AI symptoms are receding more each day.
Tender -
You caught my eye here lol
I had green tea today and let it steep for less than two minutes, I didn't get as queasy as usual but still a bit....but it didn't stop me from chocolate
I need to drink more....and eat less...I find it better tasting when it's cold (cooled down).
I will test this tomorrow, see if I can get myself to do 3 cups.
6 pounds less would be a "happy weight" for me.....
Years ago, when I thought I had ovarian cancer, I drank chamomille and ginger tea all day, I barely ate due to fear and lost many pounds, I thought I found the miracle weight loss therapy.
Can't see it happen with green tea though, mainly because it isn't agreeing with me
I LOVE the tea at the chinese restaurant which is.....Lipton black tea lol...and no, it doesn't taste the same at home, I tried.
Ever heard of Mate tea? That's something the native Americans were suppose to use to suppress appetite (due to lack of food to feel better I guess)....tried it when I was a teen...nope...couldn't do it (wasn't overweight either lol)....
Interesting thread though....look forward to hear more...
-
Marin, wouldn't green tea be the BEST gimmick EVER for weight loss? I've seen the green tea advertised with Hoodia in it...but won't fall for that gimmick. As far as Spenda I do use it every once in a while. I'm not too crazy about the taste, but can eat it on certain things. Also, I can use it in tea WITH lemon.
You guys who are Yankee's (
) do not understand our culture here in the South...we like sweetened tea.
Yes, Joan, you should be ashamed of yourself to talk about Whole Foods. Just kidding. No joking..when I get back to Charlotte I AM GOING TO GO to WFs...PERIOD! My dd will have to make time for ME! LOL And WHEN I get to WFs I shall look for Zero.
Yes, Tender, my daughter and son-in-law left very early Tuesday morning. I received an email from her today (a short one) saying they got there safely. I will NOT cry!

Green tea has been able to put the brakes on for me in gaining weight. I haven't lost any, I never do, but I've stopped adding to it which is better than nothing.
I've tried a lot of different bag teas and couldn't like them. So I buy loose tea from Rishi-tea which imports from Japan. It is so good. I'm trying one from Iherb and I can't wait till I use that all up. It was half the price and half the flavor.
Eventually, I might lose a pound but not putting any more on is fantastic!
-
Shirley- I had heard this about green tea before- that it helped keep the pounds away. I mostly drink it for its possible anti-cancer benefits. My step-father is Japanese so I grew up since my teens with green tea as a regular beverage. I only drink it "straight up" either hot or cold, never sweetened or with flavors added. It is an aquired taste, but one that was easy to aquire for me. Re: tea and nausea- I tend to get that more from black tea which is too bad or I would drink it in the am instead of 1/2 caf coffee. Having a bit of food in my stomach helps, so this might work for those of you who get queasy with the green. Joan- I am going to make that cocoa- I have all the ingredients! You're the first person I've met here to mention almond milk besides me.Allyson

"You guys who are Yankee's do not understand our culture here in the South...we like sweetened tea."
Oh, you're right, Shirley. Scarlet in Gone with the Wind comes to mind vividly, with her southern drawl, prancing around on the great front porch, with all the fine gentlemen and ladies sipping sweet southern ice tea.
How forgetful of me of this cultured taste. I picked up a pretty old (1950's) florescent-like bright green with gold edging glass ice tea pitcher with the perfect lip, which came with the tall glasses, and surprisingly fresh berry cups at an old estate sale for very little. My teens love to use it in the summer with friends, because they love ice tea, with sugar of course, and we're below the Mason Dixon line and because I think it makes them feel, well, Southern.
Thanks for reminding me of long established, lovely southern cultural habits. BTW, Magnolia Plantation, just north of Charleston, SC is a time-honored southern plantation which is perfect around azalea time.
Ah, Scarlet and Rhett....

I always drank tea but became seriously addicted during chemo when my taste was off. I simply could not tolerate anything sweet like juice or ginger ale and bottled water at that time tasted like liquid plastic. During those summer months I seriously drank lots of Honest Tea in the glass bottles with favorite flavors mint or mandarine orange or dragon (passion fruit).
I no longer drink coffee at all. For hot tea, I'm currently liking the Lipton cranberry flavor (100 mg antioxidants) and also mint. I have yet to try their lemon/gensing flavor which is 120 mg antioxidants. I think teas can be just as enjoyable as a cup of coffee and I'm always looking for another flavor to enjoy. Yes, I do feel there is a mild appetite suppression effect and am hoping with the daily walks to keep the pounds off! Joann
-
My favorite flavored green tea is from Boulder's own Celestial Seasonings--their lemon zinger green tea. I generally don't sweeten my tea, but have been known to use a little agave syrup at times--not quite as sweet as honey.
I've never noticed appetite suppression with green tea. But maybe if I THINK it will happen, it will??
I also drink a green tea by Brassica (google brassica tea--it's patented by Johns Hopkins, and loaded with the stuff that makes broccoli such a good cancer -fighter. And does NOT taste like broccoli!)--I get it a Vitamin Cottage, and it comes in a lemon flavor, that I usually add another squeeze of lemon to.
Anne
-
Anne, I use the Brassica tea too.
(My pantry is filled w/shelves of tea--bought on specials. Can you imagine?)
BTW-I've been a green tea drinker for years & years. It has many benefits but it hasnt TOUCHED my femara belly.
And speaking of tea, the news is that ORGANIC green tea has more antioxidents than the regular.
And have you all heard of Tulsi Tea?It is from India, and all the varieties are built on Indian Holy Basil(Tulsi), which, again, is supposed to be RICH in antioxidents and healing properties.
They make a green tea.
And lots of other awesome flavors.Check them out at
OrganicindiaUSA.com.

Yes, m'am....when a Southerner orders "unsweetened tea," we all know s/he is on some sort of diet!
I am astounded that some of you have nausea after drinking tea on an empty stomach! My mother and I have always had that problem and I thought it was unique to us. I can drink any herbal tea, but the caffeinated ones get me really sick to my stomach if I drink them without food.
I'm definitely gonna try Zero! Thanks, Joan!
~Marin
-
Marin, let me know how you like Zero, PLEASE! I've tried Stevia and do not like it. I really don't like Splenda either.
Tea is my beverage of choice. Of course I've been drinking black tea for years WITH sugar. It has never made me sick. However, during chemo I mostly drank ginger ale because the tea tasted yucky. But, when I was hooked up to chemo my dh would go down and get me some tea. LOL
Joann (cp418, not to be mistaken for the OTHER Joan with one "n"
), my gypsy daugher and her dh who are in Africa now really loved mint tea. I'll have to give that a try. They were here for a surprise visit and we went grocery shopping. I picked her up a couple of boxes of green tea (of her choice) and she took it back with her. She said it was VERY expensive there.
Anne, I DO NOT like the fact that the tea hasn't suppressed your appetite. Perhaps you exercise more (would have to be more than me!) and you need the extra fluid...sure not carbs if not sweetened.
I just don't know if I could ever get used to tea without sugar. I probably wouldn't enjoy it....shouldn't be so negative.
Joan, somehow it doesn't surprise me that you have stock up on GREEN tea.
Tender, thanks for reminding me about Gone With the Wind...one of my very favorite movies. Hmmm...must watch it again. I also LOVED The Color Purple....and Roots. Can you tell I'm a true Southerner. Actually, I'm from Texas. Does that still make me a southerner? Or a south-westerner? LOL We drank sweet tea there also. A few years ago when I flew there to take care of my mom I couldn't find sweet tea. Finally someone told me to go to this barbecue place (can't think of the name of it now) and they had great sweet tea.

"And speaking of tea, the news is that ORGANIC green tea has more antioxidents than the regular."
Figures, I've had both non and organic and I find the non to be tastier. I must like the taste of pesticides. My next batch I was going back to the non. I guess I won't.
-
Rosemary, you know that I don't know squat about green teas. You say the organic is less tasty. What if you made it stronger? Would that make it tastier?
Last night I had my green tea (raspberry flavor) without any sweetener. Darn, I wish I could like it. I know I'd like it sweetened. I guess I should try to acquire a taste for it. Doggone it!
Shirley
-
Shirley maybe Marin can get you some Zero.Send it to you in the mail?
Hey I can send it to you in the mail!
PM me if you want me to!No southern cowgirl should have to drink unsweetened tea! -
Shirley,
It's just a little less tasty. I got use to the sencha and it tasted just right, so I went over to organic sencha, and something is missing. I have tried different strengths... pesticides just might taste good.
Oh, I finally saw the grocer guy and asked where they get the fresh ginger, and sure enough...China. There went that idea for fresh ginger tea. I'm too far away from a trader's or whole foods.
-
Joan, you are too sweet. I can wait for my "Zero." LOL It won't be long before I'll have to make a trip to my daughter's. She asks me daily when will we be coming back. She misses her little sister who just went back to the "bush"...Africa. I just need to get up the energy to pack and play with my two very active grandchildren.
I'll get some of that stuff and if I like it then we'll go back and I'll buy more.
Rosemary, did you HAVE to tell us that fresh ginger comes from China!? Why can't we grow ginger in our own country. Geez, no wonder there are people out of jobs. Even telemarketers (or reps we talk to about our computers are whatever) are in India. And I can't understand them! Cheap labor. AARRRRGGGHHH!
Shirley
-
Shirley, I'm out of the loop.Your Africa-travelling baby was home? And now they have returned to Africa?
Ohhh you must have had such a wonderful time together, all opf you!
So now you will go visit your Charlottesvill baby, and play with your grandbabies?(And get some Zero?)Sounds a good plan, very good.I must suggest taking grandbabies to WF!I always did, when mine were small.Because Shirley, they "demo" just everything!Lovely food is always being handed out for shoppers to try.
Just the otber day a woman with kid in the cart came along and asked the produce guy about a certain apple. He whipped out a knife and cut it up for them to eat. They do his in any of the departments!(Well not meat)! In Prepared Food, though, seldom do people buy w/out sampling the dish. And this is BESIDES the various plates throughout the store, handing out bagette and tuna salad, corn chips and salsa or guac, cookies from the bakery...MMMMM!Did I say my grandkids loved it?Their favorite Granny Excursion!I used to buy a starfruit and go home and make the kids a (of course) tea party:herb tea and lots of little golden stars on a plate!
Anyway I think you will love the ZERO.It is textured much like sugar, gritty, not powdery like fake sugars.I make cocoa out of it, with bitter sugar-free cocoa, and it tastes DELICIOUS!!!
Hugs, Dear One, and thanks for not being appalled because I like Teddy.I actually dont like him that much.Just that he is the only one left, AND he is fat(such a treat in a man, especially those skinny Kennedys!)
-
"Hugs, Dear One, and thanks for not being appalled because I like Teddy.I actually dont like him that much.Just that he is the only one left, AND he is fat(such a treat in a man, especially those skinny Kennedys!)"
LOLOLOL!!!! Honey, that's what so great about freedom....we can agree to disagree. I suppose you didn't see Caroline and and "Ted's" speech about backing Obama. Teddy was very good even if I say so myself!
(Oops, this isn't the "Presidential Debate" thread).
Oh, okay. You've convinced me to take my grandbabies to WFs. Darn, that may be a mistake because I would love to just look around and having my little messes might be a bit difficult. My dd will be with me, but that doesn't matter. Sometimes they're one of those kids you hear SCREAMING in a store and want to YELL at the parent/s to TAKE THAT DAMNED KID OUTTA HERE!!! LOL And believe me, when they do that we do take them out.
I'll have to as Marin where WFs is at in the Raliegh area. I have to go there every 6 months to see my onc and once a year to the gyn.
And if I really liked it we could make a trip up there every so often (maybe).

Hey Shirley,
I found that drinking green tea with mint helps... I think it tastes better, and I can tolerate it better without sugar.
Harley
-
Harley, will have to give it a try. Do you buy it with mint flavor, or do you put the herb mint in the tea.
Shirley
-
Shirley,
I buy green tea with mint already in it. It is a Natural Tea, with no artificial flavors or colors...Harley
-
Thanks, Harley.
-
I haven't tried the green tea but I do like peppermint tea when I have a sinus infection. I even have a small coffee pot (4 cup) at the office I use to heat my water and brew my tea. Nobody uses my coffee pot but me. I will have to try the green teas mentioned to help my appetite, I have gained 15 lbs since surgery and I am not even doing chemo to blame it on.
