fear growing????

Ok most people know that the 5 yr mark is pretty important......was wondering if anyone gets more scared the farther they get away from their last chemo treatment and closer to the 5 yr NED mark???

Hi Cher,
I was diagnosed at 36 in July 2004 so I am at 3.5 years out.
The worst time for fear was probably the first year after finishing chemo. However I would say the fear has significantly reduced now that it is three years since chemo finished.
I am probably more mindful than scared now. My oncologist has told me with ER+ tumours the risk of recurrence is there for about 25 years. GREAT!! However I know the risk is much lower now than even 18 months ago.
Do you mind me asking why you ask? If you are worrying it's probably helpful to talk about it.
Take care,
Sandy

Ok I have always wondered why some peoples posts appear twice. Now I know. A little trigger happy on that submit button!

OK I will be honest....I was diagnosed at 34 yrs in 2004.......I love this site and really needed it when I was going through chemo, reconstruction etc.....I was scared.....but since returning to work and "getting some of my life back" I have a hard time coming here because it seems like the "battle" it taking down a lot of people....it terrifies me.....I would love to support people to pay back the favor and share what helped me......but I cannot as I am immobilized by fear......does anyone else just live in denial?? I admire all the ladies on here...especially those who are so gracefully "fighting the battle"....you are all very strong!

Cher you and I talked when you were first diagnosed and going through reconstruction.
For me, staying active with breast cancer boards, etc. is therapeutic for me. I know that just because I got better, the fight for others isn't over.
But I can say for me, the further I get away from that last treatment, the easier it is getting. In 6 months I will be at 4 years. It's almost hard to believe.
I love only going to see my onc twice a year. My visits are starting to feel more like catching up, then having a check up.
I do understand that coming back here can be difficult. I'm hardly ever go to the just diagnosed section, or the help me with treatment, b/c I'm so far gone from those stages of cancer, that I don't really want to think about them any more.
For me, the longer m hair gets, the further away I feel from cancer. Thats' been another helpful thing for me.
Living in denial is no way to live. You should definitely talk to someone about how you feel.
I often say that moving beyond cancer, is harder than going through active treatment. There aren't any handbooks-- although marissa weiss wrote a good book called living beyond breast cancer, and you might want to order it from amazon... she might even sell it on this site-- check the home page.
Anway, I just wanted to tell you that I'm thinking of you, and yu're not alone in your feelings.
You should stop into the chat room one of these friday nights. Thats when most of the oldies stop in to chat, and we still have a lot of laughs like the old days.
