    I have multiple areas in my breast that are being watched.  4 in my right and 2 in my left.  My breast surgeon has told me I am a canidate for bilateral mastectomy due to family history (mom, mat and pat gmas, sister all diagnosed prior to age 50).  We are BRCA neg but they think we have a genetic link.  I have an appoint on Monday to discuss my surgery.  This past week my entire right breast has itched like crazy.  It is red and ridged.  I can take a pic and send it to someone here.  I just wonder if I should call my DR NOW instead of waiting until my appointment?  No fever and no reason to think infection.

    Hi MissSherryInFl,

    I also believe there are genetic links other than the BRCA genes.  So does my onco.  You don't say how old you are, but I am now of the opinion that breasts can be more trouble than they're worth - but that is my opinion only.  More younger women are opting for bi-lateral mastectomy that is approved for sound medical reasons to help prevent breast cancer.  Reconstructions can turn out very well and if you proceed with mastectomies before having radiation, your skin and underlying muscle will have a better result than radiated skin/muscle.

    As for your ridged, itchy area, I know you're thinking IBC and that is why you posted under IBC.  Well, it could be itching for some other reason and is now ridged because you have been scratching it.  Breasts do all kinds of things like itch, feel painful, have shooting pains, etc., that are hormone related and just part of having breast tissue.  On the other hand, of course you should have the affected skin biopsied if it concerns you.  At the very least, a biopsy would give you information.  If you are feeling a lot of stress and feel you need to be seen sooner, give the surgeon's office a call, explain your condition and ask if they can fit you in sooner. The wait and worry period is a difficult one.  Good luck

    I have not scratched at all.  The itching is inside and I keep having this feeling like I did when I nursed my son 9 years ago.  I am 37.  I called my breast surgeon and am waiting to hear back to see if they want to see me.  The redness is like a sun with my nipple in the middle.  It extends more on the outer upper quadrant and under my arm.  No fever.  The are is thick feeling and the entire breast is heavy.

    I saw my breast surgeon today.  He says he is afraid it is IBC.  I go Wed for a biopsy on 2 lumps (one can be seen through my clothes) and an axilla node.  I have an appoint next week for results.  The rate of growth and addition of node involvement is what concerned him.

    Hi,

    Good for you and Im right behind ya.

    Stay on top of it. IBC is aggressive and you have to be aggressive as well.

    Sounds like your doing just that!!

    Hugs

    KIM

    Being aggressive with this disease can be a life saver! I went to 4 doctors before being diagnosed and am now NED! I finished 26 months of chemo in nov 07 and am glad to be done!

    let us know what happens...
