I've handled all my cocktails very well until I started Carboplatin/Taxatere last week. I'm so weak and tired and feel like I've been run over with a dump truck. I just wanted to know what are some side effects anyone else has had????

I too have had one tx of carboplatin / taxotere.  I've had mouth sores worse than A/C, and have started getting nosebleeds.  I had nosebleeds for almost two years on and off after my first go-round in 2005, but haven't had one since last summer.  I/ve had three or four in the past week.  I was expecting leg pain because that was a bad issue for me with taxol, but haven't really experienced it with taxotere.  Terrible metallic taste.  I remember having that, but don't remember it being so extreme.  But six days out, started feeling pretty good.  I'm glad it's every three weeks now, instead of dose dense.

    Hi BrendaF and KH125,

I had six rounds of taxotere and carboplatin. I remember the metallic taste and feeling tired. Our bodies are hit hard during treatment. Emotionally we can't help but to be drained. I know the effects of chemo therapy accumulate too. I do think this is a good cocktail to be on. I had 3 rounds of AC before I started the taxotere and carboplatin. I had more side effects with that combination and it didn't even work for me. Ugg!

I was going to mention that my oncologist had me take extra doses of magnesium during and after my treatment. She said the chemo therapy depletes your body of magnesium. She said it would help to reduce leg cramps.

My dentist had me use a toothpaste and mouth wash called Biodene. They are very gentle on delicate mouth tissue.

I did have an allergic reaction to the TC cocktail, but that happened on my first treatment. We treated it with Benedryl.

I will keep you both in my thoughts this week. Toss a blanket in the dryer and wrap up in it for a warm hug.

    Warmly,

    Sadie

I had both chemos last year but separately... Taxotere (4 DD) and Carboplatin (4).  The Taxotere was the worst...eyes, nails, yechy taste, tired, thrush, miserable.  All I can say is that it passed very quickly once I was finished with T.  Within weeks I felt pretty normal, except for the ongoing aching joints.  Carbo didn't get bad until the 3rd tx when I started experiencing nausea for a few days after the infusion.  I used the nausea meds I hadn't used with AC and T earlier in the year.  I had neulasta after 11 of the 12 separate infusions and the only time I had a problem with my WBC was the one time I didn't have the neulasta (after the 1st Carbo).

I also did Taxotere & Carboplatin, 5x (instead of 6 as intended, due to the fluid retention, see below) ... Initially, I did 6 dose dense AC, then a break for RFA (radio-frequency ablation) of my liver mets ...

The fatigue was cumulative.  I definitely needed more and more sleep.  I did not get a metallic taste in my mouth and I kept my taste-buds!   The downside being, I gained weight!

Biotene (OTC mouthwash that I found at my local grocery store and NOT my local pharmacies), was very helpful to get rid of that icky coating on my tongue.

CAUTION IF YOU FLY!!   A side effect of the taxanes is fluid retention ... It did not hit me until I flew cross country (for the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network conf held in NY in 2006).  That triggered it for me ... and the swelling got worse ... from my feet to my thighs ...  My onc gave me a prescription for lasix (a diuretic) which helped.  Since then, I wear these white othopedic stockings whenever I fly, since I don't want to go through that again!

On all of my chemo, I had to do the self injections of Neupogen.  Even with that, my wbc was on the low end of normal.  On the positive side, I never got any colds or flus ... and my DH did!

As a side note, right after I started the Taxotere & Carboplatin, every time I'd drink water, my abdomen hurt ...  I thought it was the new chemo ... Turns out it wasn't the new chemo, but a kidney stone (which my HMO didn't figue out until day 3 of a 5 day hospital stay)!   So, you never know ...

Also, I used hypothermia products (caps, booties & gloves) to save my post-AC short hair and prevent neuropothy and nail-lifting.  If you're interested, check out www.elastogel.com or pm me.  They worked for me - on all accounts!
