Beth - I tweeze and have been very good at keeping up with it since my brows have returned. I've thought about going and getting them waxed, but you've had the problem I fear - the tech waxing them too thin or into a shape I dislike. If I keep up with it, it's not much of a chore, I get em while they're young - tiny, short hairs. Also, I always perform my plucking after my shower. After the shower, the pores are open and thus the hairs come out easily and less painfully.

Tanning - oh no! Surprised My favorite taboo topic (well, one of them). I did tan for many years. BUT ONLY prior to vacation. Also, I would cover my face with a towel, but tan the rest of me. Last year, I did tan a few times, against the advice of my onc, my rads onc, my husband - I could go on. This year I am looking for a new alternative. I have noticed that by covering my face in the bed, I don't have as many lines as those who do not cover their faces. I agree, lines are not too bad, but the brown spots. oh, i'd like to avoid those.

Around here, certain salons are offering eyelash extensions - like they do for hair on your head, ya know? Runs about $100. Mine are sparse again (second time, worse on left than on rightCry) and I'd consider it, but I'm afraid any stress on the remaining lashes would make them fall right out. For people with regularly strong-rooted lashes though, it really does look beautiful. The teensy knots woven at the base just make them look thicker. It looks sort of like semi-permanent individual false eyelashes.

Beth....I started going to the tanning salon as soon as I was diagnosed because it was all I could think of to do to make myself feel attractive. And I was dedicated, getting super dark and keeping it up until this past summer, when it occurred to me that I just might live through bc and I probably should try not to get melanoma Surprised

Besides that, I got alot of sun as a kid and especially during my college years when I worked as a lifeguard. As an adult, though, I spent my time indoors in an office, a gym and a rink. I'm not an outdoors girl at all. Despite that, I've developed wrinkles and have become a Restalyne devotee. That's the easy answer!

Okay, now I will be obnoxious and tell you that, at 60, people, even doctors, tell me I look 35 or 40.  Gee, I wish they said 25!!! Wink

How have I done it?  Aside from almost NO SUN since I was a teenager, I can only attribute it to genetics.  No secrets here.

There are, though, some things that help to look younger.  Marin, you are doing so much be being a FitChick.  Maintaining a reasonable weight means so much.

I also think that skin care, including avoiding sun, is a biggie.  Of course, then you must get your Vit D elsewhere.

A current haircut is a biggie, too.  Outdated hair really can make you look old.  Also, keep your hair scrupulously clean and as shiny as you can.

Aside from your weight, I think hair is the first thing people notice.

Next, consider your wardrobe.  If your weight is good, you can wear current fashions no matter your age.  DON'T wear dowdy old stuff!  I am a big offender when working at home, but I TRY to look decent when I go out.  I'm not talking about Vogue territory here, just current even if very casual.

Maybe we can talk more about ideas for looking younger.

Also, what about the fake tanning products?  I find that they all STINK so much, they turn my stomach.  Yet, they are the only way I can have any color.

I am not sure if anyone mentioned this;  I recently bought a new mascara called LashBlast by Cover Girl.  It is in an orange tube and it is fabulous.  Really thickens and lengthens the lashes better than any other mascara I have ever bought.

Oooh, I feel bad that I said I look good. Embarassed  Thank goodness you don't know me in real life.

I just realized that there is another blusher technique that works well.  After applying my cheekstain or cream blusher where I want it, I clean the excess off my fingers and then go to work smooshing what is already on my face from side to side and up and down.  This is equivalent to smudging the eyeliner and makes everything much softer and more natural looking.

Marin - Restalyne- how does that work? It is a collagen injection? Very interesting.

Thanks for the mascara tip, Newter - always looking for a new and better product and I currently use a Cover Girl mascara.

Ok Hot Mama Tina! Don't be feeling bad. It's all good!! Although I've posted things before and reread them and thought, gosh they must think I'm an imbecile.

I feel genetics play a HUGE part in the aging process (as does chemo per my onc -boo!!!).

Yes! Dressing stylishly and wearing something that FITS makes a huge difference, no dowdy frumpo clothes. 2nd that.

RE:  fake tanners - last year I used Loreal tinted tanner, which I really liked - cannot recall the smell so it must not have been too bad (or good). The only bad thing is my hands would turn blotchy no matter how careful I was. Also, it has no parabens in it, which Marin taught me last year are bad for you, so look for a product without them.

For you Mac lovers here is the latest according to them for Spring/Summer 2008

    http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/beauty/article3127949.ece

Also, I will repeat again the best mascara I have ever found is this new Revlon 3D extreme - I don't have all my lashes back yet and this makes me look like I have on false eyelashes it makes them so long and full and it  curls too.

For those who like photofinish or other products to use under foundation for a smooth look Revlon Age Defying Instant Firming Face Primer- it is excellent.

    Hi Ladies,

I just received my ELF products and they're pretty good. Got the lip plumpers and I actually like them. They smooth out the wrinkles on my 51 year old lips. And, the $1.00 price tag is great for trying stuff out!

For eyelashes (mine are very blonde) I use the Sonia Kushak eyelash separator (available at Target). It has a metal comb and works well for separating the lashes.

Just started another skin care program for my very dry skin from www.cosmeticscop.com. Like the products very much and skin is improving only after a week. She also has product reviews on her site that are very helpful.

    Have a good day!

    ----------------

Do any of you use DHC skin care products? I get their catalog and they include samples with it. I like the samples and am thinking about using their products on a regular basis...but am wondering.

G, thanks for the reminder on that mascara, I plan on doing a bit of  shopping on Saturday and will pick some up. I have to PILE on the Cover Girl whatever I am using now. It works fine, but I have to really coat it on.

Margaret, what are ELF products? I have used lipstick by Sonia Kushak and was pleased, although my favorite lipstick is Loreal - the kind that stays on - can't think of the name. Can you tell I'm too lazy to go upstairs and look in my makeup bag for the names of this stuff?

Laura - I just received yet another DHC catalog yesterday and threw it out. The products look very interesting, but I was always afraid to try them.

emelee - thanks. Another vote for Smashbox.

It's almost time to start the self tanning routine, this time of year, when it's so gray out, I like to have a little color, but what a pain.

    Marin,

For undereye circles I use Laura Mercier Eye Basics, it is supposed to be applied under eyeshadow to make it stay put but I use it as a concealer(for undereye circles and everywhere). Very light, silky, definitely not cakey.. and max coverage.

Got all my gf's hooked on it.

    http://www.lauramercier.com/products/colour/eyes/creme_eye_colour/eye_basics/

    I use Wheat.

And as to mascara you gals have to try L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara- beats all the high priced ones !!

And for eyebrows I use Revlon Brow Fantasy(one end draws the other end has a mascara like contraption to tame the eyebrows)

This IS a fun thread !!

Ck out this site, I've been swapping with the gals there to try new stuff and not have to buy it.  lots of samples and such to swap.

I didn't realize how much stuff I had stashed away that I wasn't going to use--great for swaps.

I am 55 and have dry skin....you get the picture.  Anway, I found this stuff called velvet skin coat by DHC.  It's a base that you put on before you put your foundation or powder or whatever you wear - you can even wear it alone.  It is the softest stuff I've ever felt, hence, velvet skin coat.  Every single time I use it, I ALWAYS get compliments on how *pretty* my face looks.....always!!  Unfortunately, some of their stuff is a little pricey for me, so my girls buy it for me as gifts.  I only wear when I'm going someplace special because it comes in a very small tube.  They also have a lot of really good stuff to wash and moisturize your face with.  If you go on their website, I think it's DHC.com, they will send samples with their catalogs.  That's how I found the vevet skin coat.  I just love it.  I only wish I found it sooner.Kiss

Is that DHC Velvet the same as Smashbox PhotoFinish?  They're both primers and the PhotoFinish does feel like velvet when you put it on.

Hi Raye-ELF is for eyes, lips, face. They sell cosmetics of all sorts for $1.00 each. I like their lip plumper because it smooths out the lines on my lips and for a buck a piece, I can buy lots of them!

Trigeek-I love the Revlon brow fantasy too. I was very happy to find something that tamed the sparse brows as well as fill them in.

    Have a good one!

Abbadoodles,  I never heard of the smashbox photo finish.  How much is that?  Velvet skin coat is a primer, but a little pricey.  And I have to order it online.  I wonder if ulta carries smashbox, and if so, if they have samples.  I would like to try it.

    Thanks,

    Mary

    P.S.  I love this thread!!

I'm gonna need a separate credit card just for cosmetics! These suggestions are terrific! My vanity drawers are getting cleaned out this weekend to make room for new stuff. Yay........I'm gonna be such a babe! I'm especially enthused about the Laura Mercier concealer....those undereye circles have been getting darker by the day!

Mary, the price is about the same.  The 0.5 oz. travel size PhotoFinish is $16.00.  The DHC is 0.52 oz. for $20.00 on their website.

I just checked the ingredients and they are similar.

Am looking for a good cream eye shadow.  Any suggestions?  I'm looking at the Laura Mercier now.  Any that I can get at the dept. store make-up counters so I can really see the color?

Tina...This might not sound very attractive, but I like the Burt's Bees cream shadows. They come in several colors (I use the green and the silver-grey) and they last all day for me. Not to mention they're inexpensive!

    Hi!

Yes...DHC has the velvet skin coat...

Mary I think I'm going to try it, thanks for letting us know it really is good.

Beth I haven't sampled the body lotion yet, good to know your Mom likes the velvet lotion...

Raye - Next time you get a catalog, you may want to consider trying the samples. Don't be afraid! LOL

Emelee/Girls - If any of you are interested in trying a few of their products, you can request a catalog and ask them to include some samples.

I'm really leaning toward purchasing the Q10 4 step regimen. And sticking with one brand instead of several different ones. Lord knows...I need to seriously address this aging process! LOL I've been in denial! LOL Cry

Mary, I like your idea...I always have a hard time figuring out something to tell people when they ask "what do you want for your birthday or x-mas or...".

Are any of you concerned about Phthalates being used in skin care products? Although I read it's in just about EVERY skin care item, from body lotion to lipstick. It's thought by some to be a bc culprit. I just sent DHC an e-mail asking if this is in their products. They haven't responded yet, but I will let you know what they say.

DHC does make some pretty good stuff.  If you're gonna buy something from them, besides the velvet skin coat, you have to try the deep cleansing oil.  It's awesome.  I also use the Q10 moisturizing cream.   The best part is once you order something, they start sending their catalogs.  And there are always at least three different samples in there.

Phthalates:  Yes, they are problematic in general.  Yes, they are in LOADS of products.  In minute quantities.

However, I do know that everything adds up.  Still, I am not particularly concerned.  Why?  How about having had chemo and radiation, some really BIG TIME carcinogens???

BTW, phthalates are not only in cosmetics.  Drink milk from plastic jugs?  Phthalates there.  Have an iPod?  Phthalates.  Computer?  Frozen foods?  Phthalates are ubiquitous in our environment.

If you are still concerned about your cosmetics, almost all list ingredients somewhere on the website so you can see what's in your product before you buy it.  Even Sephora has such info listed at the bottom of the product description.  No need to buy a pig in a poke.

Marin, I will check out the Burt's eyeshadows at the local CVS.  I imagine they would have them there.  Saving money is a good thing!

L'Oreal makes a great Wrinkle Decreaser with collagen.  It makes a big difference.

Mary - Thanks...the regimen I'm thinking about is called the Q10 Essentials Set.

    Consisting of: Deep Cleansing Oil

    Facial Film Soap

Q10 Lotion (this goes on b/4 the moisturizer)

    Q10 Moisturizing Cream

The 4-item set is $85 but shipping is free.  The over-the-counter ones I currently buy are about the same total price, so I think I'm going to order it.

Tina - Thanks...you are absolutely right. The only way to be really safe is to live on a deserted island and live off the land...but then you have to worry about being eaten alive by Mosquitos, etc. LOL

    Hi Catherine!

G - I finally remembered to buy the mascara. I really like it. It's definately the best to date...thanks. And btw...if you Walgreens by you - all Revlon prods are buy any item, get any item free. So I got a free 16 hour eyeliner (will see about the 16 hour part).

velvet skin coat and the deep cleansing oil are great dhc products.

There's always a few samples inside the catalogues.

I'm going for my hot stone massage this Monday.  Has anyone ever had one?  I don't know what to expect.
