I haven't been on in a while but I think of you often. I have been very busy taking care of 3 grandkids (7,3 and 20months) and helping my son who is now a single father. I am doing great but do have some check-ups coming up. Me and 3 friends are coming to New York the end of June so if anyone knows anything special that we need to see or do, please let me know. We are going to see Wicked and the Jersey Boys on Broadway. What are some other things that I do not want to miss. We will be there for 5 days. Thanks for your help.

One of my "end of treatment celebration" events was a weekend in NYC. My friend and I spent an afternoon in Central Park and then went to a Broadway show. One thing I wouldn't have known is that there is a ticket booth in Times Square that sells tickets at a discount for shows that are not yet sold out (for that particular day). It's a great way to see some shows at a great bargain.
FYI - Everything is expensive in NYC, especially in Manhattan (e.g., a Tuna Salad sandwich set me back $12) so be prepared!
Have fun - it's a beautiful, electric and vibrant city.

I'm from Queens, there's so much stuff to do in NY. It depends on what you are into. If you go out to the island there's some great liitle towns and nice beaches, but it will be cold now. Statue of Liberty, Empire State, Bronx Zoo or Central Park Zoo. That's all tourist stuff, but still cool. If you go to eat, go to Little Italy!!!! And definilty eat some pizza, almost anywhere in NY!!! OK, I am getting hungry! Have a blast!!

Hi Teresa,
If you like seeing art we have great art museums, and some times it's fun to visit the smaller, lesser known ones. I live in Manhattan, just a few steps from the Morgan Library. Its exhibits change frequently and I don't know what will be on in June, but its permanent collection is wonderful--great drawings and a fantastic book collection. What some people don't know is that it has a number of Jane Austen's original manuscripts; one of the first bibles, lots of good stuff. A trip on the Staten Island ferry is always fun and it's free! And you can see Wall Street, Trinity Church, and if you're interested Ground Zero.
There are certainly places where you can pay $12 for a tuna sandwich but if you stay away from eating on Fifth and Madison Avenues and focus on Third Avenue or Eight/Ninth Avenues you'll be fine. Most Chinese restaurants are inexpensive, as are Indian restaurants. A favorite local restaurant, Hudson Place, on 36th & 3rd is very reasonable and the food is quite good. Send me a PM telling me where you'll be staying and I'll send you a list of reasonable restaurants in that area. And as G says there's always pizza.

anneshirly, I totally forgot about the museums! Very good point. I live out in OR now. But the Museum of Natural History is my favorite!! And you mentioned churches too, St. Patricks is nice too. Good ideas!

Don't miss a meal in Little Italy. You can't go wrong with any of the places there. It has shrunk over the years, with Chinatown expanding, but don't miss walking there either. Great Fun... Randi

If you're the adventurous type check out the off off broadway theater - you can see a great show for $15-20 but it ain't gonna be a big deal musical.
The metropolitan museum is fantastic and you can spend the whole day there (and the admission is a "suggestion" [or some such] so, if it's too much you don't HAVE TO spend the $20).
Then there's just wandering around and checking out the other pedestrians and shops.
-
If you go to the metropolitan, get the audio tour! so worth it to have great information from an art historian about the works.
-
go to Soho! The street vendors are great!
-
I second that opinion! so are all the galleries.

What an awesome place to visit. Definitely have some pizza (Ray's is good) and bagels. And definitely have a hot dog on the street. And a sandwich from a deli.
The Empire State Building is a touristy thing to do, but you can't beat the views. Worth it. I went first thing in the morning and it wasn't crowded yet.
The Statue of Liberty is okay, but since you can't climb inside it anymore (just look up from the bottom), I didn't really find it worth the long security lines and the money, but that's just me.
Central Park definitely. You could easily spend a whole day there. Great place to people watch (as is just about any location).
My sister (who lives there) and I went to a tenement museum once, which was pretty cool. They show you exactly how people used to live. Keep in mind that there is, of course, no heat or air conditioning.
Definitely pick up one of those laminated folding maps. I think that's how we found the tenement museum.
Have a great time!

I'm actually on my way there right now because my sister is bringing her almost 13 yo daughter for her I'm-a-teenager-now-NYC-trip from Oakland, CA.
You can also download an audio tour of the Metropolitan from iTunes from the Slate Magazine section.

I go up every year for a long weekend with my daughter. Last year we discovered a walking tour. It was all around Greenwich Village stopping in restaurants and bakeries getting free samples. Google NY walking tours. They also took us to where "Friends" opening scenes were shot, and a hidden farm house you can't see from street. There are other tours available, too. June would be a perfect time of year for something like this.

Ladies, Thank you so much for all the suggestions. That gives us a few more options. We are all so excited about our trip. Has anyone ever had the frozen hot chocolate? And what about Tiffanys? I have heard if you go to the 3-4 floors that there are things that even I may be able to afford. I do know that we are going to eat at Tavern on the Green too.

Teresa,
Have a wonderful trip! NYC is one of my favorite places to visit. I had been going since a young girl, but I had never gone on the ferry to see the statue of liberty or Ellis Island. Well about 4 yrs ago, I did that excursion with 2 of my daughters. Well worth the time!! I have always been fascinated with the "lady in the harbor"and I am so glad I went!
I second Little Italy!! For a great dessert..go to the "Tiffany's"of desserts...there...called Ferrara's (sp?)! I love canolli's..and they have the best.
If you enjoy knock of purses, check out China Town!
Oh and Grand Central Station...just to stand in the middle..and take it all in!!
Enjoy!!

when is the trip?

A few years ago a bunch of us went. They were unimpressed with Tavern's food and service. And we live in a small town with wallyworld being the best shopping!
I found that at Christmas, it seems that every small park has a artisian fair---amazing creations! Only saw one import tent in 4 days of shopping in them.
OH, shopping!! Filiene's Basement!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH, yeah! Great prices on good stuff. Ck out "Born to Shop, New York" by susie something or other.
Maison du Chocolate, main store Paris. Only need one peice and you're set for the day (besides it's so expensive, that's all we could do at a time! ) So worth it.

At Tiffany's the sterling jewelry and some gift items are the most affordable I found. It's several floors up, check directory. Also, if you need a restroom (sometimes not easy to find in NY) they are really nice there.
For additional shopping, try Century 21, which is downtown, across from "Ground Zero." Its about 5 floors of handbags, clothing, even housewears at off prices. In the ladies area if you are the right size they have many designer items at discounts. It is crowded, but fun.
When we were there last October we saw Molly Shannon and her family shopping in the children's department.
