Sorry, I forgot exactly what your login name is....

So, I was thinking about you a couple of weeks ago after the discussion this fall about climbing/athletes.

I was in Brazil exploring waterfalls in the interior and, of course, we go beyond the ones that have paths to get there.... It's not really technical climbing that need ropes and protection but, for me, it's pretty freaky. My husband, the climber, calls it bouldering.... Anyway, one day we went up this waterfall - it's a gradual up a curving rock face on a site called the serpent and the rocks alongside the water curve toward the water - anyway, hard to describe but not too bad going up (except for the tarantula that ran in front of me after my husband went by it!) but a little nerve-wrackiing going down with that vertiginous feeling when glancing down to see where the next foot goes!

So, we make it to the bottom and I'm psychologically exhausted (this was the third day of doing this!) and relieved and then realize that there's one more traverse to do. I could have swum through the passage but really didn't want to. So there I am with two really good hand holds except for the fact that they were pretty far apart and ok feet. I go to reach for a new foot and slip - the hands were good and held and I stayed dry but whoa - big pull on the left shoulder. I was a little afraid that all my hard work over the past year of strengthening that shoulder was gone. But it was okay by the time we made it back.

DH now says I have to go bouldering with him this spring.... I will NOT get more than a few feet above the ground! I will admit that it was very cool to do but with the end point of hanging out in some of the most beautiful spots in the world.

So, it made me wonder how you're doing and what you decided and if you're climbing, etc.

Jorf, thanks for sharing your story.  Sounds wonderful!

This weekend was hiking up a small mountain(3500ft) using crampons with some climbing/stepping over icy boulders.  The vistas were well worth it.

PS  I added a slide show for inspiration.

    Hey, Jorf,

I climb a bit. I started after my first bout with breast cancer, when I was 47. (I'm 50 now.) One of those "I always wanted to" kind of things. I started at a local gym, in a women's beginner class, to learn the basics in a controlled, nurturing environment. After that, I was hooked.

I like climbing on a rope more than bouldering. More security, for me. But the essentials are the same, just not as high up when bouldering. (But falling while bouldering can result in twisted ankles and--for me--a jammed finger that's never been the same since!) My confidence and improved footwork from climbing has really helped on some hikes we do in the Rockies, where we have to traverse or scramble over boulder fields.

I'm 3 months out of bilateral mastectomies and expanders, and I'm back full force in the climbing gym, top roping and leading. I look forward to getting back outside on real rock in the spring, but I'd also be content to be a gym rat. It's my favorite of all sports, and I'm not even the oldest woman in the gym!

I hope climbergirl will check in here. I want to hear how her climbing is going, too!
