Does anyone know if or how harmful it is to our new hair if we wash it often?  I shower every morning before work and always wash my hair.  I sometimes hear that it is healthier to wash every other day.  What do you ladies think?

Funny you should ask this. I did not wash my hair every day when it was growing back. I would just wet it down. My hair seemed to be so health before I started back wtih the blowing drying, etc..

I do now, but am considering to go back and do every other day. I hear it is healthier not to wash it every day.

Well, there is really no need to wash hair every day.  Too much washing is drying for most people.

I read a book that recommended just wetting out hair on non-shampoo days.  Alternatively, wet out then work in conditioner.  I've tried that and it really works.

Also, use one of the no-poos or low-poos.  They don't lather much but are much less drying.  Deva makes a great line, as does Aubrey Organics.

Newter, I started coloring my new hair when it was about 1" long and it stood up just fine.  It's probably 3" or so now (just eyeballing it) and looks terrific, strong and shiny.  If coloring it didn't hurt it, shampooing won't.

I washed my hair every day once it got to 1" long or so. I have an oily scalp and can't stand the feel of having "dirty hair." I don't think washing it hurts it, and I had the theory that the scalp massage helped stimulate its growth (true or not I don't know!).

If you don't need to wash it every day, then be happy for that!

    Hello Ladies

I don't think washing our hair often affects the growth. The shampoo we use can make a difference sometimes. They told me that shampoos and supplements with vitamin B and pantothenic acid helps.

    | have a different question and I would like to ask if anyone has experienced the same problem: I finished chemo 7-8 weeks ago. During treatment I lost most, but not all, of my hair in my head and other body areas. I was lucky not to loose my eyelashes. Now, the hair in my head is coming back strongly. On the contrary, the growth in my eyebrows is very slow. However, surprisingly I started loosing my eyelashes 5-6 weeks post chemo (???). I have got very few left now. Has anyone else experienced delayed loss of eyelashes ? I started using the Jan Marini Age Intervention conditioner to help the growth of my eyelashes 15 days ago. Could the loss be a side effect of this product. I find it very weird any ideas ?

Many thanks and best wishes to all of you.

daphne ......... my 'remaining' eyebrows, along with my (once lustrous) eyelashes fell out several weeks afer the final chemo ....... my thumbnails and toenails also jumped ship lol!

everything grew back, but my toenails just aren't the same ......... my eyelashes still shed at the drop of a hat and my brows are 'different' in shape, texture and growth.  this is all 1.5 years post chemo.

........... to this day my eyelashes go in 'spurts' and if i have an 'eye rubbing' day well, look out, they fall out in droves.

the hardest thing after chemo for me was the loss of eyelashes and nails while my hair was finally growing back!

Thanks everyone for responding.  I tend to have an oily scalp too and I hate the greasy feeling plus when I try to style my hair without it being completely wet, it just does not work the same.

My big concern here was if washing too much might thin it out sooner, especially being on Femara.  I guess I forgot to mention that above.   I am sure it is a crapshoot, just like a lot of BC stuff.

On another thread, Fitchik was saying that zinc in dandruff shampoo is supposed to be good for growth.

As for the eyelashes, mine have come and gone about 3 or 4 times since chemo ended Oct 06.  Luckily they did not all fall out (except when on Taxol) so I have not needed the fake eyelashes since being on chemo.  I am careful not to rub them too much and I am very gentle when taking off my mascara.

Speaking of mascara, I bought a new one that is absolutely awesome.  It is in an orange tube made by Cover Girl, called LashBlast. I highly recommend this and I am going to go post this on the make up hints thread.

Hello everyone:  Im 2 years post chemo now but sure can relate to what some of you are talking about.  I washed my hair everyday.  Gosh I even washed my scalp everyday when I was bald. Told myself I need to do something to get these hair follicles stimulated!  It didnt hurt my hair growth, but once the hair was long enough to go see my hairdressor she told me not to wash it everyday.  For the same reasons some of you mentioned.

After chemo I though I had gotten lucky with regards to the eyebrows and eyelashes.  And the same thing happened to me.  About 6 weeks after I finished chemo I lost both of them.  But I will tell you this.  My eyes lashes have come back and look better than they did before chemo.  Now they are long and Im using mascara again.

I myself found that the hair on my head grew back much slower than I thought it would.  Seemed like it took forever.  And the hair was so baby fine soft!  Now Im getting up in the morning and actually setting my hair again with hot curlers.  Im finially looking like my old self again.

Its hard, but you all with get through it and I bet you will look more beautiful.  Hope you all have a wonderful day.

I washed my hair everyday when it came back.  I also washed my head everyday when I did not have hair.

Yes, my eyelashes came out after chemo ended.  I thought I had escaped that part but I was wrong.  The good news is that they grew back very quickly-within a week or two my eyelashes looked great.  Same with the eye brows.

Carol, I noticed that too.  When the eyebrows and eyelashes came in after the first fallout, it was very quick, almost seemed like overnight they just appeared and I had some eyelashes to put mascara on.  The fastest growth for me were the eyebrows.
