What you didn't know...

Now that we know what many of us looked like before, during and after treatment from Lilia's photo thread, tell us something we never would have guessed about you...
For example, I am known around these parts as the "recycle queen" and have been known to scurry through garbage cans looking for misplaced paper, plastic and foil that should have been placed in the recycle bin by my environmentally unconscious family. I also drive an environmentally friendly vehicle (not a teeny little Prius, either, but a Ford Escape Hybrid - Vroom, vroom!)...
Your turn! -
I'm a bass player, and played at CBGB and Mudd Club in the heyday of the punk rock era...
-
Vroom, vroom here too!
I drive our race car at quarter miled ragstrips! My best time so far is 12.2 seconds - in the quarter mile with a trap speed of 120mph and boast an almost perfect reaction time to the green light!
I love to beat dudes who have inflated egos!
-
I have always dreamed of being a guitar player in a blues or southern rock band.
-
I was in People Magazine-but not for breast cancer.
-
Carol, what for? What for?
-
OMG Felicia..yours is too funny
-
Well lets see. Im an aging Hippie! Yes peace, love and all that stuff. Was at the Democratic convention in the 60's in Chicago - yes with all the riots - and voted for McGovern.

Didn't you know I am a star?
Ok, not really.
Here's what happened: Our 3rd daughter was adopted from China. One day I happened to be online and saw a little girl who looked like my daughter. I put it on the back burner since I had no way to contact her or her parents. Then about 8 months later (out of the blue) I received an email listing people who had adopted children from the same orphanage as we did. This other little girl was on the list with contact info. I sent the mom an email saying that our daughters look similar. We began trading information and found out they had a lot of physical and personality traits in common. However, her daughter is 5 years older than mine. She sent us some pics and when we opened the envelope she looked so much like my daughter that we could not tell them apart. Even my daughter thought they were pictures of her. So....we did DNA testing and discovered that they are biological sisters!!! People magazine found us and the rest is history. People did a human interest story about Chinese adoptees who have found their birth sisters. I think they put us in because the others in the article were all twins separated at birth and my daughter and her sister are so far apart in age so it gave another angle to the story. In fact, guess what issue it was printed it? The issue with Sheryl Crow on the front cover saying that she had breast cancer. Also, the issue came out the week I had my very first chemo.
So that's my 15 minutes of fame.

Wow..that's great!
-
caaclark...what a beautiful story! And how fortunate for the girls to be able to know each other.
-
I write crime novels. It's great for killing off people you didn't or don't like. I'm a much happier person as a result.
-
I taught Jazzercise for over 12 years.

LOL Anneshirley..good idea!
I remember going with my mom when she took Jazzercise!
-
I have nothing exciting to write about myself but I am VERY impressed with you, Felicia. I, too, am a Recycle Queen but you have me beat by a mile!
-
caaclark, what a touching story.
I don't mean to pry, but I was wondering, have the two girls met? Are you in contact still with the other family? -
I used to sing in coffee houses on campus and collect money in a hat (and sometimes candy bars!). This was back in the 70's.
-
i collect boyd's bears... i must have 300+... it's crazy, but they are just so darn cute

I'm the pyro in Spring, Summer and Fall. The family has a camp and I started burning the paper so we wouldnt have to lug it home to the trash. It's been fun and the kids get a kick out of it.
-
One spring/summer I worked on an all-women-build Habitat for Humanity house.
It was very empowering to see it all come together with women hands. It was great to learn about framing, wiring and using tools.
Hm...maybe I'll look into volunteering again...

Well, its my little cocker spaniel who is the star in our family. She had a spot on Good Morning America last year on winterizing your dog--she was the only model who would actually walk in boots!!
What a riot when the doorman rang the bell at 4:30 am and said "Good Morning America Limo here for Betsy!" And the "Doggie Greenroom" was a riot--truly a once in a lifetime experience for me!
Her second spot of "fame" was being in a piece in Parade Magazine.
http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2006/edition_01_29_2006/ZPets
And of course, the most wonderful thing Betsy did was find my breast cancer that did not show up on any mammos!!
-
I've winterized a house, but never a dog. I'm so happy you put boots on your dog. I always shiver when I pass dogs in very cold weather. We have cats but you can't put anything on them--good thing we don't let them out. I live in Manhattan; are you here as well? Nice to see a neighbor on the board.

W H A T ? Nothing exciting...huh? Are you forgetting about the little one?
-
Wow, Carol -- thanks for telling your story about your daughter.
So many things happening on this thread it's hard to keep up with 'em all!
So I'll just throw another one into the mix -- I was on Jeopardy! (yes, the "!" is part of the official name of the show) -- ended up in second place...
-
Hello Neighbor Anne! We are on 87th and Madison. Where are you?
As far as the boots go, its not the cold but the salt, especially in Manhattan, that burns their feet so badly.
Crime novels? I am addicted to crime novels!! Any hints on on your books?
-
I'm at 36th between Madison and Fifth, but have lots of friends up your way. I didn't know that about the salt. x
I had joined another site under my real name and when people googled me re my work they were getting discussions of my breast cancer, which didn't fit with crime and a very sexy detective, so I joined this site using the name of my favorite female protagonist, Anne Shirley--my favorite when I was young. Elizabeth Bennet is my all time favorite, so I still have a name to go. Current novel is, "The Last Enemy" set in Umbria, Italy, where we lived for some time. The next one, coming out in May is "A Deadly Paradise," also in Umbria but in Venice as well. Publisher is Soho Crime.
I enjoy your posts--lots of laughs.

"The Last Enemy
JACKET NOTES: Rita grew up in Brooklyn. . ."
Probably Bensonhurst? Italian Mama? Hubby grew up in Bensonhurst--he he--I just ordered the book and can't wait to dive into it.

Wow. What true Renaissance women we have on the boards! Punk rock band bass players, race car drivers, magazine stars, hippies, crime novel writers, Jazzercise teachers, a couple of recycle queens, coffee house singers, Boyd Bear collectors, a family camp ground pyro and the owner of a boot-wearing/cancer-finding dog! Amazing...
Btw, Brenda, I think you should take guitar lessons and fulfill that dream of playing in a blues band!
Jaybird, it's nice to meet another green person! My latest obsession is with plastic bags. I'm starting to pick them up off the STREET and bring them home to my recycling bin. Sick...
Terry, we're turning the garage into my new office/dojo. Could use another set of hands if you're available)
-
Felicia, Last night I looked for a site on Costo, a disease of inflammation of cartilege, and I actually found one. Internet is amazing. I'm sure they have a site for compulsive recyclers. I'll take a look tonight and let you know.
OneBadBoob, I'm delighted you bought the book. I haunt Amazon.com watching my sales numbers go up and down. Thank goodness I found this site, so I can haunt something else. Thanks much.

Wow you ladies are so special, the only thing I did, I was in the Daily Miner and News in 1988 for being a female firefighter. The thing I'm really into now in helping homeless women in our area and I'm a feminist, but the not the men hating kind, I have two sons. Thats all for me. But anne shirley, I hope your books get to Canada I will look for them, I'm a crime novel junkie.
