Acai Juice

Options

Okay, I'm definitely going out there on this one, but has anyone every tried Acai juice.  I have had a couple friends talk to me about it, they say its full of antioxidants, yada, yada, yada.  I thought I would take a copy of the ingredients (I'm getting a bottle tomorrow) and let the onc look at it.  I don't want to take something that might interfere with the traditional medical approach of chemo I'll be starting next week.

Thanks for any input, Carol

Hello.  I'm new to this "club" starting today. I've heard of Acai juice, and also Essiac Tea from my local health food store.  I'm sure if I took either to my doc she's just chortle and snort, but there are people who swear the stuff will make cancer go away.  If it can't hurt, why not do it?

    Calypso,

the problem is that these things sometimes DO hurt.  There are scientific studies that indicate that Essiac may support breast cancer cell growth. More study is needed, of course.

I am not trying to discourage you, I just want you to know what you are getting into.  If there is something you are thinking of taking to help fight bc, research it first.  Browse through some of the conversations on this board, especially the ones in this section, and you will see pretty quickly that some natural remedies and supplements are supported by research, some are disproven, and many are untested.  Just because something comes from a health food store does not guarantee it is healthy or safe or even what the label says it is.  When you do choose to take a supplement, be sure it is from a reputable company so that you are getting what you pay for and not running the risk of getting something else or something contaminated.

Thanks for the input, I'd have to say that I am must more prone to not experiment at this time.  I've never been one to take supplements and I don't think I'll start on something now.  Although many people have their ideas of what works, I think I'm the type to stay with the traditional medical approach.

    Dear Calypso,

My mother has been taking Essiac for 5.5 years.  It didn't stop her 2nd cancer, but the evidence on it is so overwhelming, that I would take it if I had clinical cancer.  This site tells you everything you want to know.  This company has the exclusive rights to the formula and you can view many video's on Nurse Caisse and her many tireless years helping people free of charge.  And, no....I don't sell it or any other health product.  I'm a diamontologist.

    Sincerely,

    Lisa   http://www.praxea.com/?gclid=CPvmrYrL748CFQ4lHgodgBIzFg#

A friend just gave me a bottle of acai juice.  She has had thyroid cancer twice.  I am leery about drinking it, even though I think it is just juice from several berries and maybe pomegranate.  Unfortunately the print on the bottle is SOOOO small, I can't read it!!

Isn't it oddly funny how things can be claimed to be both the "cause" or the "cure" for cancer?  Essiac Tea either cures it or causes it, radiation either cures it or causes it, estrogen either cures it or causes it, mammograms either cure it or cause it, surgery either cures it or causes it......yada yada  My frustration level is getting so damn high right now I don't know what I'll do next.  And now I have this person telling me that my "unresolved anger" caused my cancer.  *&#$@!

Someone actually just gave me a bottle of this Mona Vie juice which is supposed to be based on the Acai berry.  The juice does not tatse very good to me, but if the claims being made are to be believed, that wouldn't stop me from taking it.

One thing that bothered me as I started to read about it though is that there is no listing of how much of the proposed "super food" berry is in the juice.  If I am going to force myself to take something that tastes like that, I have to be convinced of the benefits of doing it.

I think there are other acai juices and even powders available in health stores.  As someone else already mentioned, I would look into this closely before just jumping on the bandwagon of all of these wonder food claims.  No matter what it is (herbs, supllements, juices, etc.), look carefully and make sure you are not combining items that cause harmful effects in your system.

If the claims about the antioxydant benefits of this berry are to be believed, then it certainly may be worth looking into.

    All the best,

    Mia

I saw this juice recently on Oprah's show. Here's what they had to say about it.

But studies have shown that this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world! Açaí (ah-sigh-ee) is the high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree. Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, açaí tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature's perfect energy fruit. Açaí is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Although açaí may not be available in your local supermarket, you can find it in several health food and gourmet stores (often in juice form). A new product featuring the unsweetened pulp is now also available, and I highly recommend that you choose this form of açaí.

I saw the juice at health food store and the bottle recommended drinking 1oz servings 3 times a day.  I haven't tried it yet, it suppose to be even better than blueberries for antioxidants.

Which juice did you see?  I think there are a variety of juices which claim to have Acai as an ingredient, but I have no idea which is better or more authentic?

I did try the Mona Vie juice and found it did help with joint pain.  They claim this juice has the most antioxidants but as stated it does not really say what is in it.  Also, does it contribute to estrogen production.  My friend went to a breast cancer conference at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa and they advised against it.  That was enough for me to stop.  It is also very expensive.

    Hi Golfer..and all,

Yes I have had acaii..Ive purchased it in whole food stores, in is natural state, meaning not mixed with any other fruit. It came in individual frozen packages..I mix it in a blender with yogurt strawberries and blueberries..this way it tastes delicious..but the acaii alone has a horrible flavor. I have checked around quite a bit..and Ive decided it does have some benefits for me..I do seem to have more energy when I drink it!

Personally...I wouldnt buy it already mixed with other juices..I just cant see paying the extra money for that..I would rather mix it with my organic fruits when I am ready for it.

Golfer..I didnt take it while on chemo...only just recently and I just celebrated my 5yr survivorship on Jan.31st. Best wishes to you..

I think its great to share ideas and healthy lifestyle tips..Ive learned alot from other women here on these boards..wayyyyy more than from my docs!!

    Hugs,

This is such a coincidence that I should go to this site today. This morning someone gave me all the info on the Mona Vie Juice. My tumor markers have been slowly creeping up since June, so something is brewing. I therefore, have been trying to build up my immune system and I was about to order a bottle until I read that it could increase Estrogen. Since I am already with mets and I am Er. positive, I better investigate a bit further. I have however, been taking AHCC which I have researched and it sounds like it might  help. It takes over a month to work, and I am maybe into it for 3 weeks at this point. This also is very expensive, so if anyone has heard anything about it, I would love to be informed. I also drink Noni juice, which I am also told is a good thing. I feel anything at this point that would build up my immunity has to be good. I must say that I am sleeping like a baby now. I also have a tendency toward Kidney Stones, so I am told not to go into the berries. I just figure, if I drink plenty of water it will be all right. I will keep watching for comments. You girls are the greatest. This site has been such a great up lifting experience for me. Greta

I have been an arimidex for almost 5 years.   Bone pain has been constant....some days worse than others.  Being in pain has become my new normal and I have seriously considered going off Arimidex.   Anything outside of my normal activity level generally results in increased pain.    2 weeks ago I bought some Mona Vie Active (very expensive at $40.00 per week).  I take 2 oz two times a day. My pain level has definitely decreased Laughing and for the last two days, I've felt really good and almost pain free.    Now the dilemma.......As far as bone pain and quality of life is concerned IF it continues to work, I give it an "A".    As for increased risk of breast cancer returning due to estogren levels is concerned....I'm not sure.   I can find very little information as to the true properties of this juice.Undecided
