    Hi all,

My computer died this past Sunday and needs a new hard drive installed. It was totally unexpected as there were no bad symptoms before it died. I am pretty much upset that it happend just all of sudden, obviously I don't have any backups!

Thankfully I can still check these boards and my Hotmail emails from work although there's no way that I can check emails at my regular email account. I am afraid that it will take quite a while before I can get everything sorted out without anything backed up.

So anyway, please don't think I am being ignorant just because you don't hear from me. I will get back to you all when I get everything back and running.

    Hugs,

    Fumi

Oh ugh.....what a nightmare.  I just backed up all my pictures from (4!!) years last week.

My motto if a computer dies?  Buy bigger and faster, lol.

    Take care,

    Bugs

Leapards are great, if you teach you can get a slight Apple discount which I don't think they advertise enought.

My Macbook died because I spilled a little water on the keys and wasn't quick....just froze and stared at it.

So no holiday presents for me from my family, but a new macbook with that discount per spouse.

Good luck TinTam. We're awaiting your return! Happy New Year in the interim!

I had my hard drive replaced last Fall.  It had been back to the mother ship 3 times already.  glad I bought that extended warrenty.

My "computer wizzard" son came home for thanksgiving and "updated" mine.  but he lost my Norton antivirus.

Cost me about 200 to get it all fixed and replaced.  Should have just gotten a new one.

    My daughter LOVES mac.

I have toshiba, and it's ok but without the warrenty, you pay for tech support by the minute.

    I cannot recommend Dell either.

Thank you all for the encouragement and good wishes. Sorry that I have confused you all but it's not my computer that was dead. It's the hard disk and the entire computer doesn't have to be replaced. Oh and my computer is a Dell. I do like the way they sopport customers however I can't recommend Dell either. This is the second time that the hard disk had to be replaced even though my computer is only 3 years old. Both times, there were absolutely no symptoms beforehand.

If I had to buy a brand new computer, I would definitely go with an Intel Mac. It's just that Macs are too pricey compared to PCs. And if I had to buy a new PC, then I would go with a Gateway. I owned one before and it was pretty good.

Anyhow, my computer is 80% back running. I put a new hard disk and after I formatted it and got the OS installed, I connected it to the old hard disk hoping I could get some data back. I was very fortunate that I got everything back although I still had to do all the settings from scratch.

    Hugs,

    Fumi

I do love my intel mac, but I don't cross over to the "dark" side (intel side) very often.  I am just so used to macs and I find pcs harder to use.  Yay on your computer Fumi.  The hard drive isn't such a big deal, huh?  Easy for me to say cuz I haven't got a clue!!

LOL about the "dark side" Anne! I have a friend who just got an Intel Mac and lost all of his "Classic" (Mac OS 9 and earlier) stuff! How sad...

Glad your machine is up and running again, Fumi. And when you're ready for that Mac, I have a friend who is an authorized Mac retailer who can get you a biiiiig discount...
