I had me a good bowl of hot oatmeal and hot tea for breakfast this morning. It was 11 degrees outside this morning not counting the wind chill.
I also got 100 gal of K-1 Kerosene yesterday and it was $373.52 delivered. When I moved into my house (18 yrs ago) it cost me less than $125 for the same amount of K-1. I like my monitor heater, 100 gal usually heats my small house for a full heating season.

-
That's not bad for an entire heating season. I have natural gas heat and my bill for last month was $100 plus a few....and last month was a pretty warm month for down here.
-
That is why I like my monitor, it uses a little over 100 gal a year to heat my 700 sq ft home. The oil company won't deliver less than 100 gal. One time about the end of Feb I was close to running out and only wanted 50 gal but they had to deliver 100, when the guy delivered he only had 80 on the truck. He offered to go back and get more fuel and deliver the last 20 gal but I told him I only wanted 50 to start out with. I keep the thermostat on the heater set at 74 and the living room stays that warm but the bedrooms are about 10 degrees cooler. We have our warm days and cold days/nights here in the foothills. Yesterday they got 6 inches of snow in the upper elevations of the mountains (less than 20 miles from me) and we did not get any snow.
-
I have all electric and I'm glad I don't have to deal with propane or oil prices.
This is a great thread.

Hello everyone,
Randie, I love your avatar !
We heat with gas. We keep our thermostat at 68 degrees-if we put it any higher, I'll have to go out and get a job !!!! So it stays at 68, and I wear turtlenecks & sweaters ! -
Until this winter I heated with propane w/electrick backup, but the price of propane was really high here so this year I installed a wood stove....thankfully my uncle is a logger and sold me a full truck load of wood for $400 dollars or I would be paying around $1200 this year just to keep the pipes from freezing!!!!!
Crazy world we live in!!!!

Kim...I love your shower inspired poem! When I was in college I'd write silly poems in the shower. My famous one was "Tush in the Bush". Actually it was a song and dance!
Marin..I'm supposed to be making my soup now. I am on my way to the kitchen!!!!!
Oh..Kimberly..that's okay. There are three Israeli women on the boards here. Used to be 4. Bet ya all didn't know that! I AM a world traveler since I travel to the States at least once a year..am working on twice a year this time! I'm an American Israeli.
Gas prices are higher here than in the States!! We pay about twice as much as you do..realizing that some places are cheaper in the States than others..it still averages about twice as much.
-
Thank you Barb for the compliment on the avatar. I stumbled upon it looking through a bunch of nature pictures and I fell in love with it. It's cool when it's full size, too.
-
Marin..I'm on a pea soup marathon. YIKES! I started way too late. It's 11:30 pm and I'm only half way through this! What a loooong time to cook soup!!! I didn't read all the stuff before I started. Oh well. I'm sure it will all be worth it. While the pea soup is cooking I'll be peeing I bet cuz I'm drinking wine to entertain myself!
-
Ravdeb, are you putting a little in the pot and a little in the cook?

I guess I better not complain about the cold since I am in unsunny CA right now. It's about 61 in the house (yes, we keep the heat at 62 daytime & 57 at night) and the thermometer on the patio shows about 42 plus it's raining. I love the rain tho. We are up in the Santa Cruz mtns in the redwoods and ferns. Just love sitting on my big chair in the bedroom and reading with a cup of tea. I still complain to hubby tho when we have to go to the dog park twice a day (dogs won't poop on our property ever) and the wind is blasting. You'd think I lived somewhere cold! I'm in longjohns (silk), sweats, coat, scarf, hat & mittens. I'm such a wuss!!
I agree with others. Propane cost is out of sight. We just put in forced air two years ago. So glad we did. Originally just had 1 wall heater for whole house. Our monthly propane bills were outrageous. Noticed that the year forced air was put in, propane dropped by over 50%!! Yeah. But this year our propane is over $3.00 a gallon. Oh how I wish for the days it was $1.17 a gal.
We had vegetable beef soup for New Years eve. i think it's the best soup I've ever made, and without a recipe. I'm all for putting whatever in the pot. Glad I cut the veges on the large size--the beans took forever to cook. I think I made enough to last all winter--did get carried away, and only the two of us.
But since it tastes so good, I don't mind eating it for a few days, and I don't have to cook.
So enjoying this thread.

WoW...lots been happening since my shower inspired poem yesterday morning. Just got back from the ps...got pumped up another 100cc's...can't claim prepubesence(sp) anymore for sure...I think I'm where I was in highschool...about a B cup. I have two more fill ups...we'll see where I am after the next one...and decide if I need the last one or not. The nurse thought I may need three more...but I don't think so.
Finally got my chemotini date...1/8/08 at 10:30am. I know it's a little early to be hitting it...but it's the cocktail hour somewhere in the world.
So, we've gone from New Years Eve dinner inspired gas to the price of gas and other fuels...how so like the workings of the human mind this group is...swinging from topic to topic like monkeys in a tree not caring particularly which branch we end up on as long as there is food and company.
Revdeb...Whew...glad you saved me with the admission of being a world traveler afterall. Was there a beautiful crimson sunset last night? That would have been my embarrassment from the previous day.
I love the title of your silly shower song/dance...Tush in the Bush... was it about being on a safari? :-0
Hope your pea soup was wonderful...at the rate it was cooking, it was breakfast, right?
Grace-Hey, I grew up in Aptos/Capitola until 6th grade. I went to Loma Prieta...before the earthquake caused its demise. I also worked at Kennolyn Camps when I was in college. It is so beautiful up there.
Stay warm ladies...it's cold out there...

Ohhhh I am sooooo grouchy. My mood is enough to clear a room.
Had my 2nd of 5 boosts today. Time to start the worry cycle. I have a splitting headache, should be up and making dinner or, at least, going to the gym, instead, I'm sitting here simmering.
Soup...I think I'll make a fish chowder. My mother and grandmother made the best chowders on the continent. I recall visiting my grandmother with my new husband and my Nan apologizing to him profusely for the chowder. She said it wasn't as good as usual. I can't recall what problem she thought there was with the chowder -- it was loaded with lobster and haddock. Mmmmm... yummmm. Only problem I can see right now is the recipe calls for a fair amount of butter and I'm trying to cut fat out of my diet. Maybe I'll get serious with the diet thing next week.

It was on the news that a couple in Indianapolis was arrested last night for leaving their 14 month old daughter in their car while they went grocery shopping. The car was not running, and they were on the way home from having the little girl checked out at the emergency room for a bad cold. She was asleep and they didn't want to wake her up to take her in. Another shopper notified store managers who called police.

That kind of stuff makes my blood boil....
I hate parents who are STUPID
-
Thanks Jas for soup recipe!
Sahalie..you changed your name
We did go on the jeep ride and see that house - beautiful!

The thing we have where I live is parents leaving their babies in cars in the summer. In July, August and September, the temps can reach to over a 100 degrees outside and the inside of an car without the air conditioner on is a pressure cooker. They never survive. Its horrible.
They also do this to pets. People have no common sense these days. If you wouldn't want to sit in a hot car, don't leave another living creature there either.
I'm so glad Friday is here. I don't understand how weeks with holidays always seem longer than the weeks where you work the full week. Its a conundrum.
Did anyone catch Celebrity Apprentice last night? Boy, that Omorasa is quite the b***. I think I've worked with a few of her types before. I gotta tell you, nobody is going to beat Gene Simmons. I've watched his reality show before and this guy is 'business smart.' Everything he touches turns to gold.
I think its pretty cool that all the money they make is going to charity and last night it went to a breast cancer charity. I've never watched the apprentice before. Do the regular shows (non-celebrity) donate the money to charity too?
-
We also have the parents leaving their children/animals in the cars in the summer. It is bad.
I also am glad that it is Friday. This week should have been short, work 1 day, off one day, work 3 days, but this week seems to have lasted a month.
I have not watched the Apprentice, I don't like Trump's attitude. but I don't think that the other seasons sent their money to charity.

During the summer here in NC, it gets sizzling and, just like elsewhere, idiotic people leave their children and pets in the cars with maybe an inch of window cracked. It's awful! You all remember the woman last summer who left her child in the car, parked all day outside of the school where she worked and, of course, the child perished? That was incredibly sad! Anyway, when I see pets left in cars, I ALWAYS leave a note on the car, something to the effect that people who do such a thing shouldn't have the right to own a pet.
So Ravdeb, how did the soup come out....or are you still sleeping, after having been up all night cooking it? All of this talk of soup made me crave some too, but not enough to bother making any, so last night I had NE Clam Chowder....from a can. Added the ground pepper and crusty bread. Yum.

Marin, where in NC do you live? I live just North Hickory and about 30 minutes from the ski slopes. They had 6 inches of snow in the upper elevations but we did not get any snow here.

If the couple didn't want to wake up and get their sick daughter out in the cold, one of them should've stayed in the car with her while the other ran into the store to grab needed groceries. People just don't think.
-
I totally agree about common sense.
If you want more blood boiling idiocy, visit the following website for the Stella awards, given in honor of the woman that won a huge lawsuit against McDonalds when she spilled hot coffee herself, sued and won. I heard about these on my way to work today.

Jas, today is the first time I've had a chance to tell you I made yourhash brown potato soup the other day. My sister and son helped me eat it and said it was good; my sister wanted the recipe.
Grace, you should be getting the weather we're having. Hurricane strength winds, I can deal with the rain but the wind.....
Margaret
-
Margaret-I hear you on the winds. I'm up in Lincoln, Ca just East of Sacramento...and man it was howling. Lost power for most of today.
Man...I am with you all about stupid people leaving kids and pets in cars during winter or summer months. How can anyone leave someone or a pet they claim to love in a car? If you don't want to take the kids or pets in with you, find a babysitter or leave the pet at home. I was only going to run in for a minute is never a minute!
OK, I can't deal with looking at the Donald's hair. It just pains me to see the comb over he chooses to do, which just doesn't match his expensive suites and accesories. Donald has enough money to get himself a great set of hair implants. My hubby did that and loves his new hair line. He went to Canada to get it done by Dr. Armani...now don't you think the Donald could get by saying his hair was by Armani? I watched the first two seasons and tired of the show. Giving the money to charity this season is a nice touch...BRAVO!
Made chicken and dumplings last night....yummy!!!!
Off to consider tonights dinner. TaTa for now.
Some new names on the board since yesterday...welcome all. This is a fun group.

Kimberly, one of my girlfriends inlaws live in Lincoln. My stepdaughter lives in Sacramento, I was just there last week checking out her new house. Weather was so bad today - waiting for the next storm... Work sent us home today due to a power failure and I get home and have a power failure and it was out for about 5 hours. I had Costco's chicken noodle soup tonight (if you haven't tried it, it's very good) with low fat bisquits.

Sheila...Morrisville is nestled between Cary and RTP and between Durham and Raleigh. It's a great location! We've actually had some frost last week and temps in the 20s. I here tell there were even a few flakes around the other day. Brrrrrrr! I'm so spoiled!
I think Dave looks okay, though I dont typically care for facial hair on men. But Conan....OMG! Eeeeeeeew! And forget Donald, Kimberly. He's just an old (rich) fart and looks it!
Do some women like men with beards and/or mustaches? And what about those soul patches? My ex-bf had one and it irritated me....in more ways than one!
~Marin
-
Good morning..though most of you are asleep..'specialy after all that chatting that was going on while I was sleeping!
Marin..that split pea soup is AMAZING! Well worth the effort and the wine I had to drink to entertain myself. It went over really well (though my 21 year old son said it was "interesting"). I thought it was one of the best soups I've ever made so thank you so much for the recipe. Ladies..try it!!! YUM!
I outdid myself last night as I also made a gourmet (in my eyes!) rice recipe and the trick really was the orange zest I added to it (according to the recipe which is pretty amazing as I was at the wine bottle again!). It was a brown rice and wild rice recipe with onions, brown sugar and cranberries. I'd made it before but this time I added the orange zest and it made it terrific.
In the pea soup..do not forget the dill..that's what makes that soup special..and the lemon. YUM!
I forgot to add that I think men with beards are sexy..well not all men cuz if they aren't sexy without the beards nothing will help!
-
Okay, Marin--
I'll admit my ignorance...soul patches?? Would that be the little tuft of hair right under the lower lip?
Some facial hair I like (on men...not me), some I don't. It depends on the facial features...and whether the chin is strong or weak, I think.
A good friend of mine shaved his beard a few years ago...I'd never seen him clean-shaven. It was so weird...took some getting used to.
