Hi, just wondering if anyone here had problems after a bilateral mastectomy and complete hysterectomy????

My onc suggested getting an ooph, but when I saw my gyno, she wanted to do a total hysterectomy.  I am afraid of the consequences- sexual dysfunction, bladder problems, etc.  I am getting a second opinion.  Anybody have comments?

Cinderella, I did a double mast with immediate reconstruction one year ago.  No problems.  Once the drains came out, it was all good.

Cinderella,  i had a bilat mast with immed recons a yr ago also.  Just a week and a half ago on dec 28th i had a total hyst and ooph.   Aside from the night sweats from hell,  I am doing fine.   I had my bladder tacked up in a sling (called a TOT Sling)  and have no bladder problems now.  I had my hyst and oophbecause of 2 large pelvic masses.  No ovarian cancer for sure but we are waiting for results from other tissue.   Good luck to you Mary and I hope this helps.

    Hi Ladies,

I posted my comments about my recent hyster/ooph on another board but I wanted to reiterate here because I remember being torn myself about what to do.  My Onc recommended it but I was so afraid of being miserable.  I had read a lot of scary stories about surgical meno and was afraid I'd be a monster.  I was only 37 at the time and I know it's fairly rare to do an Ooph on women under 40 because of difficult side effects.  I had my surgery in Sept so I am only 4 months out but I must say it's the best thing I ever did.  I know it will be a huge step in keeping my triple + cancer at bay and it's not nearly as horrible I thought it would be.  Of course EVERYONE is different, but so far, I just haven't found it to be that bad.  Yes, hot flashes are no fun, you don't get in the mood for "love" as often, but i am the same as I always was otherwise.

I read a LOT of miserable stories, but I felt I needed to do it no matter what to keep my cancer from recurring.  I know I'm still early out of surgery and only been on Femara for a few months, but based on MY experiences alone, I would recommend it... but it's important to remember everyone is different.

BTW, From what I can see, there is no benefit to keeping the uterus is you're having the ooph.  Most women end up getting the uterus out at a later date anyway after the ooph. I feel like that area is kind of a "package" deal.  Might as well do it all at once... big benefit... not having to worry about getting cancer there anymore. Also, see if you're eligable for Lap or DaVinci Robotic, MUCH quicker recovery.

Feel free to email me.  Good luck with your decision!
