    Hi Everyone,

I am looking to buy a new vacuum after kicking mine twice this morning.  The vacuum works decently but the attachments won't stay attached and it irritates me beyond belief every time I vacuum the hose pops out every 20 seconds and the other attachments just fall off.

Anyway, I am looking for advice on vacuums and prices.  I do like the bagless vacuum but it does not have to be bagless.  I do NOT want the expense of a Kirby.  Anything else I am open to.

    Thanks a million.

ME TOO!  mine is dying a slow death and I have no idea what to buy.  My old one is a Sears canister vac, and I liked it, but they are about 400 bucks to replace....kind of spendy.

    I would love ideas too...

I just bought a new one. My upright weighed a ton and with bilat LE I can't fool around anymore.

I bought the midrange Meile cannister vac. They are very well made and are built to last and not fall apart. The suction is incredible but what is the best part is the weight- you can pick it up with one finger pratically.

For anyone who had a bilateral or who has LE it is really a great choice.

I paid $275 for it, but I got a deal from my friend who owns an appliance store. It may run up to $300...but it is WORTH it.

They make a $900 version, but I think spending $900 on a vaccuum is nuts! Especially, when this model does the same thing.

Geez- my first post for the new year is about vacuums... that is a good thing! Better than about cancer!

    Hugs,

    Deb and G,

I have never had a canister style vacuum.  I would love info on the difference and if I should be looking at a canister, besides the LE factor.  It never even occurred to me until I saw your replies.

I loved my canister.  There is a power head thing that has a beater brush, but you can also put all the attachments on the end of the hose.  Here is alink to one kind of like it...

    http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02027514000P?vName=Appliances&cName=Vacuum+Cleaners+%26+Floor+Care&sName=Canister+Vacuums

It is noce because it is not real heavy to push back and forth....easy on my arm with LE.

I amy end up getting a new one, but since my old one is 15 years old, I'm not sure they are a good choice any more.

    I love my Dysons. I have 3 !!!

I have the one that has a big ball to manouever it around, VERY good, just about sucks the carpet from the floor.

My next biggest is a Dyson upright, still a good one after about 4 years.

The little Dyson Animal I have to do the stairs, its a bit weighty, but will reach miles.

Iwas just amazed at the dirt and grit they pull out of the carpets, much better than any other brand I have had over the years.

I keep one upstairs, one down, just can't lug them up and down anymore. DH had a fit when I bought second big one, but he was never around when I needed one shifting up or downstairs.

I bought them all from Amazon, good prices, quick delivery, buy online, never leave my chair !!

    Isabella.

I have tried my mom's dyson.  I love how it cleans the floor, but it "sucks" so hard that it seems hard to push and pull...it makes my arm tired before I am done and made my LE go nuts.  I also don't like the attachments...the suction is so hard you can't make the hose stretch out right, it keeps sucking so hard the hose gets short....

OK...that whole thing sounds vaguely dirty...I guess that is appropriate for a vacuum post   LOL

Does anyone have any experience with an Oreck? They are supposed to be nice and light.

o.k. My 2 cents, I got rid of the carpet and installed wood and tile floors.  All I have to do is a light vacuum of the area rugs so a cheap vacuum works great. I don't resent having to buy a new vacuum every five years when the cheap one dies!

Our allergies are SO much better since losing the carpet!  Of course winter is less cold in Central Texas. Cool

I would love to get rid of my carpeting too!  I really do think it is the source of alot of my sinus and allergy problems.

I've had Orecks and they are really not that great.  Good for the odd pick-up but not serious vac-ing, IMO.

I've heard lots of good things about the Dysons but my vac man sells them and advised me against them.  Says they break down easily and are expensive to fix.  Myself, I dunno.

A few years ago I bought my bro a Simplicity Freedom Ultralight F3500 upright, lightweight, the black one with the bag, and it was great so I bought myself one.  I am the vaccuum queen and have had just about everything.  Believe me, this vac tops them all for anywhere an upright can go.  Not good for under furniture, stairs, etc.  I have a Lil Sucker for that.

I just purchased the Bissell Pet hair eraser vacuum before Christmas. I paid less than $125 for the Bissell at Lowes Hardware. As you can see in my avitar I have a basset hound who sheds constantaly. My Fantom Fury died after 12 yrs of use. the Bissell is bagless and is almost self-propelled. It picks up the pet hair much better than the Fantom (but the Fantom was worn out). I also like the turbo attachment that pick up dog hair better on furniture. The only bad thing about the Bissell is the size of the collection cup, it is 1/2 the size of the fantom so I have to empty it 2 - 3 times while vacuuming my living room (because of said basset hound shedding).

One of my friends has a Dyson and loves it. She's battling liver cancer and wants her house super clean and she says the Dyson does it. They are pricey (I have no idea how much though) but FWIW I thought I'd add what she's told me.

I have always wanted to get a Dyson and actually I do need to buy a new vacuum. But Dysons are just too expensive to me (somewhere between $550 and $730) ... Or is that only in my country??? Are you able to buy them reasonably???

That's what they are here, too.

Anybody have one of those robot vacuums?

wow................I want a Dyson so bad.......but they are expensive!  My DD has one and loves it..........I've got a black lab and can not believe the hair that gets embedded in the carpet.  For whoever asked..I believe the Dyson for Animal hair is around $550 in the states.

Funny how that is to much money for a "in house" tool............but a piece of cake for "outside" tool!!!!  Gotta love DH's!   I do think it is a bit pricey too....but dang I hate dog hair with a passion.

Good luck in your search Newter!

And Deb:  Yup, picked up on your dialog!!

Bugs, my neighbor has a robot vac!

    The thing is so cool.

It scares the crap out of her cat though.

It is "docked" during the day, and then at night she activates it and it rolls around the living room and picks up everything. It is pretty amazing how it works. I don't think it is for big clean up- just tidying up though.

oooh, I love this talk of vacuums. I have a Dyson "Animal", the purple one, which I've had for about four years now. On the carpet and floors it does a wonderful job, amazing what it picks up. The only con is the attachment, hard to manuever (unless you are vacuuming the ceiling); it just doesn't reach the floor well, bends as though the attachment is going to put a hole in the hose.

I have a Meile canister also.  I bought mine over 10 years ago.  I had to replace the power head once.  I paid 750 at that time, so I don't know what they cost now.  It was worth it to me because I expect it to last just about forever.  We also replaced about 75% of our rugs with hardwood floors and I can still use the Meile on them.

I have a robot. It is cool, but I don't think it can replace a regular vac--it is rather a nice complement. It does pick up much more dirt than one would think, probably because it goes under the furniture and in all the corners and nooks. The downside is that it takes some "preparation" of the area - clearing the floor from lamp cables, venetian strings, and anything that can get caught in the brushes. And also removing as many moveable furniture (chairs etc) as posible so that it can move around easily.

But we still have and use a regular vacuum cleaner.

Tina...........Do you SERIOUSLY have a "vac man"?????? Holy crap!

A young woman in my step class is an at-home mom with 4 little boys, all under 6 years old. She told me that her husband came into the kitchen the other day and said, "Honey, do we have a vacuum?"

I have had electrolux for the past 25 years.  I even gave my old ones to my kids who are still using them, when I got new ones.

they are the only vacs I've found Worth repairing.  The service people will even pick them up at my house, and the store is 38 miles away.

Very trendy prices, but at least I don't have to buy a new one every couple of years.

Yes, Marin, and I've made him a wealthy man over the years.  The truth is, I've not found that any one vac from Electrolux to Royal to Miele to Oreck to Hoover to you name it is all it's cracked up to be.  Of course, I have had as many as three, big, constantly shedding dogs at one time, plus a cat, and a very messy husband who works outdoors all weekend or in the garage and then tracks everything all through the house.

The fact of the matter is, though, that my vac-ing days have seriously declined and I have actually found that if I let things go long enough DH pulls out the vac, himself, and goes at it.

    I have no shame.

I have a housekeeper. I don't know what kind of vaccuum she uses.

I have a vaccuum, it's a Dirt Devil and it's bagless.  When I need it (usually for a spill or cleaning the mats in the garage) it works great.

Seriously, I have travertine on the whole bottom floor and area rugs. Really makes a difference keeping it clean. Only me and my little girl go upstairs and we don't wear our shoes. Housekeeper comes ever other week.  We're clean.

My step-mom has a canister vac that is probably 30 years old. That thing will suck the dirt from carpets within a mile of where she's using it! lol It's cumbersome to drag around but it works! I think it's an Electrolux.

Does anyone still use Rainbow? I remember (back in the day) that was THE vacuum to have. I dropped a contact down the sink once and my dad's girlfriend at the time used her Rainbow to retrieve it. She turned it on and bam! That sucker appeared in the little glass bubble on top of the machine.

I really need a great vacuum too but I just can't bear to spend a ton on ...a vacuum. lol
