Facts about Estrogens

Hi Ladies,
In my continued quest for knowledge, I found this great article in LEF. I have purchased great supplements from them. They have a 10mg. melatonin available, and research has showed theraputic effects on breast cancer from 20-50mg/night. http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2004/oct2004_report_estrogen_01.htm
-
Funny how the article doesn't mention anything about the effacy of aromatase inhibitors. I would be leary of some of the information from this article, especially on using hormone replacement therapy after a diagnosis of breast cancer.
-
I bookmarked this article and I will take a look at it later. I'm not ready to start HRT but the article did bring up some good ideas. I may be grasping at straws. I would sure like to get rid of AIs.
-
As I understand, LEF is not a pharmacutical co., but does it's research on natural, or bio-identical substances. They do back up their commentary with the appropriate studies which can be referenced. Is this not the appropriate board to discuss alternative therapies? Try not to be leary, but open-minded. Research, read the studies, and use your God given intelligence to make an informed decision. Here is another great article including the studies most appropriate for this board. http://www.lef.org/protocols/abstracts/abstr-022.html

Ohhh Liz, how subtlely said.
I HAAAAATE "Life Extension Foundation"!! I cancelled my subscription, got my $ back AND gave them a large piece of my mind. They are drug-sellers!
They publish sleazy, misinforming articles and then procede to sell you appropriate drugs, right after the article.
I quit reading this article when I saw them pushing soy isoflavones for bc.Genestein? They're probably selling it too!
This is DANGEROUS!!!
It is true that Asian women raised on soy have less bc than western women raised on milk.
But THE FACT IS that for we ES+ bc women, soy is dangerous to us, if we've not been raised on it!!!
And the isoflavones(concentrated nurtition of soy)are VERY dangerous.Probably NO ONE should use them.
(And you dont have to buy bottles of the capsules.Isoflavones are added to most soy foods like TVP, all the kinds of gardenburgers, etc, etc.)
This, CONTRARY to what LEF has to say, is the word of my onc, a "Philly's Best", Johns Hopkins oncologist.
He said a LITTLE plain soy on occasion is OK, but NO isoflavones!
So this is what LEF published after I quit?I would have gone apesh!t! I still may send it to the NYTimes!
PUH-LEEEEZE,Lisametoo, these ARE NOT facts about Estrogens! They are LIES about estrogensThy are MISINFORMATION.And this should be protested and forced to be withdrawn! It is dangerous!!Truely!
If you want to learn about estrogen, ask your onc any Qs you have, read at the Breast Cancer Watch at Evidencewatch.com, read Andrew Weil, Dr Christine Northcut, any famous MD.Do NOT take your "facts" from LEF!!
Google "Estrogen in breast cancer"!
Mostly, ask your onc where to read.
NOT LEF-- they are drug-pushers and irresponsible ones at that!
And yes this is the board to discuss alternative therapies. But not "info" from people selling "therapies".
I'm not a rabid straight liner! My list of natural suppliments is very long. But I have carefully researched each one (and NOT research from the seller!)
And when it comes to estrogen and bc--do you understand that this is life or death??
Please be VERY careful of the "facts" you learn.
I KNOW how LEF are.I have rejected them!

So sorry you had a bad experience with LEF. I have spent 5.5 years and over 3000 hours researching ovarian and breast cancer causes, and cures. My beloved mother is still here 5.5 years later after a stage 3c ovarian cancer diagnosis, and a year later a stage 1 DCIS er+ pr+ diagnosis. She has strictly relied on my research and natural remedies as I have studied natural health since 1982. She has had very little conventional treatment. I have found LEF information accurate and informative as I have cross-referenced any information I thought important enought to add to her protocol. Here is more info. on isolfavones http://www.quonghop.com/products/isoflavone.htm and here is a very recent study on them http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/16/12/2579 I apologise for offending your sensibilities.

"NOT LEF-- they are drug-pushers and irresponsible ones at that!"
Unfortuntely, I have that same feeling towards Astra-Zenica and their "pushing" of Aridamax (sp?) Who paid for and manipulated the studies saying it was 17% better than tamoxifin?
Don't mind me--I am doing my final chemo January 9 and have to make a decision about what to do next re hormonal therapy, and I am confused as can be, even after reading all that has been researched and reported on this board.
I too much say I am shocked that the LEF would be promoting HRT to breast cancer survivors--
I think this is a great reminder to run everything by our medical team before jumping into something like that. . .
-
I also found LEF misleading. Bought the book at the health food store and so many articles seemed in direct opposition to the med onc's advice.
Lisa, do you have any info on the success rate of natural alternatives to AI's or Tax? I am looking for info as I have not been able to tolerate Arimidex or femera.
Stage1/Grade1/no nodes/Er+/Her-/.9mm/lupect/5 day rads/IDC

Whether or not the LEF has proof in the form of scientific studies, they DO operate in a way that I find distasteful.
In addition to being able to purchase items from them outright, they also have a pyramid type scheme going on. They have been around for quite some time and operate under several names. The own many domain names that will redirect to their site.
When I investigated the spam attacks we get here on the boards from "sophia" and "her" various other incarnations, I discovered the man behind the spam is affiliated with LEF and his spam is an effort to earn $ through click-through campaigns. That kind of thing is enough to keep me away from LEF FOREVER.
"Other" badboob, I did quite a bit of research after my dx when I was prescribed Arimidex. I agree that they spend entirely too much money on ads and freebies, but I do remember reading a number of scientific studies (don't have the links on this computer but could find them again if you would like) that did show Aromatase inhibitors to be at least as effective as Tamoxifen if not moreso. I so suspect that part of the reason is that AI's are only for post-menopausal (either natural, surgical, or chemical) women so even more estrogen is being kept from cancer cells than with Tamoxifen. Both drugs have their own very negative side effects as possibilities as well. It's a tough choice, I'm sure!
I am not opposed to supplementation/alternative therapies, but I do worry that people could end up doing more harm than good. For me, I would rely on reputable sources for information. MD Anderson has a search feature on their website that lists their opinions and cites studies when available. I believe Sloan Kettering has something similar. PubMed and the NIH websites are also helpful.
I would be VERY careful with alternatives when it comes to hormone suppression. First, there is the problem of whether or not an agent is truly effective. Then, one must be concerned with the quality and formulation of the alternative agent. Standardization of alternative treatments and supplements is a big problem. I don't like the government to have their hands in everything, but I would sure like to see something put into place that could ensure when I buy a bottle of melatonin, for instance, that it 1) CONTAINS melatonin and 2) that each tablet and batch contains the AMOUNT claimed on the label.

Thanks "Other" badboob. Confused as I am at this point, I know I would be a fool (100% ER positive) not to take either tamoxifin or Armidex.
It just seems that there is so much more history on tamoxifin, its been around so much longer, etc. And I am postmenapausal (57), but had my uterus removed 20+ years ago, so no concern about uterine problems.
And the breast surgeon and all three oncs that I went to for opinions suggested Aridimax--and they all had note pads, coffee cups, calendars, etc., in their offices from Astra-Zenica advertising Aridimax!! (and Astra-Zenica has discontinued the commercial manufacture and distribution of branded NOLVADEX® (tamoxifen citrate) Tablets in the United States as of June 2006.)
And Joel had posted a link to some audio stuff by cancer experts, and on of them said he had serious doubts if the move from Tamoxifin to Aridimax and other AI's had more to do with marking and profits than science. . .
And while I am a great believer in alternative medicine, acupuncture (saved me from neck surgery after being thrown from a horse) I don't eat anything or take any supplements without approval from the nutritionist at my onc's office.
And thanks for the reminder to all of us to be very careful with alternatives when it comes to hormone suppression! And any other supplements either.

Dear Bliz,
Your body's own natural estrogen is not your enemy. Remove as many zeno-estrogens from your environment as they compete with the estrogen receptor in a very negative way. To over-come ANY form of cancer, it takes hitting it at all directions. Genesis has used a very sensible approach. It takes a very serious commitment. If the protocol I'm using with my mother "Cures" her stage 4 ER+ and PR+ cancer, all on this board will be the first to know. I highly recommend contacting Bill Henderson at: www.beatingcancergently.com . This man is a saint. His book lead me on the path to my mother's first protocol 5.5 years ago. God Bless you all. It is so sad about the "Medical Establishment", and also the "Supplement Establishment". Each cancer diagnosis puts $1.3 million dollars in someone's pocket. No wonder there is no "Cure".

Hello Bliz,
I have been doing extensive research on lignans (found in flax seed) and here is a great article with study references at the bottom. Hope this is what you were looking for. Lisa http://www.brevail.com/Menopause_Dr_Shields.pdf

Lisa,
I am wondering, are you saying your mom had no surgery for her stage IIIc ovarian cancer diagnosis, or are you saying you feel your cited sources have greatly helped her after her staging and cancer reduction surgery, which established her at IIIc ovarian cancer?
I think it's important to clarify this, so no one thinks medical therapy alone can a) stage an ovarian cancer and b) treat one, ie, you see the cancer, and then leave it in situ and treat it medically. This could be tragic for a newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patient awaiting surgery.
I'm so thrilled for your Mom that she is doing well 5 years out from ovarian cancer, and one year out from breast cancer. I'm sure your love for her truly helps.

Dear Tender,
My mother had debulking surgery including hysterectomy and omentum removed. She had 5 of 6 scheduled rounds of chemo. I wanted her to stop at 2. Her CA 125 was 10000 pre-op, 6000 post op, and normal after round 2 of chemo. She had began on alternatives well before the chemo was started. She had no side-effects from the chemo with regards to her blood counts. After round 4 she started experiencing neuropathy in her fingers and toes. My 3 sisters and I wanted her to stop at 5 rounds. Less than one year later she was diagnosed with the stage 1 DCIS and had a lumpectomy and 3 sentinel nodes removed. The path report showed no spread. She declined any drug therapy after researched showed it did not increase survival rate. All of this was from my direction. Her life was so vibrant and full, and she continued to live it to the fullest. This past May after she noticed a lump under her arm, a biopsy showed consistent with the DCIS diagnosis. She has had a pet scan recently and it is showing multiple mets. I am desperate to find "the magic bullet". Thankyou for your concern, and as with her and all of you lovely ladies on this board I am grateful to diligently sit for hours to serve our mutual purpose. Lisa

Dear, Dear Lisa,
With all your knowledge and understanding of alternatives why are you not having your Mom do Dr. Richard Schulze's 30 Day Incurables program?? It could very well be the magic bullet you are looking for. PLEASE - check this out - do not ignore this man's wisdom, knowledge and experience in natural healing. PLEASE!!!!!
God bless,
Genesis
-
Lisa, thank you for the links and info. I will check it out and add to my growing list of questions to take to the med onc.
-
Dear Genesis,
I am checking into it, and have forwarded it to my sister in Fla. where my mom is staying right now. Thanks so much. Lisa
-
Lisa,
You're Mom has endured much in this journey, and you are a wonderful daughter, along with your sister, to sure her up and help her. I am so sorry this disease has progressed, and understand the voyage undertaken to help her.
I wish her many more years with you at her side.
Tender -
Hi Lisa,
We would love to know what you think after really checking into the program.
Our prayers continue.
