I thought I'd add that I'm making Marin's split pea soup on Thurs and bought the ingredients (hope I got them all!) today.
No resolutions here. I mean..I make resolutions every day of the year so I'm taking a break today.
-
So...this is a resolution to not make resolutions?! LOL
-
Happy New Year Ladies...and to all who enjoyed my New Years Poem....thank you so much for allowing me the forum. JapanLynn, I am honored at your nomination.
AlwaysHope-WHooHoo, lead the way, girl!!! I'm with Marin on this...being of a more mature age has its advantages...we aren't so concerned about what everyone else is thinking, keeping up with the latest fashion trends, or how awkward we may look trying something new...at least we take the risks, which many younger women don't for fear of 'looking stupid'. Go for it!!!! By the way, loved your resolves...especially the one about procrastination that you'll start tomorrow.
And that goes for you too, JapanLynn. Scuba diving is something I've thought about...knowing it would be a wonderful experience-my Dad scuba dives- but I just can't bring myself to do it. I've snorkled, but if my DH didn't have a hold of my hand I was hyperventilating...which is so crazy considering the calm, serene, gorgeous scene beneath me. OK, 3am to watch a football game? I'm not that dedicated to anything LOL.
Iodine-WOW, a flight nurse and a scuba diver. The things you learn on this site! Fascinating.
And RavDeb- a world traveler...Isreal and Egypt...and I'm with you on staying close to shore- who needs to be worried about whether or not the ones we're with will laugh at us or save us? HipHip Hooray for the Middle Child, which I proudly claim to be as I'm comfortably tucked in between my older sister of two years and my younger twin sister by 6 minutes...and don't think those 6 minutes don't count...you bet they do. ;-)
Arizona Deb-I'm 100% behind you on the whole idea that we need to just chill out as a society. We work way too hard, don't play nearly enough or spend quality time with the ones we hold dear, and don't fill ourselves up with what really matters...stuff doesn't matter. In Italy, the stores closed not only on Sunday but during the day so people could gather and eat and visit, as well as at least one mid-week day. Life is so much more laid back there.
Anyway, I was thinking about the word Media-since it is all forms of media that hounds us mercilessly about all the things we must have and really need to make us all better somehow. Let's break down the word, shall we? Me = all the corporations and businesses trying to sell us things we really don't need to live happy lives. Can't your hear them calling to you, or should I say your bank account and credit cards, pick Me pick Me. Now lets look at the second syllable- 'dia' pronounced 'dee uh', or "Duh", which should be our wake up call that all the money we spend on useless crap that will end up thrown out, lost in the closet, or relegated to the garage is not doing us any favors. I know...like who has time to think about this kind of stuff? That would be me. ;-)
If you haven't seen Affluenza, a PBS program, it will certainly provide conversation topics. I show it to my students right before the holiday season to make a point.
Alright, off I go. I have a date with my best girl friend for brunch.
Love and hugs,
Your SIS(Sister In Survival)

Loved your poem and love your outlook on life.
I also feel the need to have time for me and to do the things that I want to do....
People ask me quite frequently
why I do such thing, my anser is always ...
because I can and because I WANT to...
I'm still looking for a place to bungee jump,
as I've most of the rest, these ol' knees of mine give me fits at time but I really haven't let my health stop the things that are most important to me
like hiking with my grandson and just living life to the max,,,,
always did even before BC
Take care and enjoy your lunch

This is my all time favorite Potato Soup
6 or 7 potatoes, peeled and diced or/1pkg hashbrowns
1/2 onion, chopped
Cook in enough water just to cover until tender.
Add 8oz. cream cheese, cut into chunks.
3/4 stick butter
1 1/2 cups of milk
1 can cream of celery soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 tsp garlic salt
Salt and pepper to taste.
Heat again.
You can add bacon bits, shredded cheese or green onions to individual servings.

I made a New Years resolution last year to quit smoking like millions of other people did. I failed miserably but I tried again after one week and haven't had one since, don't crave one and did it cold turkey. I chain smoked for 32 years. It can be done. You just have to really want it.

What a great example, Annie.

DAY 1
Dear Diary
Today I started the resolution to drink more water. After 4 glasses, I feel like I could float a boat. Wondering if I should alert the coast guard for tsunami warnings.
-
Yes, Annie, good for you! I, also, quit smoking in 1987, after being very addicted since before college. Although I picked it up again for awhile after my parents died, it never appealed to me the way it had before and it negatively affected my cardio workouts, so I just quit again. I have no desire to ever smoke again, but I still love the smell and the fond memories
Is that crazy? Yes, it is.
I've decided to call my "resolutions" "aspirations" instead and have made a list and posted it on my refrigerator door. Mostly, I'm aspiring to achieve greater balance in my live and to practice mindfulness in everything I do. Also, to find a man who isn't an incredible jerk, but I think that's more of a lifetime aspiration
!
Gonna go work out and then start preparing my collards and black-eyed peas. I don't really like the black-eyed peas and, so, will just include a few (for good luck, ya know) and use mainly some spiced-up black beans, mixing them into brown rice or quinoa. Yum!
I hope that you enjoy the pea soup, RavDeb. I love thinking about how my recipe is being made all the way over in Israel!!!!! Cool.
~Marin
-
Ha! I love black eyed peas and hate collards. I'll eat the peas if you'll eat the greens.
-
Snorkeling is definintely not for me, afraid of the water. As for college football, don't watch it. I watch NFL till Nascar starts back up in February. Go Colts! And my resolution is to not let things get to me. Just say "whatever" and move on. Not that I'll be an insensitive lout, i just have to live for me for awhile.
-
Made a big batch of collards and black eyed peas, cornbread and baked a ham....
AND BOY OH BOY ARE THEY WORKING....
Will have a surprise in bed for the hubby later when he joins me,
maybe I'll pull the covers over his head (EVIL GRIN)
My college team plays on the 7th LSU vs OHIO
My pro team is San Diego and New Orleans Saints
-
My collards were soooooooooo yummy- I slow-cooked them for hours in the crock pot! Since I'm not wild about the black-eyed peas, I stirred in some really hot & spicy bbq sauce and then mixed the peas into some fluffy quinoa. Not exactly traditional Southern country fare, but absolutely delicious and I have enough for tomorrow night too....for double the luck, right?
~Marin
-
Oh no, with so much on my mind I forgot all about eating black eyed peas today and now it's too late! I never miss a year.
olo
Annie
-
Well, its back to work. Blech!
Sheri, how did your soup turn out? I ended up getting hashbrowns and making a batch myself.
I'm not sure about evilelf eating collards anymore. Way to much action going on, it sounds like it was a real wind storm at her house.
-
evilelf is truly an evil elf! ROFL!
-
My soup was great. The gravy mix I used was the wrong one, but it still was good. My kids are a bunch of losers, though. I think I ate the pot myself. I saved some for lunch today. They ate up the cheese on New Year's eve, so next time I will have that, too.
I didn't know about all the New Year's Day food until my mom called last night and said they had it at a friends house. I still think I'm having a good new year though!
Vera, what did you put in those peas?
-
Good morning ladies...it's 7:41am as I start writing...lots has been going on since I last posted.
Vera,
I haven't seen you on this thread...welcome...and thank you for your compliments regarding my poem and outlook on life. You, girl, are an amazing role model for those around you-especially your grandson, and now all of us. Bungy Jumping...AHHHHH...although I did do something that I think qualifies for bungy jumping at Six Flaggs Marine World with my dh and a student-we were helping chaparone our school band's field trip. Anyway, they fitted us with jump suits then harnessed us in tight. They lifted us up still standing, and then we were told to lean forward holding onto the bar infront of us as the platform dropped away from our feet....now we were horizontal. We were pulled back like a sling shot and then set free....may I say...OMG...scared the begeebies out of me, but after the fifth or sixth pass overhead, I opened my eyes and said, "OK, that wasn't too bad." We did a couple more passes over head and then were brought back down to Earth. Does that count? I'm hoping so 'cause I don't plan on doing that ever again...crossed that off my list. Loved your "suprise" for the hubby after New Year's supper. LOL. Who knew collard greens, black eyed peas, ham and cornbread were such a lethal combination-not being from the South, I know nothing about this phenomenon.
So, is all the heavy wind reported in the Southern states really everyone just letting it rip? HeeHeeHee
Doris-Yet another yummy sounding recipe...maybe we need to all consider a recipe book divided into Before, During, and After BC. We have tried, or will try, these and can report the positive SE's...then proceeds can go to bc.org's treatment and cure research. Just a thought...afterall, we're the ones in the trenches, so we should certainly know from first hand experience what recipe's work for us. We can have vegetarian recipes/alternatives to recipes, too (Miss Marin).
Annie-WHOOHOO, for quiting cold turkey!!!!! My father did that years and years ago when he was singing with a folk group-Saturdays Children and The Cumberland Three. His doctor told him he had only two choices- smoke or sing. That did it. He quit that day as singing was his passion. Too bad my mom never quit smoking. She smoked until she could no longer smoke. I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke...
....but Marin, I totally understand your fond memories when you smell your brand of cigarette. You aren't crazy at all. Smell is a very powerful memory trigger. And, I like the word Aspirations instead of resolutions...it sounds like a lot less work than a resolution...more spiritual and more worthy of our attention. Speaking of aspiring to meet men that aren't jerks...was your 'lovely date' with someone who may not be a jerk, or does "lovely" mean 'nice guy, just not my type'?
Dear Always Hope,
One glass, 8 oz, of water each hour-the goal-will certainly stretch your bladder to its limits...and the chance of a major flood is likely until your poor bladder adjusts itself...so stay close to WC Island-not nearly as fun or beautiful as Fantasy Island, but more functional-until the swells calm. -Your Diary
PS I hope all goes well at work today, and that you have easy access to a potty.
RavDeb-OK, I'm feeling a bit foolish, here...we must have posted at the same time...and here I come to find out you live in Isreal...and I'm praising your world travels to Isreal and Egypt...can you see the crimson of my embarrassment...it should arrive at sunset. Of course, I could still be right about you being a world traveler, couldn't I?
Juanita-Good for you! "Whatever" said within after a deep cleansing breath will do wonders for keeping you centered and focused on what really matters-YOU and taking care of yourself.
Sheri-Glad the soup turned out even though you had to make do with what you had (wrong gravy mix and no cheese). I didn't know about all these special foods for the New Years' meal either...so it looks like it's you, me, and Annie braving the new year without the benefits...if you call flatulence a benefit LOL... of black eyed peas. We normally have homemade Navy Bean soup...no flatulence required...at least I don't seem to have that issue with Navy beans.
As usual, it's been fun reading all of your posts. Take care one and all....have a great day.

I am so surprised at how many of us even know about the collards-and-peas-for-good-luck-in-the-New-Year thing! When I moved South from New York 20 years ago, I thought it sounded ridiculous! But, wanting to experience the true "flavor" of the South and finding I loved grits and boiled peanuts (not together!), I gave it a try. As I do now, loved the greens, not the peas. Being Irish and, therefore, superstitious, I had to repeat the behavior year after year. I was discussing it with my daughter the other day and pointed out that I "always have good luck in everything." She looked at me skeptically and replied...."Yeah, like getting cancer?" Oooops, maybe not everything, huh?!
Well, Kimberly, my "lovely date" was lovely for having gotten me off my butt and outta the house. The guy is nice enough and cute enough, but he's an atrocious kisser. That's my always reliable litmus test for every guy....the kissing has to be superb. Seriously, he could look way busted, but if his kisses "send me," I'm IN!!! Unfortunately, he keeps pursuing me and I finally just agreed to be "friends w/o benefits," though he's made it clear that he'll continue to try for the benefits. Next time I see him, I'm actually going to tell him about his flaw because it's my belief that it will prevent his ever finding a good woman. How is it that guys are so clueless about this very essential characteristic?
No matter, though, I'm moving on and have a date on Saturday for brunch with a guy I'm having an amazing connection with via email. I'm soooooooo hoping that we'll have in-person chemistry too! Aren't you married girls happy that you don't have to have these issues?
It's back to work for me today and I'm looking forward to my class this evening. If previous years are an indication, it'll be jam-packed with newcomers and I love that! Unfortunately, the numbers dwindle rapidly and, by mid-February, I'll be left with my core 7-8 diehard steppers. That's okay....I love them too!
I've decided to sew more this winter, maybe making a few casual dresses that I can wear opaque tights with. Just bought material for some dark green gauchos. I swear that these things are like walking around in comfy sweats, while still being completely appropriate for the office!
Anyone else here like to sew?

I'm not origially from the south, grew up in San Diego Ca but my pops moved to the Mississippi gulf coast in my teens and learned to cook the way the southerners do..
Met my hubby throught a personal ad (before computers)
Got married in a haunted Cemetery in northern Calif 10 min after the bewitching hour on Halloween...
-
I just found this thread and love it. I live in North Carolina but am originally from Ohio. We have pork chops, sourkraut and mashed potatoes for good luck on New Years day. I can't wait to try the hashbrown potato soup recipies. I usually make potato soup the old fashioned way (boiling potatoes, browning flour, the works) but this recipe sounds great and so easy for the quick cooking that I love to do.
I found my hubby in a snow storm (6 inches on the ground, more falling and temps hovering around 20 degrees) 12 yrs ago this month, we celebrated our 11th anniversary Dec 20. I was walking to the convienence store to purchase a Sunday paper and he was walking to the local Hardees to get a cup of coffee. I wish that it would snow like that again.

OK, so I got as far as the shower...and a poem formed as I gazed upon my body in the mirror, so I had to honor its existence.
1/2/08
Ode to My Body
The dictionary states
the whole
is the sum of ALL of its
p a r t s.
I do not think I should be able to argue with that,
for that is true,
isn’t it?
However,
I want to argue!
Does that hold true for humans,
more specifically
for me?
If parts are removed, then
does it follow,
I am not whole?
Others have argued
the whole
is GREATER than
the sum of its
p a r t s,
and as I look at myself…
my physical vessel…
newly battle scarred
and looking
nothing
like its former self did
just twenty-eight days ago,
I want to kiss whomever said that,
for I wholeheartedly agree.
Two…
horizontal scars
run across each mound
of discolored flesh from underarm to sternum.
Signs of previous biopsies,
and each suture still visible,
yet, not there, dissolved,
are stretched tightly over
expanders,
that have yet to reach
their potential glory,
meant to begin the reconstruction
of my formally lethal breasts.
Beneath each mound,
close to the rib cage,
and off slightly to the side,
though not exactly in the same spot,
(symmetry isn’t the goal)
lie small scars still struggling to heal,
where long tubes once
drained lymph and other fluids
needing to escape the trauma.
Just above where my right shoulder,
if moved forward
would crease,
is a thin diagonal incision,
where a port has been placed,
threaded into my blood stream,
easily felt
round and hard
just beneath the skin.
A port…
an interesting term,
for it denotes safety in a storm,
but I fear my storm has yet to begin...
its formation is lurking
in a ferocious mix of chemicals
to be fed into the mouth of this port
sending a man-made tornado into my body.
No,
my body looks
nothing
like it used to
just twenty-eight days ago,
and I rejoice in its abtract art-like visage,
and in its resilience,
for I now see
how much GREATER
I am
than the sum
of my parts.
Here's to all of you...battle scarred warrior princesses...

Marin-Good for you being willing to educate this gentleman about his being kissing-challenged. You are doing him a great favor. Kissing is a huge thing to consider when choosing the right guy. Good luck with your cyber guy. Met my hubby online, and we will have been together for nine years this Jan 16th, and married for 6 years this coming June 16th.
Vera,
I so love that you and your hubby got married in a cemetary ( I adore cemeteries... so quiet, so much history, so full of life in a different way) on Halloween in No. CA. Are you still in No. CA?
Welcome Sheila, and what a great story on how you and your hubby met.
Really, I'm going to go take my walk, do my Christmas undecorating, and finish my Thank You cards.

Kim, I loved your poem.
there is actually more to how we met, he had come to church about 4 yrs earlier after he 'found' his biological family who attended church with me and was married with a small child. He moved back to the area after a rough divorce 5 months before we met in the snowstorm and had attended church again with his biological uncle and aunt a few times, but I thought that he was too young for me and I was buzy raising my son as a single parent (he is 8 yrs younger
). He though has been good with my son and my son considers him his dad.

Where is this global warming I keep hearing about? OMG I am freezing!
-
The news here just said we are going to go down to 15 degrees tonight. We don't usually get those kinds of temps until January and February. Gonna make sure my electric blanket is working tonight for sure.
-
I wish we were supposed to be that warm, tonight we might go below zero! Brrrrrr!
-
A good way to see if scuba is for you is to take a pool class, that's where I found I was ok with it. I did an open water in the ocean at about 30 feet after that and had a ball.
as far as weight loss before taking lessions, not really necessary. In fact, could be a great incentive to keep swimming and loose some extras so you'd not have to wear so much weight to stay down.
-
Oh my gosh! Its so cold here and my heater has been running ALL night. I can just see those dollars floating out the vents each time it runs. They say oil hit $100 a barrel yesterday. That is insane. I really wish I had the money to have a wood stove installed.
-
Hope the cold lets up soon for all of you. Craziness with the oil prices, right? Here it's pretty cold--40s--and very windy and damp. It always feels colder, but glad I'm here and not there.
I'm watching the Seinfeld episode re: the Soup Nazi. Any Seinfeld fans out there?
Lynn
-
I'm not a Seinfield fan but I did watch that one episode and it was hilarious! Soup sure does sound good right now even though its 7:30 in the morning.
